The West Germanic languages constitute the largest of the three branches of the Germanic family of languages (the others being the North Germanic and the extinct East Germanic languages).
There is a debate among scholars about the existence or not of a West Germanic protolanguage, that happened after the East Germanic languages broke off between the 1st and 2nd century BC. This rupture gathered the Northwest Germanic languages and created three language groups, conventionally called 'West Germanic':
The North Sea Germanic, related to Anglo-Frisian and Old Saxon
Weser-Rhine Germanic, related to Dutch.
Elbe Germanic, related to the Upper German and most Central German dialects of Old High German.
If you are interested to see your native language/dialect be featured here.
Submit your recordings to otipeps24@gmail.com.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Here in Berlin-Brandenburg, there is originally some Old Flemish and Old Low Franconian influence because many colonists in middle ages settled in slavic villages for their expertise in drainage. But that only matters for (Markish) Low German communities, wich are almost extinct and got replaced by High German. However the local dialect of High German (Brandenburgish/South Markish) still reflects on said history.

To be fair, I believe that English has just as much in common with the North Germanic languages (b/c of the Danish Viking influence) as with the West Germanic. Just saying.

Funny you say that, I've been meaning to talk to a proper linguist as my theory that english (and also scots and yola and such) are their own branch of the germanic family because of its history of north and west germanic mixing.

It seems, to me...it's like somewhere between a language and a pidgin, being that a pidgin is a simplified language so 2 groups of people that don't speak the same tongue, can communicate. Tho, pidgins aren't considered 'full languages or dialects.

If east frankish is in the high german category, then isn't the old burgundian in that group also? (or is east frankish actually burgundian?) You also hear ppl mention burgundian a lot in french medieval times periods, but not quite as a same language as their own history.
@leonardoschiavelli6478

Burgundian belonged to Gothic branch (East Germanic), whereas Franconian stands for Istvaeonic family (West Germanic).

Central and East Frankish were much more changed by the consonant shift, unlike low Frankish. That is why they are grouped with high-German, to which it is much more similar. The Frankish dialects in Germany are dead or dying. And especially for the Franconia region the linguistic connection isn’t as clear, which is ironic given the name.

The Saxons came from Jutland and they were first sea warriors like the Vikings. Probably "Saxon" was a kind of word for "Viking". When the Saxons became a tribe, they then called the Danes "Vikings". It was the same custom.
