Thanks for posting, Mini. This is exactly what I need, er want. Looking forward to the installation videos.

Great video series! I have a Sherline lathe and mill. You've offered several brilliant projects to improve what Sherline has. Before looking at your series, I had purchased the iGaging cheaper DROs. I haven't come up with a satisfactory way to attaching them to my lathe (I wanted to start with the lathe first since I use the lathe more). I was going to put them on a bigger manual lathe I have, but I'm looking forward to what you come up with. The CNC application from Sherline doesn't allow for manual adjustment, so DROs is the only other option I see. There's several people who've made DROs from shaft encoders and Arduinos, but that's more money, and no guarantee they will work. With the iGaging, at least that will work out of the box and there's no need to make circuit boards, programs, etc. I look forward to seeing more on your video series!

Great video, answered every question I had on dimensions and what came in the package.

Your videos are the absolute best when it comes to the Sherline equipment! Extremely informative and so easy to follow. Thanks to for making them available. I am curious to know if you have a follow up video to this one showing the installation of the DRO units on the mill and lathe if you did it as well. I am on the verge of purchasing a Sherline 6000 mill and lathe system and am not sure if I want to go with their version of the DRO for now or with the igaging set up. I am totally new to machining and will likely learn without CNC for now and just add it later. Also, have you done a video showing the completed version of the Frankenmill?

The cables have micro-b connectors at both ends, and are not shielded (although that may change from batch to batch). All that extra length makes the cables prone to picking up interference. Replacing the cables with shorter shielded cables is recommended. You will have to pop the plastic case of the reader head open to unplug that end of the cable.

After perusing a number of your videos I finally decided to add this DRO to my Sherline lathe. It was quite an endevor as the lathe is very small and getting a good configuration took some careful thought. If you'd like to see the DRO in action please let me know. I'll be adding this same DRO to my Sherline mill soon.

Yes, post something that shows how you mounted the unit. Looking at getting the Sherline 4400 and I need it with a DRO.

Very thorough review. When can we see them installed and in action?

Did you ever do another video of how you installed this unit?

I like that these do not interfere with the handwheels. Looking forward to seeing how you mount them. I have the cnc kit on my mill so the Sherline dro's are not a option, and I like the adjustable zero handwheels. I have the Sherline DRO's on my lathe. They are incredibly accurate, and yes you can set the backlash. It is adjusted by first using a indicator to determine the amount of slop. Holding down the power button brings up the backlash scales and you adjust it to the number you indicated by pressing the button for that axis. It moves in .0005" increments . Every so often I recheck and update the number if needed. I am often surprised at how accurate they are. I don't even work for Sherline

+Marco Terenzi Thank you Marco! That is very good information that I was not aware of. I honestly wish I had the Sherline DRO also just for the convenience of mounting very easily and the RPM readout.

+Marco Terenzi I forgot to mention... you can mount DRO on CNC if you want to go that direction. Sherline has an instruction sheet on how to accomplish it and part numbers needed. www.sherline.com/drooncnc.pdf

I've poked around a little bit and looks like they've removed the document, not sure why they did it or if it was a mistake. Might try contacting support and seeing if they have copy that can be e-mailed.

Hi. Thanks for making this video, I found it very informative. I am seriously considering buying a set of these DROs for my milling machine. Have you used them for machining operations yet and if so, what is your opinion of them? Thank you.

Could you explain the workings of the controls, please. Thanks.

Just fyi, the sherline offering has backlash accountability that is adjustable in .0005th

How tough was it to mount the DRO to the mill? Any followup videos?

Is this DRO a standard quadrature readout that can be used with other brands of encoders, possibly on other machines? Certainly micro-USB cables are not what you normally find on older lathes & mills... That single sheet of instructions didn't look like it had setup instructions for any bar other than what came with the DRO.

How did you install it on Sherline lathe?
@pauldevey86288 жыл бұрын
You could hook up an Android tablet to the iGage scales. Check out: www.yuriystoys.com/p/android-dro.html

Guys my experience has been that these are junk. they have absolutely no protection from coolant anywhere. One drop is all it takes. Then you start playing with brake cleaner and air gun to dry it all out and get it running again. Now that is the least of your problem, but when threading and it seems like all is running well and you are off by say .010" then you have real problems. But now 16 months after not using this item display doesn't work period. Get the Chinese glass scale units, figure out how to mount it and be done with it. This thing has been plagued with problems for me from day one. Sad to say the Chinese care more about their customers than these guys.
