I love Jason but he won't make the top 7. but the selection was based on the performance over the season not on the US nationals alone. Still, Ilia would have been in the final group for the FS at the Olympics with this program and had a shot at bronze at least, if other skaters faltered. Vincent has a clear shot at a medal if he can control his nerves. I hope they get him a sports psychologist before the games.

He’s 1st alternate so the USFS is not risking it, rightfully so. The Olympics are just 2 weeks after so why bring him to another competition and risk him peaking too early and/or catching COVID? He needs to stay focused on the Olympics because quite frankly, he still has a shot as any of the 3 olympians could catch COVID between now and the actual Olympics (hopefully not but it’s a possibility). If we don’t see him at the Olympics, I hope he gets a shot at Worlds.

Skated cleaner, but Nathan had higher base value more difficult quad combos in the second half, and incredible consistency, Almost always getting small mistakes out of the way early in the season after peaking too soon in the last Olympic year, and a three time world champ (likely 4 time had 2020 not been cancelled-also sad for Kostornaia), so with his consistency and his international results undefeated since the Olympics until skate America thankfully leading to changed programs, his scores will be higher than Ilia’s due to the increased difficulty, base value and quality of his jumps, consistency and cool head in competition (unlike Vincent who is a disaster bound to happen again) and his combined international competition results, world standing and senior level PCS while Ilia has never competed senior until this Nationals, and while he won his jr Grand Prix events and qualified to the final, so did all the other three senior men (Nathan Vincent and Jason) which are some of the selection criteria looking at overall results over the last quad at major comps (which I think should leave Vincent off the team with his Nats performance and history mopping the ice with his butt and choking when it really counts, like not even qualifying the free skate at last year worlds, while,Jason has insane quality, top ten placements and best PCS and earned the third mens spot) and his components have thus far internationally been on par with juniors (though he is a gorgeous skater) partly because he had mistakes on the junior grand prix and little experience in main start competitions. I almost feel as though they should have sent him to senior Grand Prix and. Ha;ledgers so he could at least build a senior body of work and show how he handles major senior international competitions-because he learned quads over 2 Covid years and the quality of his skating and artistry would be made more sense for them to give him senior Grand Prix assignments to give him international experience and competitive portfolio and test his consistency and stability in major comps before nationals. The US is the worst at developing new talent. Had the assigned him senior grand prixs, then would have set him up nicely similar to Alina Zagitova in 2018 by ensuring she had challenger events, Japan Open, grand prixs with success qualifying her to the final where she won, euros where she won and finally the Olympics. Granted, she had won all jrgp’s and major junior titles the year prior whereas I believe this is ilia’s second competitive season as a junior competing, an until this year had minimal,success of one challenger series bronzeso he didn’t really have the successes of winning a title at jr GP, jrGPF and jr worlds until this season, finishing 16th at last junior worlds and no final, , but he won jrGP qualifier for the final this season, having learned three quads with five total, unfortunately making errors on both quads the first jrGP and one of the 2 in the second, but still good enough to win the jr gp’s and qualify to the final. The US just did not play their cards right with this kid and develop and utilize their young talent before their growth spurts or injuries due to intensity of training and physically taxing programs due to quads (and for Alina without quads due to her jumps getting bonuses in second half and her lutz loop in second half racking up the same points as a quad would give, and the difficulty level on par with difficulty of quads due to how insanely difficult and physically taxing that program was and how hard training and competing the way they do in practice and competitive. Wore out her knees). Ilia is still quite slender and growing a bit delayed, but his super slender body and weight, makes rotating his quads effortless right now, so why not maximize medal potential or high placement while they come easy to him because combined with his artistry and skating skills if he holds up under Olympic pressure as his literal first international senior competition, I think he has more potential to challenge for a spot with the best than inconsistent, under rotations and falling apart under pressure, non world free skate qualifying Vincent Zhou. I don’t think it should have been between Jason and Ilia, but Vincent and Ilia, with Ilia clearly the right choice, because Jason Brown finished top ten at World’s securing the third men’s spot, also being consistent and reliable with unrivaled quality of elements and artistry-like a master class in spins, foot work, flexibility, musicality, performance quality and dedication from start to finish even if he makes a mistake-his quality GOE’s allows him to compete with quads jumpers and he feels his performances and emotes into the top row. I believe he earned it over Vincent and Jason, and Jason should have placed above Vincent as well. He is known for choking when it counts and his free skate is empty and unmemorable without quads and clean skate while Ilia has youth, minimal competition range, but gorgeous technique, beautiful quads and air position, great artistry and skating skills and youthful attitude of having nothing to lose at this point-which is what I think helped Alina Zagitova at euros and Olympics-she wasn’t weighted down with heavy titles yet or intrusive, mean-spirited media meant to steal her joy and undercut her achievements, like she had at Worlds that year with everyone pandering to Zhenya and tearing a 15 year old to shreds. I don’t see that happening to Ilia,but I can see him adding a youthful optimism and gorgeous skating to an underperforming,in US team (aside from men and dance). That would be a perfect combination-Jason brings the master class skating and artistry PCS, Nathan brings the high scoring quad combos in the second half and one hell of a consistent amazing rotating position that typically works like a well oiled machine and the excitement and Ilia would be a happy medium between the two when Vincent seems almost guaranteed to choke and not enough to mask the woefully underperforming triple double ladies squad.

