Here's a great French suited Italian card deck from Milan and the Lombard region. It has some of the most interesting and bizarre court cards in the country. Enjoy!

I discovered your channel recently after picking up a Modiano Trevigiane deck. I am really enjoying your videos and learning more about Italian playing cards. After watching your channel, I would really like to get a set of Sarde, dal negro Piacentine, and Toscane cards. Thanks for making these videos 😁

Thanks so much, I'm so glad to hear that these videos are encouraging the use of the Italian card decks! Definitely get those cards, and use them often! Don't forget to get a pack of the Sicilian ones too! Thanks for watching.

That deck is called "milanesi estero" which means milanesi abroad, because they use it in Canton Ticino, the italian speaking region of Switzerland, the differences are minimal. the "regular" italian deck it has the red case and cards don't have numbers and words on it. however i have the milanesi estero at home because are comfortable

I ordered and just received my Sicilian deck! That's the next video I'm looking forward to! Pretty sure every Fante is female in that deck too.

Excellent! Enjoy it. Mine is getting a bit worn down from use and I may try to get the Modiano Sicilian deck next to see if there are any differences. You are correct, the Fante all seem to be female and very similar in appearance to the early version of the Napoletane Fante. Stay tuned for more!

@@Play-In-Games The Sicilian deck I have is Modiano! I'll try to notice any differences if I can from your video when it comes out. I did already notice that the back art is different from my other Napoletane Modianos. It features a head with three legs emerging from it. Not sure the symbology there?

The Biscione comes from Bestia, the same origin of the english word "Beast". And we also do not know how it appeared. It was the symbol of Visconti family and Sforza family. Some people say that it was inspired by the brass snake of the bible, who bring the cure for the sick people. So it would be a symbol of health and life. However, the eating-baby thing is when things get weird. It probably represented a child or a defeated sarracen being swallowed. The old accounts about the emblem says that it represents a sarracen being killed by the snake. Some accounts say that Otoni Visconti battled against Volupe the Sarracen, and after defeating him, he took the helmet with a snake to be the symbol of his own family. Other version say that the child is being born of the snake because the Visconti were believed to be descendants of Alexander the Great, who was believed to be descendant of Olympias and god Jupiter (Zeus), because the myth says that Zeus transformed himself in dragon and copulated with her, impregnating her with Alexander. Some people say that it is a reference of another god: Saturn (Chronos). The ruling class of Italy at that time was very involved in the study of ancient paganism and symbolism. Chronos/Saturn killed his children to become the only king. Valentina Visconti, Louis d'Orleans, and other membes of the ruling elite of north Italy were accused of witchcraft during 1300s-1400s. Yes, it is WEIRD, but it is a very interesting topic. Most ancient versions are about Otoni Visconti defeating the sarracen. Sorry about my english!

The child had previously been eaten by the snake, he was the son of Bonifacio (from Pavia) and the daughter of the Duke of Milan. Bonifacio then kills the snake and it vomits the child, miraculously alive. This is the legend the Visconti used to tell to give prestige to the symbol (which derived from the name of their first land, Anguis which in Latin meant snake). Visconti were one of the most important noble families in Milan

Remind me not to move to Milan if I intend to start a family lol 😂. I have to wonder if people who use this deck get that same confusion that most people get from seeing the "suicidal" king of hearts for the first time
