Just wonderful! The last minutes - from ca. 28.30 - make up one of the most spellbinding endings in the entire genre. At the very end one thinks of the Marschallin's "In Gottes Namen!" as she leaves Octavian with young Sophie. This is another final break-up, a farewell to a home and a native country.

Great performance. This is one of the first Medtner pieces I ever heard (during an "obscure concertos" phase in college) and I played it to death, but this recording is still able to reveal things I'd never heard in it. Have to agree with another commenter about the 7:00 section, it's so richly layered and clear at the same time. I've heard that Medtner wasn't really into concertos, and only wrote them because audiences demanded big showy pieces before they'd pay any attention to a newer composer. Somehow he managed to get the big and showy parts in this one without losing any of his signature style. And for a guy who wrote very few orchestral works, this orchestration is pretty good!
@SpaghettiToaster5 жыл бұрын
Judging from letters, Rachmaninoff probably helped him out with the orchestration.

Medtner disliked composing for the orchestra He composed the piano part with the melodic structure of the orchestra in his head in about an year, and proceeded to take more than two more years to finish the orchestra part…

Love this work. None better. There's a lot of Rachmaninoff in Medtner and versa visa. When in teens I believe they were friends in 🇷🇺 Just adding here, Medtner dedicated his 7th sonata. Nightwind to Sergei Rachmaninoff. I thought that was great. It was part of his epitaph. Think of that.
@confuoco52833 жыл бұрын
Rachmaninoff also dedicated his 4th piano concerto to Medtner, and Medtner dedicated his 2nd concerto in return.

@@confuoco5283 i believe or recall reading Rachmaninoff and Medtner, and V. Horowitz had been split up in Mother Russia during the war and they plus others left for other lands and reconnected later on . Correct me if wrong. Some went to usa others england, or Canada 🇨🇦. All their possessions taken they were somewhat broken.
@robertflynn66863 жыл бұрын
Just to finally add here When V. Horowitz made his usa ny, Carnegie Debut Rachmaninoff made sure he was in the front row ensuring V. Horowitz played his 4th very correctly. He played it so violent he broke a base string which was immediately fixed and the concert went on.

Medtner usually repays several hearings, rather than first impressions.

I think this is how Medtner's composition is supposed to sound like... this is the first time i've ever heard in its entirety the solo of the trumpet: in a 50 years old recording of much worse sound quality and resolution compared to much newer recordings.
