In this video we review and a Illinois 16 size 23 jewel 60 hour Bunn Special Type IIE. The 23 jewel 16 size 60 Hour Bunn Special is a rather common pocket watch. Love this video. I have the 163A model with a Montgomery Dial and very fancy case pictured in their advertisements circa 1932. It has it's original box and instruction card. It was an expensive auction years ago on.Ebay, but I would not be denied. It is my favorite pocketwatch, and I only have three pieces. Your commentary is exactly how I feel when the Sangamo boys get all sweaty. The ELINVAR Hamilton/Illinois co-creators make this one cooler IMHO.

Yes I agree! The addition with the Hamilton technology of the day really sets the Bunn Specials apart from the Sangamos.

I’m trying to dig into the hobby, where does one find a reputable pocket watch repair shop? What key words should I google in my area?

From what I have found throughout my travels, this is a dying art. If you can't find anything with watch repair, then chances are you don't have anything close. Best you can do is send out to watchmakers for repair work.

I have an Illinois Bunn Special 21 Jewel 60 hour that needs a servicing. it seems quite different than yours in that it has a snap on rear cover under the screw on rear cover, and the decoration on the case is not like any others i can find. wanna talk?

You can email me, we can talk. The cases are sometimes all different. Many people did have to recase them after the gold fill wore out it their original Bunn Special cases.

i have seen a 161 with elinvar in the same position is this possible

Yes it is possible, there is the the 161 type 2e that is more common somewhere between 3200 and 3500 were made. The the very rare 161 type 1e which made no more than 50 of

Great video! Found it when I was looking up videos to learn about a pocket watch past down to me from my great grandfather. Its a Bunn special model #173. Im a watch lover & have had this for years but never taken the time to get to know it. So now I am pulling it out to spend some time with it. It winds and runs great. but I cant seem to set the time. Any advice?

You need to unscrew the front bezel. Around the 2 o'clock position there will be a little tab, you need to pull out the lever and then set the time with the crown. After you set the time you need to put the lever back and put the bezel back on. Glad you enjoyed the video.

The guys on my site clearly were very surprised and welcomed the information...I will take a look at the other vids as well. @@The1951skylark I will post videos of the projects I am currently working on. Right now I am a little heavy with pocket watches. Some I am working on for customer, others are mine to service and sell, then others are for review. I have different playlist and hopefully that will give you a feel of the direction I am going. What is even harder than working on smaller items, is filming it!! Then editing it, I am not great. Hopefully I will become better. However, my 7th video is way better than my first 2 dumpster fire videos!! Let the guys know, if they have any questions to feel free to ask me in the comments of a video and I will do my best to answer or make a video.

Just wondering if you can help me out. I recently acquired a 163 identical to yours shown in the video. My dilemma is trying to find the balance jewels for the watch. The lower jewel is cracked making the watch run about a minute or two fast in a 24 hour period and unable to adjust. The jewels on this watch were oversized and unable to locate. Could the be Hamilton jewels?

They usually have 2 or 3 different options with lower jewels. The difference always being the pivot size of the hole, 10, 11 or 12 are the usual size. However, every time I have ever replaced a balance staff on a bunn special 163 I usually had to polish the pivot to make it fit right. I hope this answered your question .

*No they were not. In the 1820's to 1860's it was the English 3/4 Plate Pocket watch which was the best. By the 1880's the Swiss surpassed both the American railroad pocket watch and the top English repeater watches. Patek-Philippe's ascendancy to the top position was already established by this point.*
