Writing titles on Etsy isn't hard, or at least it shouldn't be. After watching this video you should have an idea about who you're writing the titles for (it's not the search engine) and why some things you've heard about how titles work on Etsy are just wrong!

I fill out the entire title but I make sure that the 1st part of it is human readable so it shows up nice under the thumbnail. After that, it's a free-for-all of keywords and I don't repeat any words in the title even if my targeted "keyword phrases" have repeated words. So if I'm trying to match for both "watercolor flowers" and "Watercolor Painting" I only do "Watercolor Flower Painting" I should note that I rank for the short-tail keywords but I wouldn't leave it at that because people do search on colors, style of decor, and room that it's used in. So what I might think is a short-tail might actually be too specific for a shopper if they haven't even narrowed down that they want a "watercolor" painting when they start looking for "wall decor" I know for a fact that I don't rank high because of shop age (14 years) because there were several years that I let things go a bit because of other priorities. I had to basically start from scratch with all my listings. It's hard to build an Etsy shop even with a good product and experience. I had a shop filled with proven products that I knew were evergreen sellers and pages and pages of 5 star reviews. It's still taken me 2 years to get my mojo back. It takes parience

Re: SKU in the titles, you didn’t mention it, but as a seller of supplies I’ve been putting the SKU in my titles since day one. I have found that repeat customers are using my SKU numbers *as a search term* to find and repurchase items from my shop.

I used to do this, mostly because of the Square issue, but Etsy told me I shouldn’t. I now have listings with variations and each variation has a different SKU, so on those it won’t work.

I’d like to add regarding the SKUs in the titles. If you sell in person and use Square, SKUs in the title show up when you are searching for your product using Square; they don’t anywhere else.
@catmatraz
@catmatraz 2 жыл бұрын
Oh really. So if you sell in person and use square you cant search it to specify a certain SKU to sell? What about where you have variations? I've never put SKU in the title but just might need to start doing so if that's the case!
@1wholovestrees
@1wholovestrees 2 жыл бұрын
@@catmatraz Yes. Square doesn’t copy over your Etsy SKUs. You have to enter the title of the item in order to locate it. And variations in Square are a PITA.

That's why I use them in the titles, they print out on Etsy receipts that way so it's easier to find the things I need to make them! I probably have 800 little things that I use to make molds and without some kind of system that I can reference quickly it would be a nightmare.

I put my SKU in the title because if not it makes it difficult to locate the item when needed. I was already redoing my photos and since hearing your tips on this video I will also update my title using all 140 characters, consisting of complete keyword sentences. Switching from Shopify back to Etsy demanded a format change since the app I used required optimization for Google, which had to be shorter titles. I am finding that in my updating, it's easier for me to take the keywords and form my title instead of vice versa.

I was getting confused between Etsy recommending short titles and you and other Etsy KZfaqrs recommending long titles. Thanks for explaining the situation. We're unusual in that we have "medium" titles. Our various online storefronts sell items officially licensed by artists and illustrators, and our Etsy store was registered in our primary B2B machining business name instead of the different online store name. So, our titles look like this: artist name + item name + "from" + online shop name That usually takes up a lot of real estate, but not 140 characters worth. Time to add a couple of keywords, then? And although we do mention the items are licensed in the descriptions -- e.g. "®(Artist name) licensed image" -- should "officially licensed" also go into the title?
@KaraBuntin
@KaraBuntin 2 жыл бұрын
I think i would put officially licensed in just for customer information. It doesn’t really matter how long the title is, but if you use all the space you can it will give Etsy more information about the listing.

@@KaraBuntin Thanks for the insight, Kara. We'll likely add in the extra title space that our e-commerce items are laser-cut (our major business is laser machining). That might make our products stand out a bit more.

I know you didn’t get into it, but aren’t shorter titles more customer friendly and less spammy looking? Also, I noticed on the app it will cut off long titles. I appreciate your videos as always!
@KaraBuntin
@KaraBuntin 2 жыл бұрын
Titles that are understandable are more customer friendly, but length doesn't matter. I had a whole thing in there about how the search engine reads the whole thing but it started getting into google SEO so I edited it out...Just because the title is truncated in the display doesn't mean that the search engine doesn't see it. The customer sees what the display shows, but the search engine sees the entire thing.

What do you think about exactly matching? If the algorithm matches one-to-one, I have to use my main keyword over and over. wouldn't that be spam? Also, I can't use different words. I am trying to use a long tail keyword between two commas that is both logical and understandable to the customer so that it is exactly matching. I use the same word over and over in the tags. Thanks for your helpful videos!
@KaraBuntin
@KaraBuntin 2 жыл бұрын
Exact matching is important to a certain extent, but not as much as it used to be. You don't need to use the same word over and over, the search engine doesn't need that much repetition anymore.

I have so many ideas for my shop and some of them don’t necessarily fit the theme of my listing for example I sell workout shirts and shaker bottles. Should I make a new shop to sell my bath soaks, muscle rubs, and bath bombs? I struggle to keep up with the marketing of it all due to having a full time job. Or should I just let it be and go without those items? Do you think it would be a bad idea to have a wide variety of listings even if they fit within the category of fitness?
@KaraBuntin
@KaraBuntin 2 жыл бұрын
If they fit within the fitness category then brand your shop that way and make the tagline something about that. Then everything in it will make sense. The things you're listing all make sense to me to keep them together, there's definitely a connection.
