Very clever technique :), and a little tip "Curve" can be very conveniently textured without convert it to mesh, you just have to select "Use UV For Mapping": i.imgur.com/SGwG6eR.jpg

16:15 I would have convert it to mesh, then selected the seam and pressed "m" merge by distance

That would work okay as long as you select only the 2 you want, and then because there is separation between them, you'd need to adjust the merge by distance value to merge those two. Which, by that time you could have just clicked merge at centre

merge it before you convert it to curve ;)

does the surface follow and quad unwrap work with the current version of blender (2.9)?

There is a working version! If you Google surface follow 2.8 there is a version which works. I used it a couple of days ago! However I'm currently not at the PC so I can't fidn if right now :(
