For 1997, it's impressive. Lesson learned from the first film and improve it from there. Care, talent and effort is what makes the best CGI along with combined with practical effects and used where it needed and when it's necessary.

The CGI in this movie makes Jurassic Park 3, jurassic world, fallen kingdom in shame. Such an amazing piece of work. Most of the scenes which were initially thought of done with animatronics are actually pure CGI. Unbelievable

To me CGI has really hurt film making. And I think it is way over used. Many of the very first uses of CGI still in my opinions seem to hold up over time compared with even today's uses of it. And I think it is because Jurassic Park was made by Speilberg. He was already a master of filmmaking. He already knew all the tricks and ploys and devices that make a movie work or not work. He could have made Jurassic Park with out any visible dinosaurs on screen and it still, most likely, would have been a good movie. Nobody has ever watched a movie, and walking out at the end thinking about how great the CGI was. Like all magic. If you start noticing or paying attention to the trickery or the slight of hand that a magician uses, the magical effect of suspended disbelief goes away. For any movie to be successful, you have to at least partially as the viewer get lost in the film. And throw out any logic or anything like that if it is contrary to the world of the movie. Movies have used trickery since day one. But it's only when the trickery isn't noticed that it becomes useful. CGI and digital effects are no different than any camera trickery.
