Love the video! I've been flying IFR consistently since getting the rating (with your help nailing the ground school portion btw) and find the CRAFT scratchpad to be kinda fun, actually. The first few times were the hardest, but consistent practice and having plates/charts at hand make it easier. IRL, controllers rarely give you something you wouldn't expect, so a little knowledge of the airspace and local procs is always helpful when you have all the time in the world on the ground before hopping in the plane. Also, I followed along with Baron Pilot and Steveo on their vids quite a bit during training as they almost exclusively fly IFR and get clearances at the start of their videos.

Thanks for the new IFR vid. Working on that right now. I find the CRAFT on the ground to be ok.... I struggle with the approach clearance when there is a lot going on flying the plane.

It seems overwhelming, just remember PHAC, but you only need to read back HAC. You have a general idea of heading, you need altitude, and you'll get the clearance of the approach you should be expecting. Just don't forget "delay vectors" if needed 😅

I’m always looking for a good clearance delivery freq to listen in on to practice that doesn’t have a lot of PDC. I’ll try Centennial. Other recommendations are welcome!

I’ve tried a lot of Class Ds. KLOU has a good one if you catch it when it’s busy, usually in the morning. They have a good smattering of traffic in all directions, with headings, VORs, waypoints, airways, and some twists like the Air Devil departure (instead of SIDs). It’s also good to listen to some larger airports with parallel runways (Ft Lauderdale, LAX) because of the RNAV use, especially on takeoff.

can you ask them to re-read?

It would be helpful to know the exact route he filed for rather than just the departure procedure. We know it is not AF, but what was it? Might give us a little info up front about the fixes so when we hear them, we already know how to spell them. I got all wrong by listening only. Like, I wrote Crubling rather than Kremming. I wasn't close.

Thanks. Not all the filed routes were available off public records, so went with the next best thing and brought up the departure procedure plates with the fixes. On a full route clearance, aircraft won't always be getting their filed points anyways so you may hear a fix you don't recognize if you don't reference the charts.

I wish you can get this onto MSFS, the current ATC on there just sucks.

As a VFR only pilot, I'm very confused by this. For a long IFR route in a fast jet, how on Earth am I supposed to know and be able to spell the name of a random navaid somewhere hundreds of miles away from my departure point? How is this a sustainable way to get a route?

All the fixes they say are listed on the plate. If it is as planned, it's not that much difficult. The real problem is when you receive one you haven't planned for but in that case, you can ask the controller about exact spelling of the fix.

@@antiquehealbot6543which plate? I could be flying coast to coast.

@alk672 Departure plates often have the most information you need and after that, they will clear you with designated airways. A lot of times, they will clear you as filed IFR plan.

@@antiquehealbot6543sure, if it's AF I don't need to know anything. But if it's a full route clearance across the country, they'll just come at me with random fixes and VORs. Will they spell it for me if it's not a part of the filed route? Or am I supposed to know all of them somehow, and if I don't then I ask them to spell?

@alk672 If you check your foreflight and see a cleared IFR route for crossing the entire country like SFO to JFK, you will find only a handful of routes. And it gets much simpler at the end of the route too.
