Yes, Baron Soontir Fel. He's an Imperial _so capable_ that he was not only the second-best pilot in the entirety of the Empire, behind only Vader, but he _also_ produced the only being in the Galaxy that Jaina Solo would willingly bear the children of: Jagged Fel.

Exactly, he's the Wedge Antilles of the Empire (fitting, given he married Wedge's sister). This makes the Fel Dynasty the legacies of not only the Fels, but the Antilles, Solos *and* Skywalkers by Jaina being the daughter of Han and Leia. 4 families consisting of the absolute best pilots in the galaxy combined to turn the Empire into a force for good.

The Skywalker-Organa-Solo-Antilles-Fel-Hapan royal family is so absurdly amusing to map out. The somewhere in the ballpark of half the important human characters in the Expanded Universe ended up either directly hooking up with the family or a member b/c someone else in their family joined it. One of the few notable exceptions I think was the Horns, I don't recall any of Corrans kids marrying into the dynasty. Also the hereditary royal line to Corellia, Alderaan (even if only by adoption), the entire Hapes Consortium as well as the one of the most prominent noble families in Naboos electoral monarchy. Oh, yeah and the entire Empire for remainder of the EU timeline after the NJO novels. Obviously you could roll your eyes at the coincidences in the Star Wars universe, like Soontir Fel just happened to be a classmate of Han Solo and just happened to marry Wedges sister, but this is Star Wars we're talking about! The Force works in mysterious ways, it was all the will of the Force. Anyway, with all these Corellians, you really shouldn't be talking about the odds anyway, they don't want to hear em.

Yeah one thing that has always put me outside the fan base is that I never liked Baron Fel or Mara Jade. They always felt like Mary Sue characters too me--too perfect, too involved with everything. I really don't like a lot of what Disney did, but I never liked the post-Endor EU, so I wasn't really all that sad to see it go (well, at least until the sequels, now I definitely have a grass is always greener feeling).
@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX Жыл бұрын
@@QuintusAntonious I think at least to me, those two didn't bother me as much purely because Star Wars didn't make a habit of producing Mary Sues even amongst Jedi. There are a few extremely well connected and talented folks in history that go unnoticed purely because their industry is so niche. Jade and Asoka at least had a personality *beyond* being unnaturally awesome, something that Disney sadly hasn't picked up on quite so much.

Baron Fel. I know of him, but very little. What I do know is he is a Tie Intercepter pilot, which says a lot about his abilities as a pilot considering the credentials and experience needed to be one, that he is the leader of a famous Squadren of Intercepter pilots, and that he is a badass pilot with an amazing track record. So it's nice learning more about this Gigachad of Tie pilots. Thanks Eck, thanks a lot for this amazing video.

Soontir Fel is to the Galactic Empire what Wedge Antilles is to the New Republic. Both are the top ace pilots and commanders of their respective faction's greatest fighter squadrons, with Soontir commanding the three squadrons of the 181st Imperial Fighter Wing and turning them from a bottom tier washout unit into the deadliest and most elite fighters in the entire Empire and with Wedge commanding the elite Rogue Squadron and similarly building up the last chance washouts of Wraith Squadron into a highly capable commando unit that just happens to have fighters.

funny timing, I am currently rereading Visions of the Future. Fel's a pretty interesting case. Very talented pilot, but unless you actually read those comics, his skill as being one of the greatest pilots in the galaxy can only be taken seriously when you consider who it is that are collectively calling him one of the best: the old veterans of Rogue Squadron. And the true greatest pilot in the galaxy, Wedge Antilles.

I remember hearing at one point in the 90s, I think from Aaron Allston at a convention, that Fel was created because they wanted to tie in the Tie Fighter flight simulator video game stuff, but were unsure of the canonicity of the stories that accompanied those games in the players guides. Of if those characters, such as Keyan Farlander and more directly Marek Stele, were available. With videogame tie-ins, comics, novels, junior and young adult books, essential guides with new information, a couple of different magazines, RPG stuff from West End, and occasional early articles on the burgeoning internet, the Late Bantam era was a mess of chronology to keep track of. It was easier for the authors to just create a new character than try to figure out where or how Stele would fit into things. This works out better because Stele was retconned to be force sensitive.

