Illustrator - Shapes and Halftone - How to make a half tone with any shape
Learn how to make custom vector halftone effects in Illustrator using any shape (instead of dots) that you want to use. This video shows how to get around the limitations in Illustrator that mean halftones are all dots and use any shape you want to use. We will use a script to do this and I'll show you where to find it and how to download, install and use it in Illustrator.

This is GENIUS! Another useful use for the script is to replace the traced halftone dots with more perfect circles. Thank you so much for this!

@@HelenBradley Hi there, I'm trying to do it with a rectangle and when I've gone through the steps and ready to run the script it doesn't replace each shape. It will replace with only 1. Does this only work with a circular gradient?

Quick question, When I run the script replacing the shapes with a hexagon for example, it replaces them just fine, but it stretches them in odd ways. How do I run the script to scale the pieces with the height and width proportions constrained?

You probably can if you fill each shape in the image with a gradient and then do the script thing. It might be worth looking at with a simple image to begin with?

Hi, thanks a lot for the tutorial. Sadly my Illustrator alters the reference shape when it replaces the elements. They do not look exactly the same which is really bothering my design. Someone made similar experiences and solved the problem? Thanks

Hi Helen! Each time I try to save the script it shows as failed in my downloads status. I tried as "all files" as well with the same result. Any advice?

Hi Helen, thank you for sharing this hack. Although, I have some problem when it comes to select the script. Even though I've changed the extension with .jsx, it seems I cannot select the file. I've put it in the folder as in the description, I can see it but is not "selectable". What might I have done wrong? (I am using Mac) Thanks :)

That’s a bit strange. I’ve tested the script running out of the downloads folder and it works just fine. I need to test it in the correct location and see how it goes there. I haven’t had a chance yet. I’ll let you know when I know.

@@HelenBradley Hi Helen, thank for investigating. I eventually found the issue and when it comes to saving the script I had to select "All files format" instead of "text file". After that, everything worked just fine. Thank you so much for sharing this great tutorial.

Ok, a couple of things. Restart your computer by turning off the power so you clear out everything. Then close any programs you don't need to have open. Then try again. Taking the load off your computer might help. If not, try a smaller size object to see if that works. You need to determine if it is the script or how you are using it that is at fault or your computer is just struggling. This will help you troubleshoot.

ai doesnt see it as a compatible file when attempting to run the script -- is there any solve for this?

I am so sorry to hear this. And it's very strange too. I just redid the entire process - watched the video and did everything as I suggested and it worked just fine. If I was to guess I think the problem is in the saving of the script file so I've done it for you and put it here for you to download: www.dropbox.com/s/oqzac77e3mgmmyq/findAndReplaceGraphic_transformToFit.zip?dl=0 The jsx file is in a zip file - you don't have to sign up for dropbox so don't be fooled into thinking you do! I put it in a zip file because it might cause issues for you otherwise. This is the exact same file I used to test the process in my version of Illustrator on the PC. Let me know how you go?
