I heard him play Scriabin twice - in a little town in Germany in the 80ies ... I was fascinated - after the wonderful performance in the townhall I accidentally had the chance to stay together with him and a small group of skrjabin-addicts - smoking was allowed in public places at that time - the excellent pianist Igor Zhukov was a real hard smoker - we talked in English, he was a very sympathetic and modest man. I will never forget these hours - equipped with his records I returned home late at night - with an unforgettable experience! Other interpretations of Skjabin's piano compositions did not touch me the same way his work touched me - I still am one of his greatest fans. pianotreasures - thank you for posting!

Igor Zhukov's performance is not only pensive and charming, but also technically 'correct' in every aspect, as well as, thoroughly Russian. I've enjoyed listening to what I would call his transcendent execution over and over again. It is a monumental recording and serves as a model for my own performances of these unique pieces. I'm very grateful for this particular posting. Thank you.

Instead of repeating what others have said, I'd like to note that Igor has a dope af drip. Those tonal embroidered stripes on the shirt, with the balanced statement of the cufflinks? Diagonal tie pattern of stripes of varying size and color, subtle modernist flair? The tie bar finishing touch? Yes, after watching this video I can say... I'm impressed by Zhukov. Very impressed.

But to start repeating others, this is one of my favorite piano tones ever. Rich. Warm. Resonant. But still has the treble sparkle you need for Scriabin. And the interpretation... Bravo, Igor. Bravo.

What I like about Zhukov is that it's all decided. You might be cynical and think that he plays this way (less "impressively" than other pianists) because that's how he can play - to his limitations. But that's not the case. If he decides to he can nail one million notes a minute and make them either slick (Medtner Concerto) or turn them into a soundscape (Scriabin Fantasy). He doesn't get hung up on making everything in a 3 or 4-stave Scriabin score prominent. You have to decide what should come out and what there just isn't time to emphasise. Zhukov decides: and what he does bring out has a concentration of tone, flow and pedalling which is just "fuck you, this is how I read it". I sometimes disagree with the score in front of me: but then it's up to me to become as good a pianist as him!

The Bolsheviks, Lenin and Stalin, suppressed Scriabin's music as individualistic. I guess the latter Soviets resurrected his music, maybe a precursor to Glasnost, Perestroika and the downfall of the U.S.S.R.

When? Scriabin died before the revolution. I always heard that he was not popular after death. From my knowledge, there wasn't much around to suppress. Also, the Scriabin museum was founded in 1922, and Lenin died in 1924. There was work there on a high-tech synthesizer while Stalin was still in power. Why would that have been allowed if Scriabin's music was supposed to be suppressed?
@mikekevitt1322
@mikekevitt1322 11 ай бұрын
@@mysterium364 There was Scriabin's music and any notion to perform it to suppress, even though he died before the revolution and wasn't popular. Suppressing it was a matter of principle to the Soviets. Maybe Lenin and Stalin loved his music even though it was suppressed, and in spite of principle. Don't know. The Soviets ran a strange, chaotic, contradictory and violent regime anyway.
@mysterium364
@mysterium364 11 ай бұрын
@@mikekevitt1322 What principle? I know they suppressed the avant-garde under the pretext of anti-elitism (a decision that I think was made in error by a well-meaning government) but I don't think Scriabin was really considered Avant-Garde by the time this suppression started (late 1920's if I remember correctly) because even Roslavets was able to innovate freely for a while after Scriabin died, and to an untrained ear, Scriabin sounds very traditional relative to Roslavets. If you know a book about musical suppression in the early years of the USSR, I would probably read it. Sounds interesting and I don't know much.
