Welcome to Le French Crafter!
My name is James Berry and I make and restore leather products in my spare time, mostly bags, backpacks and small items like wallets and card-holders. I am still learning a ton every time I take on a new project and always appreciate feedback on my creations.
For the moment I don't take orders as I like to spend too many hours getting the finished product as good as I can : this means that if I were to sell these bags, the selling price would be way more than the bags are worth due to the hours of work involved.

I would love to credit the person on Facebook who inspired me to do this... Unfortunately the original post that inspired me to create this is lost to time (link I had bookmarked no longer works). The most recent reference I can find to this idea is from Richard Ness who posted in the Leather Work Patterns group on Facebook a picture of his stitching pony and the message: "I can’t remember where I stole the idea from, but here’s my take on the IKEA Kyrre three legged stool stitching clamp." Do let me know if you've made one of these in the past!

Thank you for the in-depth feedback! Indeed it may not be that much more just to go out and find an entry level stitching poney, but I was still curious to try this hack out and see if I could get it to work. Next time I would indeed recommend cutting the "jaws" part of the clap lower down on the leg, giving you a steeper angle to work with. I would also see about replacing the wheel quick release by something a bit better suited, maybe have it slightly lower down so the jaws can open more. Any how, I appreciate your insight into this project :)

I bought a Dreamworks Stitching Pony years ago. The problem I had with it is the way I stitch. My long threads get caught on the tension knob. I could not find a non-destructive fix to get those inside or out of the way. So, now I saddle stitch without a pony using the leap frog method. It ends up being faster for me and has no protruding knobs or screws to catch. This is an interesting possibility, the quick release bike lock.

Thank you for posting this video, i mad this yesterday and re stitched and old bowie sheath(first time saddle stitching) greetings from Norway, Alf (use long hinges, so the holes for the jav stem does not interfere with screw for latches

The only addition that I'd ask for is a spring on the quick release mechanism so that it will open automatically when not tensioned together. 👍

I'm not selling these but while you're making your own it would be easy enough to cut the standing leg to size, making it as tall as you want.

Hi James. This is great! It deserves to become widely watched, as it’s a brilliant design. Can you find a way to credit the original creator? I too built my first (and current) stitching pony from an Ikea stool, but it wasn’t quite so elegant! But it did include a stirrup for variable leg-tensioning instead of a spring-loaded clip. It’s great fun being creative isn’t it? Keep up the great work. I love your stuff.

Where do you get that quick release clamp ?

Any bike shop should have them. They will sell either a front or rear, the rest being longer. 100mm ~4" and 135mm ~5-3/8" Looking like that's a front, and why it's lower on the arms.
