As a DIYer I did a basement refinish a couple of decades ago. Given the high altitude, semiarid climate, and the fact I DIDN'T THIN THE MUD (used the green label) my tape would sometimes not stick. The super dry paper sucked the moisture out of the surface of the mud before I got it embedded. Not knowing any better my solution was to lightly spritz the tape with water (not soak it). Seemed to work fine. This summer I'll be doing a lot more taping. Now, thanks to you, I WILL BE THINNING MY MUD WITH WATER and leaving the tape dry.

Thanks Doug. I have an idea for a Collab video we could do either as a live stream, or an assembled video we shoot separately. We could discuss the merits of mesh tape since so many drywaller‘s still think it’s a lousy product. You’ve had a lot of experience with it and as a very successful contractor that might help some people realize it’s more about the technique and materials. And I know you’re often really busy so no rush at all. I’ve got plenty more video ideas to put out

Is the contest over? I didn't see a link or a code word. I'm glad you came to this conclusion. I was not looking forward to strapping a five gallon bucket of water to my Bazooka. Hahaha...yeah right!! 27 years and I have never seen anyone wet their tape. I love how thorough you are in your teaching though. Put these silly things to rest so people can get to learning the right way. Right on! I would love to see your take on the Wagner Spraytech electric texture sprayer. We have to do some repairs sometimes where pulling out all your gear to texture is more of a pain than it is worth. This tool seems like a good answer to that problem, but I'm still hesitant to spend the money and get disappointed. Just wondering if you have ever tried it or seen it used.

The below brick website indicates that water only has that effect if the material is saturated. www.claybrick.org/should-you-wet-clay-bricks-using-them Spraying a wall may clear dirt and loose debris so I wouldn't think there is any harm as long as the mortar isn't being slapped on too soon after.

@ThatKiltedGuyDIY

My test showed it stuck slightly less than the standard method of not wetting it. Do it if you want, but you're not gaining anything vs doing it the usual way. If you feel it is, you likely have tried using too thick of a mud when taping. We thin it way down and it wipes fine, and sticks like mad, so no wet tape needed.

Personally I think it comes out better if it's slightly wet. A quick dip in a bucket and never have a bubble. In my opinion it depends on how wet the mud is and what mud you're using, green , blue or fast. His mud is super watery already so wetting the paper wouldn't be a good idea if it's that sloppy wet. If it's not that wet then the tape can suck up the water and create bubbles. I also think that putting too much water into it can make it weak . I can see why production people don't wet the mud since it's an extra step. They just use super wet mud. And that can come loose on the edges as well.
