Imaging for Neck Pain Explained

In this video, I'd like to address when you should get imaging studies for neck and radiating arm pain, also known as a cervical radiculopathy and which imaging study is best to get. Should it be an x-ray, an MRI, a CAT scan or ultrasound? Watch to find out.

You sound like my parents, they never want us to have radiation (unnecessary X-rays) for any reason. I agree, it's better safe than sorry. Also, I worry about radiating my thyroid, since it's apparently important; the ENT I used to work for said they should always shield your thyroid for dental X-rays.

It sounds like you have very intelligent parents! Unnecessary is the key word. Sometimes x-rays are necessary and it's worthwhile remembering that they involve very little radiation. Still, if you don't need them, why get them? And, yes, your thyroid is very important and particularly sensitive to radiation exposure so best to cover it up if possible when around radiation. Thank you that was very helpful. As a side issue, as I have dyslexia and also because it would make it clearer could you put the three different X-ray etc, just on the left hand side, with bullet points when you have nearly finished. I don’t think it would take a few Minutes and would reinforce the Three different items. However thank you so much for your time.

Can you actually visualize the nerves and nerve roots themselves coming off the cord and measure how inflamed they are? Or can you only measure the size of the space between the foramnia?

Will they make you get a contrast with this type of MRI? I want to avoid the contrast at all costs! it's so toxic
