Ween did a cover of Zappas song “what’s the ugliest part of my body?” Yeah they really don’t like him that much. They are nothing alike musically. Ween actually said they didn’t like devo initially either but now they say they like devo. Perhaps they are trying to distance themselves from their obvious influences.

Good Day from New York City, the Fourth of July, I appreciate your love of this great and under appreciated band. "Live! In The Air Age" charted at here in the United States at #65 while "Modern Music" was their highest charting studio album here charting at #88. "Sunburst Finish" peaked at #96 and "Drastic Plastic" at #95.

How about just because it's not very good? I've never heard a Zappa song that left me feeling like I need that song in my life. I don't blame Ween for not caring for it either.

You say Bill Nelson isn't 'great' at any particular thing, and then describe Sleep That Burns as a 'tour de force' of a bunch of things that he's amazing at. I'm going with the latter assessment: Nelson is brilliant at pretty much everything he does.

I will go a step further and say it is not only good, but a great album. Not perfect, no. It is not as consistently great as the Close to the Edge album. Sides one and four have only short moments that drag on a bit. Side two has a longer stretch that does this. But that leaves the rest of these three sides, some forty minutes of music, right up there near their very best work. Close to the Edge and The Gates of Delirium are epic length full-side tracks that are consistently good throughout the 18 to 20 minutes. That may not be what we have here with Tales, but there is much more about this album that is good rather than that which is not. Most fans agree that side three is the weakest side. I listen to sides one, two, and four as much as any music I own. With regard to Steve Howe: He is brilliant. Period.

You covered a lot but the main thing that separates Prog from other forums of music is this: Average music has it's theme and it just hangs around it with some garnishment then it returns to the theme and then it's over Prog keeps progressing forward with the theme and in time. Beginning, moving forward 🕕the theme, progessing fordwad,➡️➡️➡️➡️ return to the theme and to the end

I was a teenager at the start of the 70's. Procal Harum's A Whiter Shade Of Pale ticks all the boxes and deserves credit for putting down the first piece of the Prog Rock jigsaw puzzle. Also "Fire" by The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, and also The Moody Blues. My take on what makes a Prog band or album, is that it rejectes the American influences of Blues, Country, Rock and Roll, Soul and RnB. and took inspiration from the world of Folk, Classical and medieval/Church music. Two of my favourite bands of the time were Curved Air and Barclay James Harvest.

@stealthracer 2 күн бұрын
I would agree with your take. Progressive rock came about because people were fed up with playing, and listening to, music based on the blues and rock and roll. After all Genesis was founded by 5 guys at Charterhouse public school. What interest would a bunch of young, white, middle class Englishmen have in music that originated with old, black, working class Americans?

A fine example of what this vid delves into would be "Lost Horizons" by the Gin Blossoms. It was the opener of their biggest-selling album, and should have been a hit. It's every bit as good as "Hey Jealousy" and "Found Out About You." No surprise; these are all Doug Hopkins tunes. I raise my glass to the deceased artist who got a raw deal at his moment of triumph.

07:20 Confused...Does that McCartney song 'go through the Diatonic circle of fifths' in a minor key? The first 2 5 1 appears to be in C major ie Dm G C then there's an F chord that links up with the Am key (ie F is IV of C major key and VI of the Am key) , as you demonstrate, what follows is B Dim E7 Am 2 5 1 . So did it move around the Circlle of Fifths there? It simply goes from C major to A minor. A true movement around the Circle of Fitfhs in a minor key would be Am key to Em key to Bm key or anti-clockwise Am key to Dm key to Gm key.
@bigyellowpraxis

By 1976, I knew at least a dozen Americans who were acquainted with BBD. Sunburst Finish was their breakthrough album in my part of the country, Gainesville, Florida. Some tracks off Modern Music were played on the Univ. of Florida radio station, WUFR. The group did open for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on several dates in 1977, none of them in Florida! At least I have six treasured albums as reminders of their greatness.
