Confused about how Illustrator calculates resolution? Unsure how file dimensions and resolution work in Illustrator? It's confusing and practically no one ever tells you what's going on. But I will!
I'll explain how Illustrator calculates resolution - so, if you create a file that is 3600 px x 3600 px in size I'll tell you why, when you export it as a 300 dpi image, its size balloons to 15000 x 15000 px in size. Seriously!
It will all make sense when you know what 'rules' Illustrator is playing by. When you know how Illustrator makes these calculations you can learn how to make the calculations yourself so you know how big a starting size image you need to make to get the output you want.
I explain this in detail so you understand exactly what values to put into your calculator to be able to export the Illustrator document as a jpg or png file at the exact dimensions and exact resolution that you want it to be.

Do they know how much most designers hate maths?!! why can't it just be like Photoshop? Put in your size, export, get your damned size! Like WTF!! Anyway thank you. SGG it's tricky isn't it? I will let you know if anything changes, I just don't expect it will. This is a pretty fundamental aspect of Illustrator. I'd just have been happy if they'd had come out and said it - took me forever to work this out and I still haven't seen anyone else cover it as an issue.

This is the most helpful video ever!! I’ve been trying to figure out how to create a pattern for wallpaper, and the pixel requirement from the printer is that it needs to be 7200x7200 pixels, which is then printed on a 24 inch square. It was not making sense why Illustrator was giving me so many resolution errors! Now I get it. THANK YOU!! 🙏🏻

Read ppi and dpi as meaning/being the same thing. They are not - but for your purposes treat them exactly the same and all will work as expected.

Hi, Helen! Thank you for this video. It works for me, but no matter what I try it increases the size by just 1 pixel. so 2801 X 2305 instead of 2800 x 2304. I ensured my X,Y settings on the artboard are whole numbers, not decimal and played with some of the settings in both the artboard and the save dialog that pops up with the 'File - Export As' setting and still can''t get it. I should mention I resized my artboard to 672 x 553 per your calculation and fit my artwork to it. I hope I can go ahead and post my file with the one pixel off hoping it won't cause print problems for the buyer? It's driving me bonkers! Any thoughts?

Linda, you will need to be careful about selling something that isn't the exact right size. This worries me a bit. If you have Photoshop, you might want to open the file in Photoshop and check out the edges. My concern is that there will be a row or column on one or two sides of the image which contain lighter pixels and this will be visible in the final design most particularly if you are selling these as seamless repeating patterns. I would be doing a bit of investigation here if I were you. Feel free to ask if you have other questions.

If I was asked to create a label by a client with dimensions 1000px * 1000px at 300ppi in png form should I choose the artboard size as the calculated value from the above equation or 1000px * 1000px for fulfilling the client requirement?

Set the original file size to 240 x 240 and save as 300 ppi and it should be fine. I just tested it and it worked for me.

What resolution do you want the final image to be? Unless you can answer that question - no one can help you.

Hi Helen thanks for sharing this brilliant formula. Anyway what if my dimension is like this - linkedin cover page (1128) 270.72 x (191) 45.84. Do I have to round them off? If so I did not get the exact numbers.

With a LinkedIn cover which won't be printed, I would just make a document 1128 x 191 in size and save it using File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy) and it will be the perfect size. The size issue/problem/file size blowout/throw your computer out the window stuff typically occurs when people are preparing documents for printing. Just take the simple route for your project.

Hi Helen A Pod site requests for mugs to have a file size of 208mm by 100mm which is according to them 6240 by 3000 px at 300dpi. When I create a file size of 208mm by 100mm it won’t upload says it’s too small. When I create a file size of 6240 by 3000 px at 300 using your formula. The file size in cm 52.83cm by 25.4cm which is way bigger than the 20.8cm by 10cm required. If I don’t use your formula and create a file of 6240 by 3000, the final size in cm is over 200cm . I don’t understand why using the formula hasn’t made the final size 208 by 100mm. It’s reduced it from over 200cm to 52cm but it’s still the wrong size. I still need to apply this concept to larger items like blankets. Concerned at the size of the files and clarity. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I tried doing the calucations to match my 300 dpi export but when I expanded the image, the quality decreases. Is it only pixelating because i'm expanding a file size that is supposed to be left with smaller dimensions?

It is best to look at a design at 100% size to determine if it is pixelated or not. If you enlarge any design eventually it will look pixelated but it probably won't print that way. So check it out at 100% size and see how it looks.

