Sounds like the Lawrence police wouldn’t tell the school anything, and no charges were brought until a few days ago. What the hell do you expect the university to do with basically no information other than an incident might have maybe allegedly occurred? The moment charges were filed, they told him to turn himself in and suspended him.

@@colejames423 That's not LPD's job. As director of the DIA, it was Josh Whitman's job to monitor Shannon's status once Whitman knew Shannon was being investigated for a sex crime in late September. Whitman should have known by 12/5/2023 (when the criminal complaint was filed, and the allegations were substantiated), as several reporters implied at Whitman's 12/29 PC. I expected Whitman to do his job. He was late, because he purposely didn't communicate directly with authorities in Kansas. But ultimately, Whitman did his job on 12/28/2023, when he suspended Shannon. For that, I give Whitman and the University credit.

The charge - I saw that - that was the saddest fan moment of my life - I thought there was no way he'd be coming back. Comes back. We win the BTT. The BTT record for most points in a game was 35, TSJ AVERAGED 34. The BTT record for most points scored in a tournament was Keegan Murray in 4 games. TSJ finished 1 point behind. Scored so many points playing just 3 games. Only had 3 games since Feb. 4th not scoring 20+ points. Finished 3rd in the nation in scoring. We get to the E8 - finally the curse is broken. Averaged 28 in the first 3 March Madness games. Averaged 30 in the 7 game win streak since the Purdue game up until the UConn game in the E8. Now think about all that. That was a RIDE. LEGEND!!!!!

Seems super solid to me. Hard working for real. Goal oriented. Disciplined for real. Strong leadership. The team seems connected. Culturally strong. Team mates seem to trust him, even like him from watching games. Anxious to learn more about him and the allegations. Certainly a sad situation. Praying for all involved. I pray Terrence Shannon Jr. can get through this. I want him to focus on his studies and training. I want him to do the best he can to understand and assist his lawyers to advance his legal arguments. He can absolutely get through this. He must hang in there over the next week or two, when critical steps will occur in his criminal case in Kansas and his federal case in Illinois. When the right time comes (he and his lawyers will know when), I expect him to simplify his situation and take steps to move past his troubles. This might involve a plea agreement. If TSJ can't play basketball for the University of Illinois, he should still continue to train and prepare for when his criminal case is resolved. Personally, I hope that change can occur in March of this year, if not before. So, by June, things could be a lot different regarding his future. His lawyers can help him with that. His family can support him. Many fans will support him too. With all that in mind, I don't worry. I think TSJ can be okay.

University was not aware that it was for rape nor were they provided any evidence or information at all other than that he was under investigation. They'd be essentially suspending him blindly. People like you need to stop make comments on things you don't understand.

It sounds like the school wasn’t aware of how serious the allegations were, and they weren’t given any info by the PD in Lawrence when they reached out. Not really sure what you expect the university to do with that total lack of information. You think they should just suspend him on the basis of … pretty much nothing? In any case, allegations are allegations. Hopefully over time, we’ll get more details on the whole incident and everyone’s response to it. It’s too early to be judging anything at this point.

@@poopoomangione Actually, regarding Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) policy, a criminal charge is one form of a substantiated allegation. If it is a felony criminal charge, then it is a major offense according to DIA policy, and, while it isn't yet resolved, it can result in a suspension of a student athlete from team activities. This is exactly TSJ's situation right now regarding the University of Illinois DIA. So, related to your post, Kansas DA Jennifer Tatum charged Shannon with felony rape and sexual battery on 12/5, AD Witman suspended Shannon on 12/28 based on those criminal charges (which count as substantiated allegations of major offenses), the DIA 3-person panel upheld Shannon's suspension and made his suspension indefinite (so until his criminal case is resolved).

Not quite so simple Michael. The University of Illinois DIA must have a "substantiated allegation" according to DIA policy, not just info that a student athlete is being interviewed or investigated by police, as Shannon was by the LPD back in September. So, it wasn't until 12/05/2023, that a strong form of that substantiated allegation existed, namely the filed criminal complaint. Finally, the DIA had to possess that document. AD Josh Witman should have known out it by communicating directly with the relevant authorities in Kansas on a regular basis. Whitman said he didn't, which was unfortunate, since this was arguably his responsibility. Yet, when the Kansas court later issued a warrant for Shannon's arrest on 12/27, Whitman finally obtained a copy of the criminal complaint from social media, and suspended Shannon on 12/28. So, IMO, Shannon should have been suspended on or just after 12/5, as several reporters implied in the Q&A at the end of Whitman's 12/29 press conference.
