I cannot wait for our local pet store gets in more mantids! My son raised a Chinese mantis afraid from the egg and he had a ghost mantis that sadly passed 2 molts away from adulthood and we don’t know why! His Chinese mantis, Sam, lived a year and laid an otheca.

Girl. Put your grow lights stuck along the inside middle part of the cabinet doors where they come together🙌🏼 do 2 or 3 going up and down. Everything will be getting good light but it won't be right up against everything plus you wont be able to see the actual light. It will look awesome in there. Use tape or sticky tab things to hide the light cords and keep them aligned around the edge of the doors out of the way.

Maybe a small fishbowl as a water reservoir in the bottom with a nylon rope wick (paracord might work if you have it on hand) one end jabbed into the moss wall and hanging into the water. The sphag should wick the rest of the way up to the top. My own (similar idea) setup uses a 20 gallon fish tank as a reservoir but I won't suggest a whole new, expensive, hobby to solve your problem lol 😂 (although I think you'd love fish keeping)

Get an inkbird humidity controller paired up with a reptile fogger. That's what I do for my ikea cabinet. It's all automated and I fill it like once a week with water. Turns on at 70% and under, and turns off at 80%, rinse and repeat.

@@ramzirais4988 Hi! I have nepenthes, pingucula, and drosera with moss/perlite soil in small pots. I put these in similar sized deep clear plastic drip trays to keep it filled with (only) RO water so that the plants are always water-logged. Then I pin miss to cover the pots. They love the bright light conditions and the moss helps to retain humidity up there :-)

These guys are so cute! Fun fact terrestrial isopods are detritivores meaning they break down decaying material and turn it into soil. Bugs are incredibly important! Be kind to bugs people and support your local bugs❤🪲 Ps. This includes centipedes, arachnids, and roaches too (I know a lot of people hate them but they are very important).

@erikm837210 ай бұрын
I’d say just get a less intense bulb for the cabinet! Lol. Or, maybe just to fill that space at the top, try some good old fashioned… Tradescantia zebrina, or any relative of that! I like it, idk if everyone does. It fills a space in no time, makes flowers and can likely handle that lighting you have. Or you could try some sort of succulent that is ok with more moisture? Of course there’s string of turtles, but I’ve always wanted to try string of pearls in a vertical or wall planting. They do make aerial roots after all… or when in doubt, just fill a space like that with creeping fig! Preferably the cute oak leaf ficus. That will definitely fill it up… Or Marcgravia, Pellionia, tons of different vining and shingling plants to choose from.

Yea you can totally buy an automated reptile mister, mine even connects to google home haha. Speaking of reptiles, in my greenhouse cabinet I have a crested gecko running around, if you enjoy the bugs maybe consider adopting a low maintenance gecko? Obviously do your research but crested geckos are awesome for this, they dont eat any of the plants and they eat fruit, super cute and loves to be held at night. But of course if you add any larger critters, like your mantis make sure the humidity is at safe levels. I added a small computer and it keeps the humidity at good levels, plus plants love air flow.
@AdahliaBiPunk11 ай бұрын
Harli, use rhipsalis or some other jungle cactus that can handle higher light! They love getting sprayed and high humidity but hate their roots staying constantly wet. Misting once a day would be fine for them. They'd love the light, be able to handle the drying of the moss, and they'd add fun texture!! Like honestly, a Sedum morganianum would do very nicely in there! :D

I see isopods I click. I'm a hobby isopod breeder so I have a shit ton of them but I still think I dont have enough haha. I love them so much and seeing other people get into them fills me with incredible joy!!! The are such underrated pets!!! Please also do make sure to have leaf litter in your terrarium cuz that's what they will eat most of the time and it keeps them from nibbling at our live plants. Plus they will hide underneath it and feel more safe!! (and it makes it look more naturalistic in my opinion) Also: Funfact: Isopods are crustaceans and breath through gills!!! even the fully terrestrial ones!! They need high humidit because of that and will die if the enclosure is too dry!!!

I love this cabinet!! I built my cabinet with some inspiration from your cabinet and added a waterfall. Posted a video on my KZfaq of mine. I would loveeee to add more bugs like isopods but I’m afraid since I have a water tank. I have released springtails to address mold. I appreciate the bug feed rituals you mentioned because I wouldn’t even know where to begin with that if I do decide to add more bugs to mine. I added lights on the sides because I didn’t think the one light on top was enough. I am having a dry patch on top too, but I think it’s from the fans I have up there. I have a misting system from reptizoo installed to keep up with the moisture and I love it. Grateful for your cabinet since it inspired mine and happy to see that it is doing so well and holding up thus far!

Hello Harli and thank you a lot for this video. I watched your terrarium-building video, which inspired me to build my own terrarium. I'm experiencing some humidity issues after completely sealing the terrarium with weather stripping. There's constant humidity and drops on the glass, making it difficult to see inside the cabinet.
