This analysis reminds me of “Anytime You Need a Friend” where she’s singing softly to the person in need of encouragement and then towards the end she’s preaching! She was like a pastor towards the end of the sermon!

Proves that Mariah Carey's delivery of music is one of the best. She's basically using her sogns to express, communicate etc. She's literally one of the best vocalists and musician also songwriter and composer ever existed.

I love all her performances of this song for different reasons: SNL was her most raw and bluesy (her growls were 🔥), the Grammy’s was probably her best from a vocal standpoint, everything was pitch perfect, and MTV Unplugged had those amazing background vocalists (Price Sisters, Melanie Daniels, Trey Lorenz, Patrick McMillan, etc) and the SNL horn section that made that performance sound epic and retro. It’s hard for me to pick my favorite. I love all of them (and this performance on Oprah).

@@MalachiXulu i love the grammy performance too, trust all those (unplugged and oprah) SNL vocals band (horn section) gave it a lil plus. Grammy was perfect, it was made for perfection she was in her best voice. hehehe i just like the retro vibe and rawness of SNL.

I knew there was a reason why I love your channel. Our taste in Mariah’s music is the same! (If It’s Over is my favorite Mariah Carey song as well as Emotions being my favorite album from her. It’s probably due to the strong Gospel and Soul influences why it’s my favorite.)

Mariah is just incredible!! she has always told stories through the way she writes, produces and sings her songs right from the beginning till now. Everything is purposefully!!!!. My favourite performance of the song has to be the one at SNL! The vocals and the arrangement!!!

This is also my favorite album! it's the album that I've used to changed people's opinions on Mariah as a vocalist; you really have to listen to the deep cuts to understand her vocal complexity and control.

I love this! To me, this is also why I love Aretha. Aretha usually will have a very solid build up in her ballads before a climax. She takes you on a journey and story. Mariah does well with this as we witness it on many of her ballads as well.

YES!!! Emotions is by far my favorite album vocally as well! She was not playing with the vocals here! Butterfly 🦋 ranks up there as well as her magnum opus. Great analysis as always!

What a great analysis of one of the greatest songs ever written in that era. It was such a bold move for such a young singer! And at the Grammys she performed in front of a lot of living legends of the time! Barbra Aretha and Whitney were there! Mariah is not only one of the greatest vocalists of all time, her catalogue will be around for centuries to come and her vocal technique will be studied for generations to come. Her Xmas music alone is a force to be reckoned with and a lot of her best songwriting moments have occurred in songs that have never been released as a single.Thanks for this video! Ur amazing 😻 😘

Question for you. Do you like the production of “emotions” album? I felt all the singles sounded better live (as opposed to on studio) where she changed the production, especially “make it happen” Apparently “your so cold” was at first intended to the lead single - wouldn’t it have been amazing to hear her attempt this one live at the prime, given incredible difficulty of opening !
