And to think that little bit of artistic license you guys took has inspired nearly every depiction of the creature since. Not bad for "the new guy" just winging it with Crash's design.

This is why Jurassic Park's visuals stand up today. The level of detail in the animatronics is astounding. It shows that people used to care about the movies they made. Now CGI just gives everything a cartoony look instead of the awesome gritty, life-like dinos of JP.

I don't think the dilophosaurus had a frill, but that puppet really brought the creature to life. The frill was one of the best liberties ever taken in the world of film making

Its even inspired other media! There's a cute little kids' cartoon on Disney Jr called 'Dino Ranch' where its kind of a Flintstone re-imagining of the old west with a little family that raises and trains dinosaurs that work on their farm. There's an episode where they need to scare pterodactyls out of their cornfield, and a dilophosaur pops its neck frill and startles it away xD

We need to make a move back to practical effects. They look so much more realistic than CGI.

Yeah. Even CGI back then looked better and they did more work with it but moder day dino or monster movies are ridicilous. Not only do modern movies have shit CGI but even creature ideas suck. Rly? sharknado? sandsharks? sharctopus? yes all are shark movies but those movies are getting biggest beating. I can't even remember last NEW good shark movie i saw or monster movie with CGI. They used to make even robot monsters back then. Thats why many movies from 1980-2000 beat new movies. Modern movies are so lazily made. Even toys look better than moder CGI.

This movie is what made me love dinosaurs. And as soon as I saw the Dilophosaurus, I knew it was my favorite dinosaur. The ways it moved was amazing, and it's really hard to capture a soul in a creature, but you people have achieved that. Even with the Dilophosaurus inaccuracies, it is still my favorite dinosaur to this day.

You can tell how much love and joy went into creating each of Jurassic Park's dinosaurs, but seeing this production content from a technical aspect and the amount of skill, creativity, and hard work in bringing these creatures to life is overwhelming. The completed film is truly a high watermark in puppeteer mastery.

This is just... just amazing. As you can imagine from the username here, the Spitter here is my favorite animatronic creature of all time. Huge fan of the thing, and just love seeing all the work that went into bringing it to life. Also a fan of the fictional animal that all this went towards bringing to life. All that hard work definitely didn't go unappreciated- it's a huge chunk of my childhood! Huge fan of the Dilophosaurus, both the fictionalized animal, and the animatronic itself.

I have a feeling there were two Dilophosaurus dinosaur puppets used while filming. One for the general scenes and one specifically meant for the scene when it opens it's frills. In the scenes before the frill action, the frills look very neatly tucked into the neck. Which I think would be difficult with all the umbrella like frame work that pop it open. In the film, the scene when the frills actually pop open, on looking closely you can actually see the frills are already hanging out and ready to open.

Though it is true that filmmakers often use CGI because it allows them the freedom to make changes later in the filmmaking process, but if there is a singular vision, animatronics can and do provide the most seamless effects. Though the frequency of their use in films has gone down, less time for doubt and more room for risk have increased their use in commercials. - David
