I would like to give credit for this idea to viewer "Conny Bjaaland" who wrote "I would like to see a comparison of burn when both are packed to there fullest capacity. I would also like to see how the ikea burns when placed inside the little bug. Does this configuration create a wood gas burn effect?"

You can cut through the lid of a 6" coffee can and slip the ikea cutlery holder inside you need to put two small tent pegs horizontally down below to stop the ikea from falling to the bottom. In the coffee can you make a few holes around the bottom and make a horizontal slit at the bottom to drag out the ash and there you have yourself a wood gas stove that also contains the ash'. Good day Mr Young... I'm a neighbor from QC. I liked your idea of the SS ruler so much, I got myself 5 and started working on them. Then I noticed something interesting... The rulers have great 90 degree spines... excellent to strike a rod and perfect for scraping bark or fat wood. So I'm making an all in one "Stove and fire kit"... Many thanks for continuous inspiration, your channel is an example of positive and creative thinking !!!

Hi Mark. Greetings from England! Thank you for this and your other Ikea stove videos. It inspired me to build my own. Looking at the principles of a rocket stove I then decided to have an added layer on the INSIDE. I did this taking the base off an old paint can, and then the remaining cylinder is held in place using bolts. The result is that air flows through the holes of the Ikea, but then gets blocked by the hot paint can, so is forced upwards until it meets the wood gas. And from my experience with it I believe I AM getting secondary combustion. And after some trial and error, I found I can use the bolts to rest an alcohol burner on, sitting inside the stove at the perfect height under my steel ruler pot stand! I'll make a video about it and post soon hopefully. But thanks again for your inspiring ideas and channel.

thanks for the shoutout mark - we'll probably bump into each other at the LC ;) The hybrid was a good experiment, it sorta looking like a firebox where the walls are more insulated and the air is forced up from the bottom or bottom side. Performance sue looked good and the ruler hack was a good one. You can't go wrong with a good piece of steel.

Mark, one of the advantages of the Ikea stove is that you can add more fuel to the fire without removing your pan. The added Lixada stove negates that advantage. Keep using your windscreen. You out did yourself on this video my friend. I'll be watching this video again to make sure I grasp all the good material you gave us today! Thanks.

I agree, side loading is one of the best things to build into the Ikea. I also find if I get a good full load and a top down burn I can get better than 20 minutes before I even have to add fuel. 17 minutes more than I need to boil 2 cups of water. Glad you liked the video David. Thanks for commenting

Good point. However, here's a nifty solution I just thought of. If you cut the riser cross bars such that the top of the lixada is always a bit higher than the bottom of them, and shorter so they're inside the lixada, you could slide the latter up with a suitable tool (like a spare stick) to get to the feeding ports, add wood, then drop it down again. This could also be used to raise the lixada up to particular levels, using the holes in the Ikea perhaps to lock it in place, giving a lot more whoosh of air in the base.

Very interesting, indeed. Perhaps if you found or made a wider IKEA stove that fit more snugly it would work. A ring to close the gap over the top would definitely help either way. You would have a nice, even distribution of fresh air and wood gas around the entire fuel mass, with most of it being burned near the bottom of the Ikea. But as the unit got hotter, the tower effect involved should help to even out the heat levels of all of the Ikea's holes. It's interesting to note that drilling more holes in the Lixada would even out the distribution of fresh air around the fuel mass and the extra oxygen should cause the gasified flame mass to expand upwards along the sides of the Ikea stove. I'm thinking about just obtaining two different sizes of Ikea stoves, then cutting them to the same height. With the flames spread out over Ike's entire wall, it might be harder to see the gasification unless looking at it closely from above. The flames may also still be fainter towards the top of the Ikea but they will definitely rise higher and the oxygen assisted tower stove effect will do the rest. Your idea is brilliant and with only a little more tweaking it should work extremely well. The gasifying hobo stove hybrid. Cheers

Interesting experiment. That more coals seemed to remain in the shielded stove might mean that the oxygen level in the chamber was lower such that there was less combustion surrounding the burning wood and more heat retention lower in the stove so that more of the gassifying wood turned into charcoal before combustion ... though perhaps the same amount of wood gas was consumed in the upper part of the stove. In any case, the wood gas ran out when the flame went out and more charcoal remained.

I have been using the metal rulers as crossbars for my IKEA hobo stove for a while. I actually got the idea to make them originally from your hobo stove video where you made them out of aluminum bars. Also, I use a piece of aluminum flashing as an ash plate under the hobo stove. I put this on a piece as a carbon felt and it works great. The felt adds almost no extra weight and it cut to the same size as the plate. Keep up the good work!

I had somehow missed this video. The idea was there but missed a funneling of the air into the burn chamber. A cone windshield would have worked unlike this one which just let warm air rise out of the outer walls. You could alternatively plug the top with a bit of rolled up aluminum foil, which would be easier in your case since you already have a good fitting outer wall. I think the alu foil would be unlikely to melt unless a coal fire were maintained for a while, since it would be on the outer wall of the burn chamber, and protected by the ikea stove’s steel. I’ll try to fashion a gasifier out of my strainer stove, as described above. and I’ll get back to you on if you so wish, Mark. Just let me know and I’ll comment back on here or make a video for you. I suspect an outer aluminum wall would suffice so I am going to try that as it’s likely easier for me to source than thin spring steel sheets.
@pedroclaro7822
@pedroclaro7822 8 ай бұрын
If nothing else, this showed that double walled stoves are inherently better in windy conditions, but the separate windscreen would be superior in that it would protect the stove AND the pot, hence directing heat toward the pot, making it more energy efficient and giving it a faster boil time.

Using my Walmart 9 hole high hobo stove (instead of Ikea 6 hole high) I inserted a 25 oz can INSIDE the hobo stove. Top and bottom cut out and 1/2” holes around the bottom circumference. Vertically packed with twigs and a top burn down, I was getting flames 2’ to 2 1/2’ high with little to no smoke. It appeared there was some gasification around the inside of the inner can. Only downside was it appears this is going to be a fuel hog. Thank you for the video for getting me inspired. .

As a chemist, I do not think the silicone pad will survive without degradation. A silicone pad generally starts degrading from 400 to 500 deg F, far below the heat of the coals. Woven ceramic pads used to protect wood from propane flames can stand up to 2500 deg F.

BBQ Skewers, Stainless Steel Tent Pegs, Welding Rods. You don't need to have a cross or X you can just cut suitable sized slots for any of the above to fit in an I I configuration across the top of your chosen IKEA/Walmart Utensil Strainer. However, if these configurations don't raise your Pot/Pan up off the top then, you may well need to drill a few additional holes at the top of your Utensil Strainer.

The Ikea stove seems to have way too many holes up its sides. The formula is more like “in the bottom of the burn chamber, up through it and out the top”. Pretty straight forward. Water runs down; fire goes up. With my Littlbug Junior, I dig a narrow trench about 2”-3” longer than the diameter. I place the stove astraddle the trench. Benefits include more air intake, longer sticks, more ash room, and handier bottom lighting option. Actually, some gasifier stoves would benefit from a bottom trench on mineral soils. Your ruler cross bar is a great idea. Metal is metal. I still might gi with the aluminum cross bar and use a bit less heat if I'm only boiling water. The cross bar for my rocket stove went adrift so I'll make another (1/8 x 1 inch steel bar). To cover your Ikea stove, a piece of heavy aluminum foil from Costco could work, held in place with a piece of rabbit wire or tuck the top edge over the stove lip. Less to pack.