The children of Jaina Solo and Jagged Fel held the blood of the 4 greatest piloting families in the Star Wars Universe: Solo, Skywalker, Fel and Antilles. Between those 4 families, within 2 generations, we know they produced the following aces: - Jaina Solo - Jacen Solo - I think Anakin Solo - Luke Skywalker - Soontir Fel - Jagged Fel - Wedge Antilles - Syal Antilles (the younger) And Han Solo isn't counted because he wasn't in a starfighter cockpit for any of his kills but he's easily in the same category. And Myri Antilles had the talent to be one but went into Intelligence instead so didn't get a lot of combat time from the cockpit. And Jagged had a boatload of siblings who we don't know the exploits of. In fact, pretty much the only people we know from these families who weren't highly decorated pilots were Myri, Leia, Ben Skywalker, and the elder Syal Antilles. And, of course, from the previous generation we find Anakin Skywalker but since we know nothing about the piloting prowess of the elder Solos or Fels and the only thing we know about the elder Antilles is how they died so I'm not counting that generation

Maarek Stele is another legends pilot that is cool, though less prominent in lore since he's in a game not comics etc. He's the guy you are meant to play as during the campaign of Tie Fighter, the game makes a story for a similarly talented pilot, starting off as a regular pilot, gets recruited into the secret order, and ends up being picked by Vader and then assigned to Thrawn (at Thrawn's request) to fly the very limited numbers of tie defenders against the forces of the traitor GA Zaarin. The story of Tie fighter is quite good I think. I feel like I always mention that game somehow in the comments, it just gives that empire perspective that I like but we don't see, where its not just the rebels doing everything, there are pirates, civil wars and imperial officers turning warlord.

Playing through TIE Fighter again right now, just finished the mission where you capture the TIE Defender R&D platform from Zaarin, the next mission is the one where you have to defend the ISD Adarga and then the platform from Zaarin's Assault Transports and disable his TIE Defenders. The Adarga completing the mission is one of the hardest bonus goals to complete in the game, but I think I've managed it a few times. The only one I can think of that's harder is destroying the Frigate that shows up after the primary objectives are complete in the mission where the Escort Carrier delivers TIE Advanceds to Admiral Harkov and you're flying a TIE Fighter. The only way I've ever destroyed it is to turn on the cheats.

Ironically, my favorite Soontir Fel-related moment in Legends didn't actually involve the real Soontir Fel. In one of the Rogue/Wraith Squadron books Wedge finds himself "cosplaying" an Ewok pirate TIE pilot (long story) thanks to a prank by his squad mates during a long-term operation by Wraith Squadron, and he ends up flying with what seems to be Soontir Fel (who by that point is his friend and in-law) who has apparently joined Warlord Zsinj. Wedge mournfully regrets how Fel seems to be his enemy then and has apparently lost all respect for him. Of course, it later turns out that "Soontir Fel" was a charlatan, but getting these nice character moments balanced out with funny lines and situations was one of the best things about those books.

I think that comic (or something like a snippet of it) was included with N64 Rogue Squadron. I've never read much of Star Wars comics but I do remember that scenario of an Interceptor being disabled by a Y-wing. Also, if we're talking about legendary Imperial pilots, how about a video on Maarek Stele (of the TIE fighter DOS game fame)? There were all his exploits with testing (and using in actual battle) the Legends TIE Avenger and Defender, and the Missile Boat. Not to mention becoming one of the Emperor's Hands (or Reach specifically) if you did the secret objectives in TIE Fighter. And further in Legends writing, I think he followed a similar path to Soontir after the Emperor died. In fact, iirc, I think Soontir invited him to a faction, and he readily accepted.

Seeing references to Fel and his team in Squadrons was a real treat. Put a big ole stupid smile on my face. One of the first images of the EU I saw as a kid browsing the internet was him shaking hands with Luke (image by Darren Tan at 1:47). Started me down the rabbit hole!

I have to confess - as much I love Fel and Legends - after a certain point it becomes ridculous how 'small' the universe is
