ii V I Chord Progressions Are the Best!

ii V I chord progressions, or 2 5 1s, are super popular with songwriters, composers and improvisers in all genres. They are used to change key, or just to loop back to the tonic chord… but they’re also used in loads of very different, arguably even more interesting ways.
This video looks a bit at some standard ways to use 251s, with popular examples, as well as more slightly ‘out there’ versions and uses. In all honesty, there’s probably no limit to how many different ways you can use the famous progression!

Wow, this was great! Packed with information, a bit challenging at times (in a good way) and presented clearly and in a very accessible manor. I made a lot of notes and am looking forward to playing around with some of these ideas once I get out of bed and grab my guitar. If you're not already teaching at a music school (and even if you are), you'd be a real assett.

Gloria Gaynor's ' I will survive' appears to start with m VI m II then V then I in key of C i.e. Am Dm G C then the IV ie F appears to fly off to an E key; where V Bm resolves to a Tonic E sus/ E major.

Am Dm G C F Bdim E is the diatonic circle of fifths in Am, and the E is acting as the V of Am 👍

@@bigyellowpraxis Oh each chord there stays in the Am key, every 4th chord yes, I to IV then IV to VII, VII to III so on,. Thankyou!

07:20 Confused...Does that McCartney song 'go through the Diatonic circle of fifths' in a minor key? The first 2 5 1 appears to be in C major ie Dm G C then there's an F chord that links up with the Am key (ie F is IV of C major key and VI of the Am key) , as you demonstrate, what follows is B Dim E7 Am 2 5 1 . So did it move around the Circlle of Fifths there? It simply goes from C major to A minor. A true movement around the Circle of Fitfhs in a minor key would be Am key to Em key to Bm key or anti-clockwise Am key to Dm key to Gm key.

The diatonic circle of fifths is Am Dm G C F Bdim E repeat, so yes, that song does precisely that

@@bigyellowpraxis Diatonic yes, thankyou! I was confusing it with the Dominant circle of 5ths i..e / e.g. G C D A E so on or the relative Am Em Bm F#m.
