It is made on purpose. This is a a song about desperation, yet it sounds happy and cheerful, just like everything Liza's character does. This is all Sally's life is about: singing and having fun, without thinking about tomorrow, because life's too short to be taken seriously. After all, life is a cabaret.

So much passion and commitment to a role, Liza Minelli gives her all and the result is a performance to remember. I've seen the movie forty years ago and I still remember Sally Bowles in "Cabaret". Liza Minelli gives one of the best performances ever captured on film. Truly, Bob Fosse's masterpiece!

I disagree cabaret is my favorite musical of all time and Liza gts this song wrong. it's supposed to be a sad song but she plays it like it's a happy song. in the musical she's at one of her lowest points when singing this and the lyrics go with the sad mood here it doesn't fit and Liza is playing a talented version of Sally the thing that was interesting about Sally was that she was so ambitious and thought so highly of herself and never admitted that she wasn't as good as she made herself out to be

When did you become a director? Sally's on stage persona (her job) had nothing to do with her personal life and that's what the DIRECTOR chose to express.

+Frank Hodges all I'm trying to say is I don't prefer her take on the material. I prefer other versions like Natsha Richardson's version for the 1998 Broadway revial.

I saw the movie Cabaret in a theater where the smallest movement and subtle gestures are magnified twenty times. What I remember in this last scene is Sally (Liza M.) trying to mask and hide her despair at the future unfolding before her (and her resignation and acceptance of the things that can not be) thru artificial mirth and bravado on stage. That was what I was seeing in Sally's eyes in the last scene. There was nothing happy at all in the playing of this scene, as I saw it. What I saw was a lot of irony

Because, as you see in the movie, she's performing almost exclusively to nazis in the last number...the camera pans the audience and it's all brown shirts. We have learned exactly nothing.

Kander and Ebb actually wrote this for Liza Minnelli for Broadway but backers refused to put an unknown into such a big part in a major musical. Some years later, after her Oscar nomination for the Sterile Cuckoo and after everyone else turned it down, she got the part. It still holds the record for movie with most Oscar wins without winning Best Picture, but of course, it was against the Godfather. What's amazing is how well it hasn't aged. And Bob Fosse is such a remarkable director. Every frame in the movie looks like a piece of art with the movie made on a shoestring budget. I can only imagine how good Chicago would have been if it had made with Liza and Goldie Hawn and directed by Mr. Fosse.

In the 70's me and my friends went to dance and drama classes, and all we wanted was to be like this. This song makes the hairs on the back of my back stand up! We learned all the songs and dreamt of being on Broadway or the West End.

I have loved Liza's performance in this movie for many years. I also had the privilege of seeing the second Broadway company that starred Joel Grey doing the original version of the show. I've watched many different actors and actresses in the updated version. I like many of them. To truly understand the emotional state that Sally has reached at this point you need to watch the different versions. Liza has the energy in hers but the newer Broadway version concentrates more on Sally's emotional state. Here is a fairly young woman who wanted to be a star and hopefully fall in love. She reached for the brass ring and missed. She's had an abortion which even under the best of circumstances back then was highly dangerous. She entered into a love affair and ultimately ended up losing them both. She is a booze and probably drug induced mess. As she sings This song she is basically saying "Screw You World! I'm going to live life and go out on my own terms." Also underneath all this Sally is probably terrified of what is happening in Germany as the Nazis take over. The German people saw what was beginning to happen around them but didn't want to believe it would happen to them. Somewhere inside her I think she knows many of her friends could end up disappearing because many of the people in the Cabaret are for the most part homosexuals, Transvestites, and others that were eventually persecuted first. The Nazis targeted mental hospitals, the LGBT community, anyone with a physical deformity, etc. first. They were rounded up and either euthanized or sterilized so they couldn't reproduce. If I was Sally I'd probably be a mess too.

I think, she really got all the feeling you need in this performance. First, it's the wonderful actress who can overcome every sad emotion in a few seconds just when the stage light is put on and you can only see some sadness in her eyes.... but then at 2:03 she shows the perfect breakdown of Sally...it's so great!

There's also a parallel between the songs being performed inside the cabaret and what's going on outside of it. For instance, the song 'Money' comes up right after Sally meets the wealthy Maximillian, and 'Two Ladies' is a parody of the triangle between Sally, Max, and Brian.

Exactly! ^_^ At the start of the film in "Willkommen" they even say to "leave your troubles outside", & that in the cabaret "life is beautiful". While they mostly address the issues "off stage", they do still address it "on stage" as well with the scene where the dancers become troops.

Maybe it is a bit subtle, but film acting is usually more subtle than theatre acting (basically because it can be, as acting for a camera is often up close & personal while in a theatre it has to carry across distance) & it is all there if you just look. I personally think the start of her breakdown in this song is incredibly heartfelt & realistic. (I work in mental health & know a bit about breakdowns from experience; personal & professional, & have always thought she did this very well.)

Absolutely! Good point! ^_^ You'll also find that the brilliant; "If you could see her through my eyes" cuts directly to Fritz who has clearly fallen in love with Natalia. (Poor Fritz.) But as a side note, my absolute favourite Kit Kat dancer; Helga, (played by Louise Quick) was not only one of the girls in "Two Ladies" but also danced as the gorilla! ^_^ She said it was damn near impossible to see with the mask on, & she had to rehearse with a paper bag on her head so she could do it blind!

In the original Broadway play, Sally was (rightly) depicted as a sociopath. Just like the emerging German Nazis, she marched through people's hearts with no regard. When Jill Hayworth sang this song, she truly meant every word. Hollywood sanitized it, and gave Ms. Minnelli a conscience for the timid of heart cinema crowd.
