Rob Cross's throw against King was not an Illegal throw. Your foot does not have to be touching the Oche, you merely have to be behind the Oche line.

Wait a moment, why is Robb Cross being criticised for stepping far to the side of the oche? It’s a completely legitimate strategy in darts to move as far as you like as long as your foot isn’t in FRONT of the oche line! Phil Taylor did the same thing to win the World Matchplay with a 132 finish and it was hailed as the best dart ever thrown… also the oche being curved would make sense but I can see why they don’t do this as it would look a bit odd on the stage.

i've played darts for many years and never knew an underarm throw was illegal, i thought the only illegal throw was if you are in front of the oche, and in the 1000's of pub league matches ive played in you see guys toe's over the line on the mat all the time without being pulled up lol, as well as chucking one underarm to make sure they bust back to a double. you live n learn :)

Normal dart rules allow the underarm throw, as there are dart players who do throw underarm, PDC do have some odd rules

You are allowed to move past the oche. You need to extend the oche in your mind and stay behind it. It is not clear to see if cross was a bit to far towards the board

Imagine being the writer in a local tournament only consisting of amateur players calling a game of two amateur opponents, one of them throwing underhand at some point. I wouldn't even dare to deny that throw. People would complain to me that I take it way too serious so I'd let it go, even though I knew it was against the rules.

If there is a distance from the centre of the bull to the oche, 2.93 metres. That tells me that an arc can be formed on the ground to create an oche.

There isn't no rule on having your foot against the oche when throwing - agreed Cross may of been in front of the oche - but you've got to remember, him throwing from that angle will probably mean he's throwing from further away.... Rules of Trigonometry

not only did he hit single 7, he wasn't aiming for D16 - he was hoping to bust after hitting single 11. so whilst the score should have indeed been 18 (therefore bust), he was only given the 11, which left him with 5...

For sure it's harder to be accurate as you're not throwing in front of your eye line. There's no technical or in game advantage to be gained. The only reason i can think of is that it looks unprofessional and makes fun of the game by making it look silly on TV.

Its just an odd rule from the PDC, there are loads of underarm throw dart players, pubs rules say throw, PDC says to aim

I think it's a savety issue. If you release your dart too late in a normal throw, you hit the ground. But if you release it too late with an underarm throw, you may hit one of the referees. It may seem very unlikely to miss a throw like that, but considering that it was an unaimed throw out of frustration, the risk was too high. Taking that risk is very disrespectful to the referees, even if it's very low.

Most likely to enforce strict discipline because a dart is technically a weapon. You have to draw the line *before* throwing the dart into the ceiling or the referee.

It leaves me with the question why is underarm illegal? I would expect it to be less accurate anyway therefore no advantage to throwing that way🤷‍♂️.

Good video.. but the many "ZOOM" transitions makes this very hard to watch... a simple dissolve will get you to the next scene without detracting from your video or the annoying the viewer... the human eye does not "ZOOM" during transitions.... Just my two cents..

Cross and King.................................... rather see them throw darts at each other to be honest. Not nice people. As for King.................. I recall a game he played in the BDo where he was getting slammed by an unseeded player and he demanded the oche was remeasured. He refused to play non and instead of the BDO making him forfeit the match, they suspended play and remeasured. The disruption lead to the unseeded player getting nervous and King winning. He was booed consistently at BDO matches for the rest of the season and left to go to the PDC. So as for alleged cheating, King is not a victim he is a culprit.

Ok, so I carried on watching....you on the one hand say Cross' throw was illegal because he was no longer touching the raised oche (which you don't have to do) then you say it was because he was ahead of the oche (which is not allowed) ....that's what Mervyn was saying. You don't have to touch the oche. You can be as far left or right of the board (ignore the raised oche) as long as you are behind the oche line which you have to mentally visualise when you go off to the left or right (it just makes it harder as the more angle you create the further you have to throw the dart). You can stand 100m right or left of the board if you want just as long as you are standing behind a line that is seven feet nine and a quarter inches (237cm / 2.37m) from the board. And, Mervyn King has never won the world championship (BDO or PDC) And, the raised oche is only a thing because if it was flat and just a piece of tape denoting the line, the markers would have to be watching the position of the leading foot of the thrower. Its a raised oche for convenience and fairness. You don't have to be touching it. And, fyi, the different coloured carpeted area around the oche is the exclusion zone that the player collecting their darts can't enter when the opponent is setting up to throw.

I guess it is dangerous for the markers and caller as the player has less control over the dart when throwing under arm, thus it is forbidden

The cross one is negligible. If you're that far over from the oche. The board is much farther from you than if you just stood at the raised platform. Also from the video it looks like he was basically in line with it. More whinging from a member of Taylor's pocket club Mervin King.
