Leyland SME was the proud host of the IMLEC 2019 competition. Fine weather, plentiful support and a fine display of miniature engineering led to a fantastic weekend and a total of 28 great runs over the three days.

The Leyland Society would like to thank all the competitors and visitors to the event for helping make it so enjoyable for all concerned. With the level of support and enthusiasm shown by everyone who attended we hope the competition will continue to grow and look forward to IMLEC 2020 at Maidstone.

Fantastic display---my parents moved to Leyland in 1975 and my sister and brother still live in the area--For quite a small town, they have a fantastic park in Worden Park and the engineers there are, in a word--BRILLIANT !!!--wonderful video

The performance from that 2-8-4 Berkshire was immense but my fave was the U boat.

That Nickel Plate Road 4-8-4 looked to be effortless with 43 + driver on! I know American locos are, almost by definition, seriously bigger than British locos, but some of 'our best' are, proportionately, as powerful or more powerful than theirs. A 9F has about the same power to weight ratio as #4014, the UP Big Boy.

American locomotives are impressive machine but English locomotives are works of art.Not saying one is better than the other, they're different. As an Australian i have neither horse in this race but i guess a bit biased as locomotives in my home state predominately of English design with the odd Baldwin here and there.

@Roger Whittle American locos have intrigued me lately, a study of their tractive efforts on wikipedia is interesting, most are quite disappointing! A GWR King pulls 291lb per ton of loco weight, where the Niagara 4-8-4s manages only 150lb per ton. Seems comically bad, yet apparently they were very efficient....

Some beautiful models there. I'd hate to think there may be any damage incurred with wheelslip!! Looks like everyone enjoyed themselves and the weather held out for you. Alan.

Honestly other than some (minor) accelerated wear to the wheels there should be no ill effects to the wheelslip unless its slipping past normal operational maximum rpm as far as i could guess.Full size locos don't generally have an issue aside from stalling. If you ever saw somebody drive a derailed full size engine back on you would probably have a heart attack :) They are after all "locomotives not pocket watches" ;) I don't have a lot of experience with miniature stuff, have driven plenty of them(once upon a time i even got paid to do so) but never had experience long term maintenance, just started my own first build a couple of months ago,so i could be totally wrong and happy to be corrected.

I always prefer to view steam locomotive's, because ,I live such a place where steam engine inaugurate in1880 at tindharay Darjeeling, Darjeeling Himalayan railway now UNESCO world heritage, near first reverse was made and my village is full of steam railway staff resides and there is railway workshop also for steam engine, we love and enjoy steam movement

Many thanks for sharing. I recall seeing this event from another year also here. I'd be interested in how the Dyno Car itself works. I can figure out how the pulling effort is measured, but how is the energy consumption measured? Which is needed for the efficiency calculation I guess.

If I recall, they give the engineers a known quantity of coal, and then weigh how much is left after the run, thus telling them how much was burned, in turn telling them energy expenditure.

Firstly looks like an excellent turn out to a great display. Secondly don't calculate your load by a simple head count. Some people carry more ballast than others, that first loco looked like it was attempting Shap with leaves on the line. Removing my tongue from my cheek , some beautiful loco's in steam. Thanks for posting.

Was it the P2 that won? Nothing was mentioned about the locos at the presentation.

Great video with some impressive driving skills shown managing wheelslip(love all your content, its all beautifully shot!I do appreciate the high resolution as well, I don't appreciate them when they distract me from working on my own loco though!) if only somebody can come up with some scale sand one of these days! I did find the audio during the presentation a bit low,too low for me to follow, maybe you need a different (or lapel) mic for doing that kind of stuff in future, not a dig just a suggestion, what you do takes a lot of work and i understand and appreciate it,thank you.Anyone know what the approximate train weights would have been? I see on the chart they cover everything but that data, just list no of adults.I don;t know how much the rolling stock weighs and am interested to know roughly the load a average 5" loco can pull,im taking educated(going of known loads ive seen small 0-4-0 5" tank engines pull up max scale grades) guess of around 500kg?
