Mariah Carey has a fine voice, immensely popular with record sales. But truth is, she did not change the course of music nor establish a new genre or style, but was only one among many others. If she’d never had a music career, it would all be the same. She is not a “legend.” That word, like “genius” is tossed around inaccurately, quite a lot in contemporary culture. Only a very few musical performers truly influenced music to a deeper, incontrovertible degree, who actually changed the course; whose careers are long gone, and more deserving of the descriptive “legend.” In the 50’s: Chuck Berry-architect of guitar rock; Little Richard-progenitor of piano based rock; Elvis-blending R&B with country/rockabilly and introducing white folk to more rooted music, stand out from others. In the early 60’s, rock and roll was stagnating, but then came The Beatles-transforming songwriting-performing-producing, markedly affecting style and culture globally. Many think Bob Dylan qualifies-bringing electrified folk and a new genre of lyrically deep songs to the scene. And certainly Jimi Hendrix influenced rock with other-worldly psychedelic guitar effects, a unique stage presence. in the 80’s Michael Jackson (w/ Quincy Jones) re-vitalized dance-oriented, Motown Pop and soul more than any other. Many very talented people, equally great performers, but who didn’t actually change music or have the type of impact-are often cited, But if these performers had not existed-very little would be different, and in a historical perspective, wouldn’t be missed. These artists are outstanding, but are not truly “legends” like the short list above.

Michael Jackson is such a legend 👑. Single-handedly changed and developed the music industry. Also, Mariah Carey isn’t even mentioned in this video, yet half the comments in the comment section are making fraudulent claims about her, desperately trying to discredit her and her legacy. But Mariah is and always will be a legend and one of the greatest artists to ever do it! She has nothing left to prove and her talent and success speaks for itself 👑 . Because of the same reasons you mentioned, I think it’s definitely unfair to discredit legends based on lower sales, especially if they brought a lot of creativity and talent and showmanship to the music industry, such as the legends of the past. But on the other hand, sales can be used as a way to measure an artists impact on society at that specific time, which is also an incredible achievement in itself. So imo it’s not that sales mean nothing, it’s that they don’t mean everything and theyr certainly not the end all be all

In regards to Dionne Warwick, she has sold between 75M-100M records in total. Let's not forget how in the 60s and 70s, labels did not try to get black music certified by the RIAA. They did this because they did not want to show just how well the black artists were doing in comparison to their white counterparts and did not want to pay their black artists. Black music paid for these labels to market their white artists. Back to Dionne, she was the first black female artist to be an international pop star. She sold millions of records overseas as well as millions of records domestically. She paved the way, opened up doors, and existed/created spaces for the pop girls that came after her. If her old labels got her singles and albums certified, she would be on the list of best-selling artists of all time. Regardless, she is a legend and pionner. I definitely think folks attach so much to numbers like record sales and streaming number for capitalistic reasons because capitalism likes quantitative things. Yeah she sings but she also wrote and produces and micromanaged her shit lol. So even if she didn’t sing, she would just be another legendary songwriter and producer. It’s a win win for her . That’s the beauty of being a real musician . I always said that Mariah, Whitney and Brandy had voices you couldn’t teach and they made the biggest impact for these girls. That’s just a fact. You can hear a little bit of brandy’s sound in a song for kehlani and etc , Ariana was immediately connected to Mariah and a little bit of Whitney . That’s what makes them all so legendary and even MJB. She don’t have the strongest voice but she dominated the whole female and hip hop collab . Her and Mariah. The worst part about all this is that RIAA keeps changing their rules. Back in 2013, they included global music video views as a criteria of sales towards certification, songs like Bad Romance by Lady Gaga & Baby by Justin Bieber were majorly affected. Bad Romance was certified from 5x plat to 10x plat (Diamond) & Baby was certified from 4x plat to 12x plat on the SAME DAY. Later RIAA revised their rules & included streaming essentially "removing" sales from already highly certified tracks eg. Baby is (although already certified 12x plat) officially 7x plat and will have to sell another 6 million equivalent units to be certified 13x plat. Superbass by Nicki Minaj is another good example. Was certified 4x plat in 2012 then sky rocketed to 8x plat in 2013, then apparently took 8 years to sell "2 million" equivalent units to finally be certified Diamond in 2021. It's a huge flaw in the system.

