This was my first time truly cloud surfing, and it was awesome!
Thanks so much to Ali for inviting me along for this flight, and thanks to the weather gods for making it interesting :P

Here are some further details regarding the actual weather and our decision making process:
The TAF for London was noteworthy for light rain and marginal VFR conditions with ceilings of between 1500 to 3000 for the time we were expecting to be there but not much else. We experienced a real time demonstration of how fast things could change while airborne. Using G1000 satellite weather, Foreflight/Stratus weather on iPad, and ATC chatter from other planes in the area, we started developing a picture for what the weather was doing; and what it was doing was happening much faster than forecast. We concluded that even though we can make it to London before it got hit, a full stop landing and lunch as planned would ground us for an extended period of time. Shortly after us departing the area, the system hit London resulting in the need to issue 4 SPECI METAR's within 1 hour. Although disappointed to change plans, as many of us would be under similar circumstances, Ali and I were glad with our correct assessment of a very fluid situation and our ability to make the correct calls and stick to them.
I want to thank several users from reddit/flying for helping me dig up the archival weather info to confirm the details for this video, as it was a couple months after the flight that I did the editing.

DISCLAIMER: I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial.I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feed back is invited; however, please keep it positive

MrAviation101 Yeah - this was a pretty awesome flight. I'm just back from a flight in the Super Cub where I was doing circuits after a storm front had passed and before another arrived... I was very careful to get a thorough Wx briefing so I knew what to expect, but the gusty conditions and variable cross wind was crazy - not a day for a passenger - but a great one to nail down my tail wheel fundamentals!

This has to be one of your best videos yet. I just received my IFR endorsement a few months ago. As hard as the training was, it pays off tenfold. It's such a relief to know you can plan a long trip without having to worry about cloud clearance. It just makes flying tremendously more enjoyable.

Yet another great video. Thanks man. I remember doing this in an Army Lynx heli on the way back from the UK to Germany...then landing at Gütersloh with the cloud base down to 50 feet. The pilot was flying the approach on instruments, and the Commander staring out of the cockpit, hands hovering over the controls, ready to snatch them off the pilot the second he saw landing lights. Those guys earned their money that day.

Wonderful, as usual, thanks. Yes, I like the Diamonds, I was fond of the diesel-powered DA42 when I first saw it at ILA 2004, and I did most of my flight training on the DA20-C1 (which came out in 1998). The video that made me want my IR the most was this: Big Bear Take Off+ Flight (Part 1) . The sheer beauty of breaking out of the clouds on top to then cancel IFR and go VFR-on-top ... In practice it'll be a while before I can afford and justify the additional training, which I estimate will cost about as much as the entire PPL training.

Great Video as always FlightChops! There are two major hurdles to clear when you get your IFR rating. The first is the rating itself, and the second is building up the courage to fly into IMC without your CFI sitting next to you. I haven't cleared the second one yet, lol. Still waiting for that perfect thin layer. Good luck with your training!

A few things. 1st this is an awesome video. I've loved your previous videos but there is a definite improvement lately since your rebranding. It's more like watching an aviation tv show now. 2nd, this so reminds me of my first time in the clouds. Clouds were heavy but there was no rain and wind was fairly low so we had a pretty smooth flight, all I could think of as I zigged and zagged through the towering columns was, "THIS is why we fly." Keith Vander Wees Thanks! as a non pilot, did you find this one too geeky and hard to follow at times? I'm trying to strike a balance, but this one was pretty technical in places, eh?

***** not geeky or too hard to follow at all but then again even as a non pilot I find all of this very interesting.

Hi. I have watched some of your vids and really enjoy them. Not much on tv so I find real things to watch. I have been a paraglider pilot in the rockies near Lake Louise Alta. for more than 20 years and recently started flying powered paragliders, a trike set up actually. keep up the great work and thanks for the awesome ride alongs. cheers from Golden B.C. I really enjoy your enthusiasm and your videos. Some of it, wait, a good portion of it is still over my head, especially with 2 lessons in but I enjoy it just the same. Don't give up on your IFR !!! Thank you for the quality footage. If your ever in the states, specifically NJ, look me up. My little airport that I'm training out of is KMJX.

I remember I started my training in a 172 with G1000s with integrated autopilot. Then a year later I went for the Instrument and I wanted to fly 6 pack so I got my Instrument rating in a PA-28 with dual VOR and one Garmin 430. What an experience and just overall different flying technology. I am glad I did this, however. I let me commercial rated buddy fly who has only flown G1000's. He said it was almost impossible to shoot approaches compared to flying the G1000s because G1000s and autopilot made everything so easy.

@ 14:27 VLE (flying with the gear our) for the DA42 is 194 KIAS. Gear extension can occur at 194 KIAS or below. Gear retraction can occur at 156 KIAS or below. VNE is 194 KIAS, so he's basically right to say you can drop the gear whenever, as long as you're below red-line (which you should always be under red-line).
