Growing up in the 80s was the greatest. I’m sure those who grew up in the 70s or the 60s could make an argument but The 80s rocked because it was that last moment in our culture before technology completely took over. It was the perfect balance of wonder and advancing technology. We were seeing new advancements in technology that were really cutting edge but we still had our imagination that wasn’t completely mobilized by gadgets. We didn’t have instant gratification. Which made us more reliant upon our wonder and our creativity. Video Games were fun, but we were more about experiencing it in real time by Playing.
What I mean is when we loved a tv show like Knight Rider, instead of playing a video game about it, we’d go out and jump on our Knight Rider Big wheel and play with our friends and make up our own play, our own episodes using our imaginations. I remember playing Duke of Hazard with my cousin Mark, and Hated it because he always got to be Bo because he had blonde hair. I had to be Luke.. We had a lot of cool companions to our favorite movies and tv shows that made them come alive and leap of the screens whereas today it seems like video games and or technology are the primary ways that we go beyond the films or tv shows.
We had comic books, paperback tie ins, toys including action figures and playsets, we even had coloring books and activity books, Bikes, T shirts, cartoons based on it, and my favorite, soundtracks. One of the best soundtracks ever for a tv show that we all loved was Miami Vice. Who didn’t cop the Crocket and TuBBs look. Here I am trying doing my best Sonny Crockett as nerd impression. Oh boy. I remember dressing up like Sonny Crockett and playing Miami Vice with my friends in the neighborhood and playing this soundtrack in my walkman.
The Miaim Vice soundtrack was a perfect TV companion. It was the perfect music meets tv extravaganza. It even had iconic musicians acting in episodes including Ted Nugent, Gene Simmons, Little Richard, Frank Zappa, Phil Collins, Miles Davis, Sheena Easton was Crockets lady for heaven sake. and of course Glenn Frey. The former eagle had two hit songs from the soundtrack which we’ll get into but let’s talk about the soundtrack album first, It hit #1 on the billboard charts, it sold over 4 million copies and was the biggest selling TV soundtrack of the 80s. Starting With the number one instrumental hit from. Jan Hammer that was part of the legendary opening of each episodes of Miami Vice. Every 80s kids got completely Pumped every time we tuned in. Am I Right?

One of the cool things about TV back then was the inability to watch it at anytime and the limited amount of shows. We all saw the same episode at the same time and it gave us a shared experience, talking about it the next day at school or around the water-cooler. Today it seems that people have much less to talk about and bond over, as everyone has their own little world to live in. I never would have thought there could be too much, but I feel like there is just too much.

As a high school student in south Florida in the eighties, it is difficult to overstate the impact of Miami Vice. A buddy of mine had a dual VHS set up and made a ton of cash selling copies of the episodes. School dances looked like we were 300 extras from a vice shoot... I got a pair Sperry loafers like Crockett wore for Christmas and was as happy as I would have been with a car or something.. It was crazy how the show influenced reality.

I remember when an episode was filmed close to where I was living in Miami at the time. It was Season 4, the episode "Love at Frist Sight" starring Iman. 78th Ave and SW 127th St (it is mentioned in the episode too, so not like I am spilling any secrets here). I rode my bike down there... about 4 blocks from my home!! I didn't get to meet Don Johnson, but I did meet Phillip Michael Thomas... he signed autographs for me and my friends. It was SO cool having my favorite show being filmed in my neighborhood! I live in Colorado now, but the memories of my childhood, growing up in Miami in the 80s will always stay with me. 💖

Saxophone most definitely adds to a song. Dave Clark recognized that and incorporated Denis Peyton in his group DC5(1960s). One would really have to say the prevalence of Sax in music started in the later 1970’s. Look at Year of the Cat by Al Stewart(‘76), a long sax solo in that song and let’s not forget about Alto Reed of Bob Segers Silver Bullet Band. The Sax started to become very predominant in the mid 1970’s. Saxophone definitely isn’t a bad thing in a contemporary rock song, it’s an investment in creating a certain mood in the music. I wish music was more like the 70s and 80’s. Everything now is so over produced and there doesn’t seem to be any depth to the sound. Sadly everything now days is so compressed and flattened out with auto tune that the music lacks character.

You hit exactly what I was thinking for what made the '80s such a great time to grow up. The technology was mind-blowing and fascinating, but it left room for our imaginations. Also everything looked real. We really believed the DeLorean could fly and take us through time. The et, or even alf, could pay us a visit. That we could drive around in a talking car like KITT. Even sports were more fun to watch in the '80s. All that, and we had the best toys of all time also. It truly was a great time to be a kid.

Great memories! I grew up in the 60s & 70’s and while there was an awesome abundance of great trend setting music, I did love the 80’s music the best. It seemed like the charts changed weekly with new songs, CDs gave us a more durable format of music. Yeah, the 80’s definitely! Big hair on the ladies, the dresses, nightclubs, and the decadence were a sight. And Miami Vice, my wife recorded it for me every Friday night while I was working. She’d have dinner ready 9-11pm(depending on my shift) then with her by my side, we’d watch MV on the 19” color tv while we ate….absolutely priceless!

Man, thanks for posting this video! I graduated in 1985 and I must've worn out at least two or three cassettes in my '82 Supra's stereo playing these tunes. Also, my Dad was a police officer at that time and we'd watch Miami Vice every Friday night together. Although we really were very different from each other and didn't really click much then, we did find common ground bonding over Miami Vice. Years later, when we were much closer, we'd laugh when warmly reminiscing over those days. My Dad passed a few years ago, but this music, when it comes on the radio, instantly shoots me back through time to those days in the Eighties and to high school, my friends, my youth, to driving late at night with the windows down watching the city lights streak away over my car's hood and, mostly to my Dad . Crockett was cool, but my Dad was amazing. I miss him terribly, but the memories will never fade. Thanks for posting this, brother......

