Illustrator - Make Cones with 3D effects
Learn how to make cones in Illustrator using an easy to use 3D effect. I'll show you how to make the shape and how to use the 3D settings quickly and easily. I will also show how to apply stripes to your 3D cone shapes by mapping a symbol to a 3D shape.

Peter, just be aware that the old 3D tools which are discussed in this video are still available even in the new versions of illustrator. They’re just not available through the Windows menu. I like this video and found that if I want to map art to a cone, it would be less complicated to use the pen tool. I also learned about the expanding the cone and deleting the layers I don't see.

You’re on track here Susan. Quite often it helps to be able to clean up the 3D expanded objects just so you know exactly what you can work with and what’s hidden anyway.

Love your tutorials. You actually can rotate the cone without expanding it. I figured there must be a way, so I took it as a challenge to find out how. Instead of just selecting the cone and rotating it, you need to do a transformation effect on the cone and rotate it there (I started from the appearance panel). If you rotate, scale (hor & vert), move (both hor & vert) and make a number of copies all in the same transformation effect window, you can get a cool spiral effect. I was also able to make a symbol without expanding that effect first. Positioning that mapped symbol is a bit different and may take some getting used to, but it may work better in some instances. I like to keep everything as editable as possible, so I try to avoid expanding effects whenever I can, at least until the very end of the project. It was helpful to see how you methodically broke apart the expanded cone and removed all the unnecessary parts. Even when I already know how to do a technique that you're presenting, I still find your tutorials very helpful - you always include some tip or trick that I never knew about (of course then I feel foolish that I've been doing things the hard way all this time). Keep up the great work! :)

Amy you sound like you've really got a good handle on illustrator. Well done too for looking at videos even if you think you know how to do something. You'll always have a really good chance of learning something that you didn't know. It's exactly how I learn - I look at lots of KZfaq videos that are created by other teachers. Sometimes what I learn has nothing to do with the actual thing that the video is about but I'll see them tackle a task in a different way to the way I would do and it might lead me down the track to a different solution for a different problem in future. You sound like you've got a really good handle on how to learn the inns and outs of Illustrator. Thanks for your comment and I'm going to have a look at they transform tool with these cones just to see how it all pans out. Cheers - Helen

Anchor points on slanted side of triangles govern number of surfaces we get on cone. If there are three anchor points ( two at ends and one in middle ) then we will get two surfaces as a result.

Is there a way to remove the cone after applying the stripes to gain a conical spiral?

Great question. You need to select the shape, expand it, and then open up the Layers panel. Poke around inside the shape here - it is made up of lots and lots of objects. Turn the visibility of bits on and off and you will be able to find the portion which is the spiral shape. It will take a few minutes and it's a really interesting exercise. Once you have the bit/bits you want, you can copy them to use them - perhaps to a new document. Let me know how you go?