Meanwhile, we are more used to flashy and self promoting athletes. So some people even take Nathan's words at face value and immediately pronounce : XYZ is better than Nathan as even he himself admits it. No, Nathan is trying to be very traditional Chinese suave and not to antagonize anyone even at the expense of his own reputation. All those people saying Jason doesn't have quads, etc. First of all, isn't that a bit of a hypocrisy. For example, Anna Shcherbakova doesn't have quads, or a triple axel, has worse skating skills compared to Jason, but she is going to the Olympics. Second, Jason may not have quads, but he is consistent and he has a triple axel. Back then, Aliona Kostornaia had a triple axel and no quads but won against the quad jumping ladies and people were very supportive lol. Lastly, you are stupid if you say Jason has terrible skating skills. Do you even know how skating skills are judged by the panel? Jason has one of the best skating skills, is a complete package in terms of components, and is more technically consistent than Vincent would ever be. If the judges weren't a bunch of Americans, Jason would have outscored Vincent because Vincent kept falling and under rotating in the free while Jason had transitions and consistent fully rotated landings on his jumps. Also, they didn't call Vincent's underrotations, so yeah, Jason would have won and he earned his Olympic spot. Vincent's spot was handed to him no matter his inconsistencies.

He skated as a junior this season. He's going to be scored like a junior. They will not give him the inflated GOE or PCS scores yet. Fair or not you need the reputation to get those high scores and he doesn't have it, even if he lands all the quads perfectly which he has only ever done at nationals. The whole season internationally he has landed 2 quads total with positive GOE so...

He skated as a junior this year. You can look up the programs on youtube. He did well in junior, but the quads weren't very successful and scores would not be enough in senior competition. His only senior international competition did not go well. If you watch the other competitions, you'll see why he was not picked. I'm looking forward to watching him in the future.

He does his jump trainings under Nathan's coach Rafael Arutyunyan. My understanding is that Raf tried to make a case for him but the committee has clear criteria that Jason was able to meet more than he did

Nationals is not Olympic Trials. The winners made it to the worlds team.

This event was to pick a champion in each discipline and it fulfilled that. Nobody ever called it the Olympic trials except the ignorant.

@@quietbirde1977 what happened was that he he finished 11th in the free skate (finished 9th overall after being In 4th after the short program), fell HARD on a quad sachow (underrotated), Rey bad quad toe (very underrotated and was a repeated element because it was supposed to be part of a combo), and did a poor triple lutz. His performance at 2022 nationals was the outlier for his 2021/2022 season. He has massive amounts of talent (I have no doubt he can win world and Olympic titles/medals), but he hasn’t shown the consistency just yet. So no, he in all likelihood would not have done better than Brown. Malinin’s potential high is MUCH higher than brown, but his low is also MUCH lower.

I agree with most of your points, but I do think the ISU has demonstrated they will give Nathan a gold medal against Hanyu even if he doesn't skate cleanly. I think the ISU is caught up in Nathan's "masculine" skating and how transformative it could be for the sport and bringing in new audiences. The sport has been a dichotomy for years: we want artistry balanced with great athleticism but we also want it to be masculine, but not too masculine like Elvis but not too artistic (ie feminine) like Johnny Weir. Apparently, they think this will bring in more men to the sport and bring a bigger audience. Frankly, the sport would be better served trying to market itself to communities of color if it wants a bigger audience. but I digress. I do agree Ilia is too much of a wildcard. It was like Michelle in 94, should she have skated instead of Nancy or Tonya? Unlikely. She was too inexperienced at that point, no matter how well she skated at Nationals. And again, the body of work over the season is what judges are looking at, which was quite clear to everyone going into Nationals. Can anyone point to where a junior skater was placed on the US Olympic team without senior experience? There could be cases, but none come to mind for me. Still, that being said, I do think if Ilia was sent and skated as well as he did, he has an outside chance at a medal, likely no more than bronze depending on how Kolyada, Chen, Hanyu, Yuma, Shoma and even Jin Boyang skate and Kevin Aymoz. Judges would likely score even Keegan over Ilia if the former skates somewhat cleanly at the games. Vincent is a wildcard too. He could walk away with gold, or he could not qualify for the long program at all. But he’s proven himself with a world bronze and a win at Skate America, so judges will be looking at him as a contender. And if he skates cleanly, he’s definitely in the mix. As for Jason, I would provide an analogy of Adam Rippon in 2018. Adam had the best spins at the Olympics period (male or female) and in my opinion the best artistic program (his long) of the men's event. Frankly, he became the breakout star of the entire event transcending the sport or even the Olympics itself, for that moment of time. Still, he finished no higher than 10th. I do believe Jason will finish higher but it's unlikely he's in the running for a medal unless the top contenders pretty much have a meltdown.