As someone who's really into chart research and archiving, the one thing I've learned is that it is impossible to quantitatively measure a song's impact with 100% accuracy. Not just difficult, but impossible. Numbers can give a good idea, but it's all relative to certain time periods (different methods of music consumption & changes in population are the main factors) and populations (different groups have varying buying power and varying access to different methods of consumptipn). There is no formula that can accurately measure an artist from the 1920s' impact compared to an artist from the 2020's. This one of many reasons why chart & sales appreciation should be kept separate from music appreciation.

Both told me stories how record companies and managers would corrupt DJs for air time of a song. Since, I have never watched the Grammys, or gave a damn about how many awards an artist has. Great music speaks for itself! It's a damn shame how the industry exploited countless brilliant singers and musicians. This is a subdivision of critical race theory. @@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 One said they were offered drugs, vacations, even "prostitutes" according to my friend who is a woman. But both receptionists at each station said they were given money regularly. I met VESTA at one on a promotional tour for her 4U album. I was near the station and I had my radio on. DJ said listeners can come get a signed picture of VESTA. I had her first cassette with ONCE BITTEN TWICE SHY on it in my car. I walk in the lobby to my friend who told me the stories of corruption. After speaking she asked why was I there (I was the first to get there after DJ said to stop by). With my VESTA cassette, I said I wanted to see if VESTA would sign my cassette. A man setting in the lobby was her manager. He stood and asked "Don't you have the new one?" I said no. He pulls out a giant wad, hands me a 20 and says "Go get her new one, bring it back, let her sign that." I rushed to the nearest record store across the street, they had JUST GOT IT IN, still in shipment box, not even programed in cash register yet. I purchased their first one. When I got back to radio station, VESTA was in back seat of limousine with a line of about 14 people getting signed pictures. As I walked up, her manager pointed at me. Then VESTA motioned with her finger to come here! The line of people made her have to keep turning to sign pictures. So she handed me her stack of pictures to hold in front like a tiny desk so she could sign them. I was the last one. She signed a picture, and my 2 cassettes for me, then they drove away. It was an absolute JOY meeting VESTA!!!! I was already a fan. When she passed, it just broke my heart. When I listen to her hit SWEET LOVE on 4U, it always reminds me of that day, sometimes with tears. I can attest how wonderful she was with everyone in line and me! Just as sweet as can be! But yes, her manager had a GIANT WAD, and I was just a fan. So I can imagine what he may have given to DJs.

Actually emancipation sold 3,500,000 copies WW So it went 3x platinum and 1x gold But the fact you have to pay to update your record sales is wrong the fact that so many black artists have actually sold millions of records and their certifications wont be updated is wrong too. I knew something was wrong when I saw a little Richard interview where he said he would get paid 2mill dollars per hour to perform . 2mill back then would probably be equal to 20 mill

This was so informative! It helps to remember that “legend” isn’t a definable term in a lot of ways, but the ability to influence and capture the moment and then inspire future generations of artists, usually with a fairly long career is a good place to start. Aretha, Diana, Dionne, Donna, they all set the classic legend standard, even if it was in different ways and not at the same time. The definition certainly changed as trends moved toward disco and dance and rock and r&b and hip hop in the 80s and 90s, and that’s normal and okay! I think the most recent artistic “legends” would be Whitney, Mariah, and Janet (and Madonna, definitely culturally and aesthetically if not always vocally) with someone like Beyoncé certifying her intangible title as we speak. All women with a signature sound, style, impact, and measurable influence on the next batch of up and coming singers. Artists like Rihanna have enormous sales numbers and plenty of number ones, but don’t capture the same level of “inspiration” on the next generation (At least musically, maybe in the beauty industry).