The irony is, we grew up to build the platforms for the instant gratification technology that we have today. I agree though, half the fun was in the waiting. Even just hoping that the video store would have the new movie you wanted. Waiting until midnight for the music store to open back up for a big new release. Miss those days.

Techie' Moment here: In the 1984 TV season I can't express enough how much that theme song blew-up (as you'd say now) in large part because the FCC had just authorized stereo broadcasting for TV. NBC being part of RCA did a big tie-in of the new shows with stereo soundtracks including the music performances on Johnny Carson. SAP was also authorized at that time, so for example when the Pope came to the LA Colosseum they ran English on main and Spanish simulcast on the SAP. So suddenly there was a reason to connect your television's audio output to the stereo system, and if you had one of the VERY expensive BetaHiFi VCR (VHS HiFI wouldn't come out for another year or so) you had a rockin' AV experience. I had just graduated college as an engineer, so getting a high end setup at home soon became a top priority.

I was already a Jan Hammer fan from his work with legendary guitarists Jeff Beck and Al DiMeola (listen to the song ‘Sequencer’ from the 1983 album Scenario to see how the Vice theme was developed!), and was a freshman in college when Miami Vice arrived and took off quickly! It was the perfect show for the time - so many cool guests through the years. Loads of other shows tried to tie in music - we’ve been watching a bit of ‘Charmed’ and they used lots of guest musicians in the P3 club (had Cranberries on last episode we watch). Great memories!

My Miami Vice story. You can thank me for the existence of Miami Vice...well just a tiny, tiny bit. I attended the Preview House in Hollywood a few times as part of test audiences for pilots and commercials, mostly as something very different to do on a date. One visit, which can’t be topped, you guessed it, we saw the pilot for Miami Vice. We all, and by all I mean the entire audience, loved it. How could anyone not? At some point, I heard it had gotten the highest rating anything had ever gotten there. They had you control a dial and continually change it from 0-10 as you watched. It was near 10 my whole time previewing, except for when Crockett’s pet alligator was on screen. To me, it was farcical to have a full grown alligator in such a tight space as a boat and I gave it a zero whenever it was on screen. Another day, at Sunday brunch at El Torito in Pasadena, after Miami Vice had made it big, my date and I were ushered into an all but empty dining room and seated in the booth adjacent to Philip Michael Thomas and his date. We left them alone to eat in peace.

I would put it up to the speakers of the tv in the living room and record the theme songs. And if you missed it? You had to wait until next week to catch it again. Some of the best tv theme songs! Growing Pains, The Greatest American Hero, Family Ties, The Facts of Life!, Diff’rent Strokes, Whos the Boss?, Cheers The Dukes of Hazzard, Bosom Buddies!! Oh my gosh! Oh and probably one of my favorite instrumental (besides the mentioned Miami Vice theme!) The Hill Street Blues theme!! What a great song!! Music has changed, times have changed. I got "Miami Vice" on Blu-Ray last year and only watch an episode on Friday nights, just like when it would air. Such a fun look at that time, especially the first couple of seasons. "I Want to Know What Love Is" was used in a very memorable scene. I can't really get into the comparisons of different childhoods because I really have no idea what kids are doing now. You are absolutely right! The Miami Vice soundtrack was/is the best I've ever heard and G.F.'s music, as most of the music used, was a perfect match to Michael Mann's visuals. Before "Silence of the Lambs", Mann made a movie called "Manhunter" which was like watching Hanabel Lecter on Miami Vice. It was another great marriage of music and images. A great movie! You'll never hear Iron Butterfly's In-a-gadda-da-vida the same way again.

Miami Vice was a music-powered cultural phenomenon. It changed the face of popular entertainment, and how pop cultures could mix. The never ending stream of celebrity guest stars from both the film AND music industries was impressive enough, but even different musical genres got into the act, with pop, hard rock, rap, and even country music legends like Willie Nelson popping up. The show was a springboard for lesser-known celebs, and a "must-do" for more established ones who needed to keep up their cool image. It was the right idea, by the right producer, at the right time. And it will... sadly... never happen again. And yeah... I wish I could go back to the 80's too.

Excellent as always. I had to pull out the tape to remember the names of the songs on the Miami Vice soundtrack I want to refer to here. The last two "Chase" and "Evan" by Jan Hammer were very eye-opening for me because while I loved the rock, those songs made me think. And ultimately it introduced me into what was called "new age" music. Now, I think those musicians prefer ambient music, but anyhow, the powerful instrumental music was a new avenue for me. Over time, I ended up learning about Michael Hedges and all kinds of other great musicians that aren't mainstream, but produced beautiful music. Still, I'm so happy that I was an 80s kid (born in 1973). It was a magical time.

Only thing I really appreciate today over the 70s or 80s is the wealth of information you have at your fingertips. Back then you really only had the library or school and if you were lucky a set of encyclopedias at home. We were poor, it took us over a year to be able to afford a set of encyclopedias, so we could only get one book(letter) at a time, every time we got a new letter I read it cover to cover.

There was still some class still left in the 80's. That all got lost along the way, has never been the same since. The 80's were the last great decade/ era that possibilities seemed great and limitless. I remember the fallacy that "there were great things to come" at that time. What a let down, the greatness the future was to have, was just not to be. We were at the top of the mountain then, reached the apex, everyone was living the moment, riding the wave....and thankfully were oblivious to what the future really held. Yes, there have been some great advancements now, however, a lot has been lost along the way. I am very fortunate to have lived through that era, and it is a place and time that will never be recaptured, unfortunately. We had the best, and it made me the better for it. Good day.