Hi Charlie thanks for your intelligent reply, it’s true the sport is changing in a way that’s more dynamic for men but could be very unhealthy in the least for women. Mariah winning Nationals as the oldest woman in 95 years is also an incredibly healthy message about the sport, which used to be female dominated and driven in interest but still with extremely high ratings and public interest.

@@Salmiyaguy1...if Nathan doesn't skate cleanly and still beats a clean Yuzuru, it would have had to be because of his enormous TES. As pointed out, Nathan is the most gifted technical skater the world has ever seen. If I recall, the base value of Yuzuru's program at JNats was in the 80's. Nathan's at USNats was over 100. Therefore, Nathan will always have a little more room for error and could still win.

Apple and orange. Ilia is so much younger to have been judged on his 'body' of work. It's like the stock market. Just because a company is performing well in the past years doesn't mean it will do so this year. Ilia is the new company with a product that will transform the industry--quads. Jason's offering is beautiful but will not bring in the returns as much as Illa's. You're judging Ilia when he's just emerging and on his way up. Jason's hit a plateau if not on the way down.

@@pedropelaez That may well have been the case in the past when we had the 6.0 system but with today's marking system where each element has a base score and the grades of execution marks are given - plus or minus - it is more of a level playing field between national and international competitions. You cannot deny that Malinin's error-free performance at U.S nationals with four clean quads with high G.O.Es would not have scored well at Olympics.

Their scores from 2022 Nationals was 91.94 and 135.43 for the rhythm and free dance respectively. They skated much better at both the Olympics and Worlds and the highest scores are either we’re 87.51 and 130.63. I can point even more skaters with overscored national scores compared to their best scores at international events. So please tell me again that scores from national competitions aren’t overscored and are a good barometer of how they will score at Olympic and worlds. There is a reason why the ISU doesn’t recognize those scores when it comes to records or personal bests.

@@pennyinheaven regarding the disparity between american and japanese judging, i think that might be a bit tied to mentality - e.g. the americans tend to value encouragement and rewards whereas it's probably different in japan (more emphasis on continuous improvement & less rewarding, i'm assuming). as for russian nationals, i think it depends more on the skaters the federation wants to promote (e.g. the ones that have been in senior for a while as opposed to the juniors that just moved up).

Her "composition" scores SUCKED under today's scoring. Michelle was the superior skater.

How was Nathan overscored? His pts came from the difficulty of his quads, rightfully so. He was properly deducted in PCS for his mistakes and also given a 2 pt deduction. If he had skated flawlessly, this program would have scored him over 230 pts...and because of his errors, he only got 212.

Because the US needs a champion in each discipline, and this event accomplishes that. While the nationals have some bearing on who gets selected for the Olympics, they don't refer to it as 'trials for the Olympics' precisely because selection for the Olympics(outside of the championship winners) is actually determined by a committee who looks at each Skater's entire body of work. They want skaters who are consistent and it is to prevent a skater from going to the Olympics just because they happened to get lucky and skate better that day. If Ilia had a better body of work, he would have been chosen over Jason. However, his scores outside of his performances at Nats have been quite low, and even though his future looks promising and his ceiling high, what he has done so far is inconsistent.

According to the statistics I just looked up, there are only 2 skaters in history who have scored higher that Ilia in the combined total, and that is Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen. I think when you have an American with the third highest score in history, all of these are dumb ass excuses not to send him.

There would be bigger issues if the US figure skating fed ignored the rules/criteria they themselves set and went rogue on this kind of a decision. How fair would that be to the athletes? They could consider changing up the rules for the next Olympic cycle but they cannot simply ignore their own rules at this point.

@@shalom968 International scores are not the same as national scores. National scores are inflated for everyone. Ilia wouldn't score close to this in international competition. Maybe go watch his other competitions this year, see how he skated and what he scored and you'll see why they didn't put him on the team. He is a very talented junior. I am looking forward to seeing him in the future.

if I were choosing between vincent underrotates zhou, 25th at worlds 2021, and jason brown, 2nd in the world according to isu world rankings, I would choose jason brown. team shouldve been nathan, ilia, and jason, end of story

the HUGE difference was in 1992 Paul Wylie did the top technical element at that time..the Triple axel...Jason is NOT remotely doing the top technical elements that will decide the winner and medalists...Jason represents the past..this was his last nationals..His career is ending.. Ilia is the future....Nathan was 18 in 2018 and Vincent 17 ..the age is meaningless...its the technical ability that counts...Noone wins with high GOE its the TCS that determines the winner
