I love seeing a wide range of colors in my burns, and the best way I've been able to achieve that in the past is with spray shellac. However, I tried a couple new things in this video, and I think I've found a better way...

That’s very cool. Because I didn’t know that you had to wait for shellac to drive before you could burn it on wax or is that just another way to do it?

It's another way to do it. Probably the most popular way, though...

Another question: Can you use a heat gun for burning or does it have to be a torch?

I know other artists have had some success using a heat gun, but I have never tried it. I believe you'll get better results with a torch.

Another question: could you have just left the second layer the way it was after you shellacked it) and not burned it? I'm new to this so don't know all the procedures.

Yes, I could have left it like that if it was going to be my final layer. The hard, unburned shellac is too great a barrier to be between layers of wax. I think the shellac would keep it from fusing. But as a final layer it's great!

Yes. Another reason why the cube was a bit more work than it was worth... ugh.

I'm using alcohol inks to color my shellac. The when it's dry, I burn it with a blowtorch.

Sprayed? doesn't one usually brush it on ?

Yes. But sometimes I spray it on, especially if I want to use India ink that can't be mixed into shellac.

Yes, but the shellac acts as a type of seal, so the ink won't run or smear.