However one on this occasion the crowds were massive so I went downstairs to find that the fans had infiltrated our hotel because of its proximity. When I asked who the artist preforming was, I was shocked to hear it was Neil Diamond and he had actually sold out the staple centre 3 nights in a row. At that time music was all about Backstreet boys, Nsync, Brittney. Christina, Justin, but not one of these act could sell out the Staple Centre, not even for one night. Also, Queen stated when they asked her about Adele and what she thought of her artistry that records sales do not determine who will be a legend. Motown was so shady. The Marvelettes Mr. Postman and Don't Mess with Bill both sold well over a million copies but was finally certified gold in 2005. And I get so tired of Mariah fans with that she sold this many and that many like that makes her a better singer than those that came before her.

Wow that was enlightening. Makes me have deepwr respect for anciwnt legends. It's miraculous that in such a fast paced world I know music from 5 & 6 decades ago. Every1 knows Warwick, James B, Jackson 5, Dianna R & the supremes, Tina, Cher, Aretha, Dolly P, Donna S... They are legends for being timeless & still remembered.

Don’t tell the beyhive that! 😂 They have always obsessively lauded the record sales of their fave over other artists. That is until certain other artists had overtaken Mrs Carter’s sales, then of course ‘Sales don’t matter’ became their favorite mantra 😂😂

Beyoncé and "beyhive" never bring sales as an argument for the only good reason that Beyoncé has actual talent and you can see that when she is on a stage. She is one of if not the greatest female performer ever so yes she doesnt need sales to prove herself. And go on the RIAA site and see how "crazy in love" is still gold certified when its probably already Diamond in real because Beyoncé never update those sales

This is indeed a FACT! In these times, streaming was easy to be manipulate by fanbases. What saddens me that actual sales of physical singles and albums, are not equal to digital singles especially streams. But RIAA change certification, which combines it's numbers of sales and streams which makes it more confusing. Some countries certification even count every view in KZfaq or other platforms, this results unequal treatment to the old artist, plus past decades music wasn't as accessible as today. But at the end of the day, the world knows how great an artist is and they will be remembered by their own contributions on how they reshape the world through music.

It must be said, there's an anti-black sentiment in disguise when a lot of these lambs try and discredit other black women using stan wars as a cover. To some of them, Mariah is the only black singer they actively listen to, so they don't really care about black music and what singers like Dionne represent. They are very quick to attack black artists that are somehow compared to Mariah and say some of the most dumb shit. I have had countless of experiences with them on social media. I've seen many of them claim that Whitney had “a common black voice”, which is straight up racist and ignorant. Many of them are not black - usually asian, white, non-black latinos, etc. And they're toxic even to Mariah, wanting her to sing like 1996 so bad, pitching every single note (many times with wrong notes just to further extend her vocal range), editing live performances (even when Mariah has posted the original clip of her duet with Patti on her Facebook), and creating this expectation that she will sing high notes everytime she's onstage, making comments about her body and how they want her to lose weight, and whatnot. Mariah is one of the greatest singers of all time and one of the most legendary songwriters to ever lift a pen, but her stans are musically as intelligent as people who claim Selena Gomez a good singer. I'm not even exaggerating.

That’s because Mariah is not perceived as “black” in the same way that a Whitney Houston or a Mary J is because she isn’t. She’s a white appearing biracial. These people would not go up for her if she looked like Lauryn Hill.

The tweet about Mariah at the beginning is just ignorant. If social media would’ve been around in the 90s, she would have had one of the largest of not the largest account. She’s almost 30 years past her prime so 10 million is pretty amazing.

That is true! Record sales do not make you a legend, but Mariah Carey IS a legend. She is the only female singer, out of the vocal trio (Whitney & Celine), to write/produce majority of her music and she conformed to the changes of the music industry (also appealed to younger generations).
