Having used several different brands of contact cement on leather and rubber, I would say they all work fine. There will be differences in the amount if time they take to tack up, the amount of time you have to put them together and the amount of time it takes to dry.

Hey! I am a leather worker and have been for about 7 years - and I use only barge and sew through the leather every day. It is essentially contact cement. Paul Long who is a master sheath maker for over 40 years has only ever used Barge cement. With that said - I hand sew leather in a traditional manner and Paul uses leather sewing machines. You may be speaking about a fabric sewing machine - and I have no experience with that. I would suggest this when using barge before you sew - coat both parts you want to hold together with a thin layer of Barge and let it fully dry. Then put them together. It is contact cement, however, so you have to get it right the first time - there is no moving it around. When you sew through fully dried Barge - it will not be sticky or grab your needles like partially dried cement can. Thanks so much for the others. I learned something!
@iLoveLeatherNYC

Thanks for leaving a comment. I agree with you I am a big fan of Barge Rubber Cement (blue can) I use it religiously. As for the directions on HOW to use it, its mentioned to follow mfg directions and yes you have to coat both sides of the two pieces you are sticking together. Now about machines? I have both industrial and commercial, but I must say I would not want anyone to ruin their machine this is why I don't recommend Barge Cement in the (yellow can) once it dries and/or gets on something its the yellow devil. I'm glad you got something out of the video and perhaps the life hacks were helpful.

Hi. That sounds so nice, curious about about the finished look of your project. If I had to suggest one from this video it would be the Fieblings (yellow skinny bottle). This one is fairly inexpensive (you are doing a small patch job) and will dry clear yet remain flexible. Also consider: Hot Glue though I don't cover that here. Good luck!

I want to glue python leather to shoe leather and then re sew through it. do I use the barge rubber tf or can I use the green barge infinity glue?
@iLoveLeatherNYC
@iLoveLeatherNYC 7 жыл бұрын
Hi. I don't cover Barge Infinity (green can) in this video, so cannot comment on it. Based on what's shown here? Rubber Cement if sewing by machine. If by hand you could use the Barge All-Purpose. To be safe though, I would defer to the Rubber it will work either way (if you mess up, there is time to correct with Rubber Cement) All purpose is unforgiving. Be sure to TEST before slathering it on...

Happy New Year to you. Of the glues here? I'd say in order of preference: E-6000, Fieblings, then Rubber Cement. BUT all that being said I have been using a new product lately called: SHOE FIX GLUE. This stuff is like super glue for leather and dries fast. My concern about your project is to make sure the outside edges are done well, sounds like it would peel off in this area first. Hope that helps you.

Yes I think it would work. However I do think you need to hand sew the patch. Little small tiny stitches around the edge, pick a color that works. You will need a needle for leather and bonded nylon thread tho. Commercial thread won't hold it.

None of these. I would suggest taking it to a dry cleaner or shoe repair professional if you want it to look seamless. If you insist on doing it yourself you have to overlap the two sides or somehow stabilize the area underneath the tear before you join them together, then use something to hold it. To make things easier if its possible consider putting a patch on top.

Every leather bag maker I know has ALWAYS used Barge cement to hold two pieces of leather together! We sew through it without blinking. Of course you need an industrial machine, but unless you're only working with super-thin leather, you'll need an industrial machine. You'd better get a walking foot industrial, for that matter. Great video! Thanks for spending time making it. I'm glad that you mentioned about the smell, I've been using the Barge all purpose cement for quite some time, the major thing I don't like it is the smell: not only is strong but also can stay for a very long time after dried, I made some leather knife sheath with it a few years ago and now I can still smell it. Can you recommend any glue that doesn't have strong smell? I'm currently planning to restore an antique book which has a few cracks on the spine that need to be repaired, glues with strong smell will probably ruin the book. Thanks again.

I would start with E6000, its pretty good. A bit gun shy if I'd use the All Purpose Cement, since I've only used it for bonding two layers that stick together (think mayo on a sandwich, not icing on a cake).

Hello B. Dillinger, I hope you are well and that you can answer my question. What glue would you recommend to attach fabric to leather, specifically a muslin fabric to an old cosmetic case. I want to put pictures of not so well known women in history to make the case look vintage. I hope you can give me some advise. I am doing this along with several other projects for a friend and have had them for a couple of years. Inspiration starting striking the beginning of this year and this is the last project. Thank you for your time.

Spray Adhesive. It will give you feather light coverage, not soak through the fabric and stick well. This sounds like an important project, make sure you test first. Good luck.

What is the rhinestones fall off or I decide I want them off is there a safe way to bling my leather jacket without damaging the actual leather itself ? Will that glue 6000 glue wash off in the event the rhinestones come off ?
@iLoveLeatherNYC
@iLoveLeatherNYC 2 жыл бұрын
To the best of my knowledge there is not a safe way to remove without damaging the leather E-6000 is permanent. However. If you think you want them off at a later point? I would buy a black jacket (no other color) and apply the rhinestones. When you want to remove later, pull them off, clean the area with acetone. This will take away the glue, but it strips the leather and changes the color. You can then paint it over with black Angelus Acrylic Paint (do not use another brand, its for leather). Your jacket will not be restored to perfect condition but you can decorate it another way.

I am trying to repair a vinyl chair that split apart along a seam and I do not want to resew it. I thought about putting a vinyl patch underneath the seam split and then using E6000 to glue the patch to the split seam to bring the seam together. I would then use clear tape to keep it pull together while the glue dries. 2 questions - 1) Is that a good idea? Rather than using vinyl under the split seam, is there better material to pull a seam closed that won't spread with time? 2) When I glue vinyl to vinyl, do I use the front of the vinyl or the back which has the backer on it? Thanks.
@iLoveLeatherNYC
@iLoveLeatherNYC 5 жыл бұрын
Hello. I'm not sure I can help. I don't sew vinyl as the glues discussed here focus on leather. However, based on what you've said and described sounds like you are on the right path of reinforcing from underneath, but I still think you may need to put something over the top where the split is.

Gee that's a hard one. I don't think I'd recommend anything from this list. My suggestion is to take them to place that repairs shoes and get an estimate, it may not be as much as you think. The one product I like and have used many times is called 'shoe fix', I ordered it from Amazon for about $15 or so. Trouble is if that doesn't work, you still end up at the shoe repair anyway, sometimes you gotta leave it to a professional.
