My answers to Jason’s question would be as follows: The more you open up the aperture and the farther away you focus the lens (= the closer you move the lens system toward the film), the smaller your image circle and circle of good image quality will be. The more you stop down the aperture and the closer you focus (= the more you remove the lens system from the film), the larger both image circle and circle of good image quality will be. The circle of good image quality is smaller than the image circle. Of course ‘good image quality’ is a concept relative to the level of quality you’d like your images to have. Lousy image quality can be a great aesthetic concept. On some historical spec sheets of lens manufacturers, e.g. Schneider, you will find information about image circles depending on two or even three f-stops, usually wide open and f/22. Some folks at largeformatphotographyforum may know where to find them.

I've been shooting 4x5" on a 75mm Grandagon-N f/6.8 and really struggling to see the edges of my frame to focus due to fall-off. Today I mounted a 150, 210 & 305mm f/9.0 Agfa Repro lenses on boards and as they all cover 8x10 and larger at infinity with a flat-field, on 4x5 the light fall-off is non-existent. Despite the smaller aperture, composition and focus is a joy. In future, any of my lens purchases will cover substantial real estate above my intended format for this reason....absolutely worth the money and I would suggest better than a "faster" lens.

In my experience, Tessars (Xenar, Optar, Ektar, Industar, Nikkor-M etc) have an additional circle of illumination beyond the image circle. There is no mechanical vignetting to prevent this. The result is that if you go beyond the image circle (the actually sharp image) you get a very mushy image quality. I have seen this on a 135mm Xenar, 105mm Xenar and a 450mm Nikkor-M when I have used too much front rise (yes, I actually hit the edge of the image circle on a 450mm Nikkor-M). Plasmats (most view camera lenses where the widest f-stop is 5.6 - Symmars for example) generally are pretty sharp out to the edge of the image circle, although there is usually mild loss of sharpness in the corners. I often check for vignetting by sighting through the cutout corners of the ground glass. If the light coming through the iris appears as a circle, I know I won’t get vignetting at that f-stop. If it appears elongated (like a cat’s eye) then I can expect some mild vignetting. And if I can’t see light through the iris at all, I KNOW I will get vignetting. Unfortunately not all cameras have cut out corners on the ground glass to check for this. I also have a 150mm G-Claron. I use it primarily for close up photography on 5x7 and occasionally 8x10 so I haven’t tested it properly at infinity. I did see distinct vignetting in the corners of the ground glass at f/9 on an 8x10 but never shot a film test. It’s good to hear it will fully cover when stopped down.

And do not forget that some wide angel lenses need a centerfilter to cure the vignetting which is not a flaw but an unavoidable physical light falloff to the borders of the imagecircel. So when getting a super angulon 75 that will cover barely 13x18 or 5x7 you need that expensive centerfilter to avoid strong vignetting. At 4x5 it will be ok without it. Vignetting on film depends how far you use them off their designed format

I have read that you can actually look thru the lens back at the ground glass and see if the image covers the area of the glass. Is this indeed true

Could you test the projection circle of a lens by setting up a pair of light-blocking curtains about a foot away from a white wall or a blank canvas on an easel, keeping the room bright on one side and dark on the wall side, and then hold the lensboard between the curtains with the rear element pointed toward the wall? You could stop it down and move it back and forth to see how the image on the wall changes.
