@@gfp4034 , I believe it is common practice among referees not to penalize one fencer for the bad behavior of the opponent. For instance if you step off the strip and hit me, your touche is annulled, since you are at fault. If I hit you as you step off the strip I am not penalized, I get the touche. When I reffed back in the late 90s it was very common, especially among epee fencers to step off the strip while trying to get a touche. if they succeeded they didn't bother bringing the step off to the attention of the ref. Imagine that. But if they got hit? "Sir, I was off the strip, so he can't score!" Now I'll tell you a dirty little secret of reffing. If a fencer starts complaining that he got the touche before the ref called Halt, the ref would say "Oh, you didn't here me call Halt the first time? I'm sorry, I'll speak up. No touche."
