Excellent tutorial about one of Affinity Photo's most confusing features. For me, the most annoying thing about image layers is you can't copy any part of it without rasterizing it, even though copying is non-destructive. If you make a selection of part of an image and then try to copy it, you end up copying the whole image, not just the selected region. At that point, you can rasterize the copied layer and then Affinity Photo will give you the selected area you wanted.

Many thanks Olivio, you promised to make a video on this topic in answer to an earlier question of mine, and you delivered. Very helpful and informative video. Saved as a reference.

Wonderful again... I'm becoming an addict ;-) You are a born teacher... so clear. What I like best with you is when you say “Don't do this, if you do, this is what's going to happen“... how many time have I done wrong moves without having a clue of what I was doing wrong... and them I'm lost ! You are a blessing in my learning efforts ! Thank you.

Why are you guys commenting on his pronunciation? He's not English, nor is he American, so he's not expected to pronounce words the way those two groups would (even within those two groups there are dozens of phonetic variations). As long as you understood what he's trying to convey, and it's easy enough to understand if you're not hung up on the accent, how does it matter? The world is full of differences, and we can't really have everybody homogenizing into one or two particular phenotypes.

Great material Olivio. But You could also mention that: - linking/ embedding also works with JPG/PNG etc. pictures, not only AP/AD files. - with Resource Manager You can change between linked and embedded files. - it's also possible to replace linked/embedded file with Resource Manager. - changing placement type and replacing files is very useful when You prepare mockups. - embedding pictures (JPG, PNG, etc.) in AP file prevent them from loosing (for example by accidentally deleting from disk or moving to another directory). - it's also easier to take Your project "away". - and on the end You can collect (save) all embedded files in choosed location on disk.
@OlivioSarikas2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, but embedded files really was just a side note in this video. The main topic is image VS pixel layer. I will do a video about embedded vs linked another time

Another reason for converting an image layer into a pixel layer is if you want to use third party plugins. They usually won't work with image layers.

I'm confused about one thing. You said you can't paint on an image, but then you painted on an image layer (it became a pixel layer) I see two possibilities: 1. Image layer is now gone, replaced by a pixel layer 2. Image layer still exists, but also there is now a pixel layer too. Which of these two is it? I understand the raster part, but what an image layer is, is still rather unclear (meaning, under what circumstances would I prefer an image layer to a rasterized / pixel layer? Is there an analog in Photoshop that is like an image layer in Affinity?
@OlivioSarikas2 жыл бұрын
The Image layer is converted to a Pixel layer. I even show the message to that conversion in my video ;)

English can be difficult. Say cawpied rather than copied. No offence intended.

Really? Do I pronounce it wrong? I will check that. It might be that my pronounciation is. Ore British English. I will check on that
@johnnysparkleface30962 жыл бұрын
Cawpied makes it even more confusing. Instead say COP (rhymes with stop or mop) & "eed" (as in seed but without the s)
