you dont need a block to have a firebar, they aren't linked at all. I think the star block thing is actually not true (and probably spread by me), it comes from a mistranslation in a romhacking editor

Fire Bars can definitely exist in any level, and stars can also be used in any level, even a castle, just fine. (If you star-kill Bowser, you get just 200 points instead of 5000, and if it's a fake Bowser, it doesn't show its true self as it dies.) And, Fire Bars are sprites, while blocks containing stars are objects, so they definitely wouldn't be able to share the same "call number" or whatever anyway.

@@Ultimaximus Actually, the star kills besides the Hammer Bros. really do give no points. You can check with the star grabbed at 8:48 for example. The Goombas he killed with it did not add to his score. (However, I did notice that standard stomps that don't display a score value do indeed actually add 100 to score.) And, I wager that the 1-up trick on the stairs can indeed work, but at 9:38, the shell was too close to the next step up when he attempted it, so it just rebounded through him, which is a known thing that can happen anyway.

@@SomeGuy712x Oh I didn't see that Goombas killed with the star don't add points. However, at 14:19, he gets 100 points for using a star to kill a piranha plant and a bullet bill, so it's based on the enemy that's killed, which is unexpected. You might be right on the 1-up trick

So, anything that would've been worth 200 for a star-kill in the original game is worth 100 here, and Goombas that are normally worth 100 for star-killing are worth nothing here. (However, Hammer Bros. are normally worth 1000 for a star-kill, so they still give big points here.)

no those are just the green platform levels (same as 1-3 and 2-1). I mean the actual mushroom platforms like 4-2 warp zone and 4-3 in the original. It seems they got replaced with cloud stages.

@@Kosmicd12 Ah okay, I always thought of SM1's 1-3 as being mushroom platforms and never thought of 4-3 as being different, somehow, but you're right, they're clearly green platforms and I guess my memory is hazy. :)

doing setup/equipment videos are a little dangerous because it tends to make people think they need a lot more stuff than they do lol. That being said, I don't really have anything special for NES other than the system itself is modded to output component video. I don't use any special add-ons or controllers or anything like that.

@@Kosmicd12 awesome. My hunch is that's what I'm looking for. I've got it in my head that the latency from emulators on my raspi and g+w Mario 35th are limiting what I was sure I was able to do back when I revisited mb1 about 20 years ago. Playing mb3 on console validated some of my latency concerns (much easier to do things I depended on) and mb2 was informative because a-press duration didn't seem to impact jump heights which I still think is strange. Turns out I don't have an mb1 cart like I thought. I cannot wait to grab one and do some clipping.
