I just realized this might be why it feels so wrong when I try to sleep without hugging something.

Me, too! I slept the best when I had 3 cats. One would crawl into the covers with me and then purr after I hugged her like a teddy bear. Her sister would rouse me in the morning if I stayed in bed longer than usual. The Siamese (my “baby”) would wait until I was up to beg for attention (b/c her sleeping on my neck - as a kitten - had not produced the results either of us wanted). So, I was always giving and receiving attention, and - now that I think of it - physical pressure and feedback. Martial arts, meditation and energy awareness training - plus swimming and weight lifting/spinning/biking - all helped to regulate my stress, anger & fruition in grad school. However, I recall feeling tired all the time. I slept in my friend’s car every time we went on a road trip. Now that I’m 20 years older, bored and no longer exercising like I did - and have no cats or regular social interactions like I did in the dojo and school - it’s no wonder I feel lonely, sad and out of shape.

One of my pups sleeps on his cushion by my head, and the other tends to crawl up in my arms like a teddy bear-all while my feet or hand are touching my husband. I’m a veteran, and I often have nightmares. One of my pups always wake me up.

I have a slightly different version of trex arms I call bat wings, I cross them at the halfway point of my forearm in a way that reminds me of a bat. Also def recommend doing that with a blanket end in each hand, it’s super comforting and just the right level of feeling wrapped in the blanket without being too snug or too loose around the shoulders

Ofc we sleep in the same bed more often than not but I think it's better the way we have it. I've also heard it's actually better for people in relationships to sleep separately to give each other time away. :)

anyone who tells you that's bad for marriage either has never been married or has a shitty marriage lol my conservative 80 year old grandparents with 'traditional' marriage/family values sleep in seperate beds because one snores and the other can't sleep at night because of terrible leg pains and often needs to get up in the middle of the night multiple times because of it so sleeping together is a nightmare and they've been sleeping seperately for 20+ years and have been married for over 50 lol

Okay. This hit home. So you're telling me, that my want/need to sleep with a fat, round cat plush in my arms nestled close into my chest and getting a great deal of comfort and soothing, soaking up the sensation and pressure is in fact. Not Neurotypical. I've always been like this, and I never thought much of it, except for recognizing that I sleep poorly or not at all if I have to go without a decent heavy blanket or my plush (or both). And I've heard how others dont use blankets at all, no need for medicine, no plush to hug.. and it just blows my mind! I really needed to see this.. thank you. I'm learning more and more that I am different from others, but its not upsetting. I'm just glad to be comfortable in my own body. (:

I also had ulcerative colitis, endometriosis, adenomyosis, joint pain, spacicity, and fatigue. So I was told it was one of the previous ailments that caused my confusion and clumsiness. i think there is also a factor of many neurodivergents being hypermobile, which makes it difficult to find a sleeping position that isn't hurting. Having plushies or pillows to prop body parts against and on helps when during sleep we are getting "too loose" so end up hurting ourselves. weighted blanket sensation can also help with not feeling pain as much and not moving around so much.

Both my mom and I sleep with our wrists bent under our chins. I also sleep with a throw blanket that I've had since I was a kid because hugging it is extremely comforting. I'm slowly realizing my mom and I could, at the very least, have ADD or ADHD or possibly even autism. It's something that runs in families and I know for sure that my other immediate family members also have similar behaviors to us and we're all dyslexic. Since I'm a woman I know my neuro divergence typically goes unnoticed and I could have gone undiagnosed. My mom wasn't diagnosed with dyslexia until long after her younger brother was diagnosed with it. It makes me wonder what else people might have missed when it comes to us simply because we aren't male

Over forty years on this planet, and a lot of self reflection to understand the signals my body sends me (or doesn’t send when it should), and a freaking short form video tells me I’m probably neurospicy. Honestly, though, I shouldn’t surprised.

The self soothing is off the charts over here! Two body pillows, two plushes, and a weighted blanket before I can call it a night.

I have a faux fur blanket that is relatively weighted, a blanket I cuddle, a pillow I cuddle, my dog, and a few stuffies. I cannot sleep normally. Sometimes I sleep in my jackets too. I just need to weight to sleep.

I always sleep with my wrists in that position, they have been hurting for years, I was not even aware that I have been doing that until now... I still dont know if I have ADD, but realizing this made me cry...

I got a plushie that’s just the right width and it has relieved my wrist pain from T-Rex arms! It was such a huge help. I don’t wake up with wrist or elbow pain anymore because my arms can lay at a more natural angle I highly recommend.

I have great balance and control over my body and feel sensations deeply. I still do all that when i sleep though and need a weighted blanket.

Thank you 😭 I have ASD, and I couldn't understand why I feel like I'm floating/falling, completely ungrounded when I try to sleep EXCEPT when I'm pregnant and I have a big belly that I can snuggle, or I've stuffed the bed full of pillows.

I have adhd and personally have the issue that if my breath hits a part of my body (typically my arm or face) it’s really hard for me to fall asleep

I never realised this was a neurodivergent thing but it actually makes the fact that I CANNOT sleep comfortably unless I have a boomerang shaped pillow make SO much sense wow

I wonder if this is why I'm hypermobile in certain areas. My wrists stay like that with no issue. I can also ball up completely on one couch cushion with comfort and ease. People look at me weird when I do things like this and I just laugh and say "I'm compactable"