You will need to know what size document you want to output - that's the first step. Then apply the formulas shown in this video - they still work in Illustrator 2022 just fine. Perhaps go back and step through the examples that I show in the video to understand how it functions.

Thank you for this tip mam. But there's an issue that if we want to export the same file as pdf for printing purpose also. Then pdf will be like 864 by 864. So what's the solution for that? It works to export jpg but it will not work if we want to export pdf also of the same size 3600 by 3600. Looking for your response. Thanks :)

Hi there, if you need to have a PDF at 3600 x 3600 that is essentially a 12 x 12 inch document at 300 ppi. So, create a 21 x 12 inch document in Illustrator. To save the PDF choose File - Save As and select Adobe PDF(*.PDF) from the Save as Type list, choose your location and click Save. Then, when the Save Adobe PDF dialog opens, from the Adobe PDF Preset menu choose [High Quality Print] then continue and save as usual. You should be good to go with a 3600 x 3600 px pdf.

Great question Susan. There are no other issues with the inflated files. The biggest concern is when people want to send out a file at a specific number of pixels wide and tall and at a specific resolution and they don’t get what they want. That’s the problem.

Hmmm..how to put this.... Susan, if you look at most people's offerings for, say, scrapbook paper they will say - 10 sheets of 12 x 12in paper at 3600 x 3600 px, 300 dpi. That is the market's expectation. However, if you were to tell your purchasers that you're giving them that (10 sheets of 12 x 12in paper at 3600 x 3600 px, 300 dpi) but if you deliver something different then I, as a buyer, am thinking you don't know what you are doing and you are making things difficult for me if you give me something different to what 99.9% of other sellers out there provide. If you sell to me on Etsy, you just potentially got a one star review from me and some disparaging comments - your designs might be great but your files aren't the standard size. Also, if you give me something that is 15,000 x 15,000 px in size you are wasting my bandwidth when I download it and I'll have to juggle my printer settings to get this 30 x 30in document to print onto 12 x 12 in paper. Basically my trust in you as a seller is diminished. Now, what I am doing in this video is giving you a method for ensuring that you give to your customers what they expect. Nothing more and nothing less. It's about customer service, meeting the expectations of your audience, and being seen to be professional and knowledgeable about what you are selling. If you don't care about this, then ignore the video, it's fine. If you do care, then this video will help you provide your customers with a correct size document. You just need to do your research for your market to determine what 99% of people sell and what 99% of buyers are expecting to buy and give them that.

@@HelenBradley Helen, this is so good, and good of you to take all that time to reply so clearly - I get it now, I don't plan to sell downloadables to customers, for example, but I plan to be sending files to others as part of my work, and of course it will be crucial to send them what they're expecting. Hi Helen, I have a very similar issue. I started my artwork in procreate, then used image trace. I’m working with illustrator CS6. Following the instructions for saving my file, I clicked “save for web”, then Png-24 and after I saved it, I got a pixelated image. Do you know what the reason could be? I’ll be grateful if you could shoot any suggestion. BTW, I followed your link and subscribed to take your skillshare classes. Thanks so much!

Hi Ana. I am so happy to hear that you subscribed to Skillshare, I hope you really enjoy it. Now, as to your problem, PNG-24 is a good format but, in the Save for Web dialog how big is your document? I think that might be the problem. You should always proof your art at 100% size - anything is going to look pixelated at higher resolutions. Have you printed anything? It might be worthwhile checking a sample print to see how that looks pixelization-wise. First stop is the final image size - that might indicate your problem.

Thanks so much for your response! In the “save for web” dialog box it is set at 100% 163.5 kb. I’ve also tried lowering the percentage, but I still get a pixelated image 😩

Ana, the 100% & 163.5 kb values aren’t the size of the image that matter so much as the 500 x 500px. This is the problem - most screens are 1920 x 1080 px so your document dimensions are tiny - no wonder it looks pixelated. Go back to Illustrator and save it again - this time size it to around 2000 x 2000 and look at it again. A 500 x 500px image at 150 dpi for printing will print ok at around 3 inches square - at a more typical 300 dpi it’s going to print at 1.5 inches square so, again, it’s very small.

I followed all the steps in AI 2019 CC on Mac and when I open in Preview and check the DPI it still says 72 DPI.

Hi,i am facing a strange issue in illustrator my vector logo is not clear. Even when i export png and jpeg in 300 ppi . Old files of ai are clear, but new ones are not clear even i try to reinstall ai.

That is seriously strange. Have you checked your settings in illustrator? Things such as the raster resolution might impact your output if your image uses raster effects.
