Ottoman Jewish Quarter - Hungary Budapest 🇭🇺
Today we are in a Jewish Quarter in Budapest, Hungary. Fehim accompanies me today. I met Fehim at the hostel. He is a Giresun native studying in France. We start the day with Fehim at a Jewish restaurant. I ordered shakshuka. It's an Israeli breakfast.
So why are we here? In fact, we can say that everything is the effect of the religious wars that broke out in Europe between the 15th and 17th centuries in Spain. Queen Isabella I of Castile and Leon and King of Aragon II. All Jews were expelled from Spain, along with the document signed by Ferdinand on March 31, 1492, in the Alhambra Palace, expressing the decision to expel the Jews living in Spain, together with its justifications. The name of this decree is the Alhambra Decree.
The Sultan of the period, Beyazid II, opened the doors of the Ottoman Empire to all Jewish families expelled from Spain. Actually, Hungary was Ottoman lands at that time. Most of the expelled Jews settled in Hungary, then in Istanbul, Thessaloniki and Izmir.
I wanted to leave the restaurant and show you the biggest Synagogue in Europe. But because it is very busy. We skip there and wander around the Grand Budapest Market.
