@@aerynlovell4754 Most turbo engines have minimal lag. Mine is a 4cyl and there's hardly any and I tow. I'm confused on your description of the turbo setup and believe you have it wrong.
@aerynlovell4754
@aerynlovell4754 Жыл бұрын
@Kenneth O A supercharger is connected to the engine and therefore has ZERO LAG. You just said with a small turbo it has HARDLY ANY LAG. You seem to be confused because "hardly any" isn't the same as NO LAG. And if you work on your reading comprehension, you would know my biggest issue with turbos is the excessive amount of tubing (compared to a supercharger) and because it is connected to the exhaust the heat from the exhaust is transferred to the turbo then to the intake air. Any discussion about turbos vs. superchargers talks about parasitic loss from the supercharger vs. turbo lag and heat transfer from turbos.

Automotive Inquiry just put out a really good series comparing the Chevy 6.6 gasser with the Ford Godzilla, pulling about 15k. He showed on video the difference between using cruise control and not using it while going down hill. No surprise, cruise control maintained speed while not using cruise control allowed the trucks to speed up. The idea that people don't use cruise control while towing, comes from years gone by when cruise control systems were truly terrible. Nowadays things have changed, and if you want to properly test vehicles, you should test them for things they've been designed for.

I towed a car trailer and car through the Sierra Nevadas, weighed in at 7500lbs, in 110F with my 2018 Colorado LT 3.6 and transmission temps never went above 180F. I regret selling that truck in hope that this generation would be better. That 2.7L 4 cyclinder engines are having a lot of problems on the Silverados. Im gonna pass on the 2023 trucks and look for a used 3.6L ZR2 Colorado. Naturally aspirated engines will always be more reliable than force induction.

Ike Gauntlet isn't necessarily practical but actually even better, it's a torture test; trucks that do well on it inspire a lot of confidence for the rest of us that won't be pushing our trucks this hard. Otherwise, yes, TFL has a few other tests that are practical, like the mpg loops.

They should offer the 3.0 turbo diesel. It may not have as much power as the the new Ranger Raptor. But that TQ and the fuel economy would be a big plus. As of right now the 3.0 TD Silverado has the best hwy mileage out of all the full-size offerings. It will allow the Colorado to also claim best hwy mileage as well.

A mid size truck towing a nearly 7K lb box up that mountain is pretty impreasive. Period. It's never going to do it with as much ease as a larger truck. I think the transmission mapping could be much better in tow/haul mode but overall, that truck performed fairly well. I am excited to see the new Ranger and Tacoma in comparison although the Ranger doesnt have a "Trail boss" trim level. For 75% of the population that needs or wants a truck, the new mid sizers are more than adequate.

That is the single handed best way to break in a turbo engine to haul a load like that on hills like you did. My past Dodge Cummins engines got the same treatment and when you shut down overnight and go stone cold you will find the engine a totally different unit in terms of performance and mileage.

Those high temps shows GM has probably pushed the tuning as far as they can reliably go with this engine. Remember GM only has the 2.7 in all the mid-size trucks. They just change the tuning for more power in the higher trims and options.

I was bit surprised that it seemed to be a bit lethargic getting up to speed and seemed pretty loud getting there. I don't exactly recall how much you towed with the Ranger Tremor, but it seemed to do it easier? I thought this 2.7 would/will be great in this truck. The trans temps on a cold day are a bit bothersome unless GM designed it this way for a reason...... Nice truck overall and definitely on my shopping list.

Objectively it was a 4/5 Star run, but I think it failed to pass the eye test. It realistically only deserved 3.5/5 stars. The transmission and gear hunting should have been bigger demerits. The new Ranger with the 2.7 and 10 speed will likely get 4.5/5 when it completes the same run.

Mr Truck firing in all 8 cylinders today!! 😂😂. “Why’d you buy a urine coloured truck?” Hahaha!! This is about what I expected from the Colorado. Maybe we can see if a truck from the press fleet WITH cruise control could manage differently?? Be an interesting experiment. I’m sure the fuel economy will improve with the cruise control. Always does, but I suspect the grade braking would downshift one more time. The transmission temperatures, I wouldn’t care unless they go too high. Toyota runs em hot as well. Could be an efficiency factor now that they run synthetic oils in them exclusively. Things do change over time. I’m sure we will see the High Output version towing on a hot day to try to cover all the examples. There’s the Canyon as well which GM has chosen to aim at a different demographic than the Colorado. Smart idea to widen the demographics overall for the market. Nice review and I agree with the rating!! Hard to stay objective when it’s your own vehicle, but Andrey did very well indeed! Thanks for using your truck Andrey!! Stay safe, team TFL!!

He will flip it in less than 3 years, so I whole heartedly hope he abuses the shit out of this thing between now and then. Give a true impression of how the GM can stand up to short term owners that work their vehicles hard. Still waiting for the payload tests that they never seem to do. (hauling gravel, bricks, lumber, etc.) Few press loaners at Davids Ranch got a work out. But that should be included in everything they test. IMO.

Truck was level. 2.5 inch squat is good. Also the trans temp was fine. When trucks run too cool its worse than running where this truck ran. Another thing, adding a extra air to air cooler is good but running the cooler through the radiator is better for heat transfer. Liquid transfers heat better. I knoq your truck doesn't have cruise but if you test one with cruise I'd usd it on the downhill that way the truck will shift to maintain in tow/haul

Just a shame they do not offer a long bed. Most people that would buy this truck are not camper trailer haulers but tent/dirtbike/atv campers and these 5 foot beds are just afterthoughts. A 6.5 foot bed is perfect because you can fit most atvs in the bed with the tailgate closed.

Dude utility trailers are like 10x better than bed-load. I did a bed load of my dirt bike ONCE - Now I use a light-weight utility trailer with motorcycle front-wheel chock and it's ridiculously better :D Honestly I don't get the hate for the 5ft beds when trailers are almost always better (just make sure you get a trailer with tires rated to interstate speed or change 'em out).
@jasonperry7970
@jasonperry7970 Жыл бұрын
@cputeq007 it is easier to load a utility trailer but the 5 foot beds are strictly a manufacturer convenience and bean counter decision. Not only is it cheaper to produce the truck itself with less steel but they can produce more trucks per hour because more can fit inside the building at any given time. This is why you get the same engine across models. It's cheaper. I went 2500hd crew cab gas 6.0 because I can put my 750 lb atv in the bed, tow a 7000 lb, 33 foot camper (with a 700 lb tongue weight) and still have almost 1500 lbs of payload left for people and other gear. As tfl has said for over a decade now, these small trucks are "lifestyle " trucks. I loved my king cab Frontier but it was not enough truck once kiddos and car seats come along. ( rear doors open backwards and require the main doors open, no go when small kids are involved)

I don’t understand the fuel economy issues with this engine just literally drove 2700 miles in mixed driving conditions. Both highway, city up and down Smokey mountains and the appellations. I averaged 24.3 mpg and 25.5 on highway driving. My truck is a 2022 Silverado crew cab 4x4. Yes the trip computer is accurate and within .2 mpg from my calculator. I’ve never got below 18 mpg.

Towing heavy with this little truck, I might go up a grade in oil viscosity. And add an transmission oil cooler, or a larger one if it already has one. Personally I'd rather get a base model half ton than this Colorado Trail Boss, I think even with the same engine it would have a higher rating and it would feel more stable towing the same weight.
