Makers, Artmakers, Peacemakers: Immaculate perception?
Do you discriminate? UCLA law professor Jerry Kang exposes the phenomenon of automatic processing and how it relates to explicit and implicit bias. Decades of research shows that attitudes and stereotypes influence how we see and behave. Despite our best efforts, are we all under the sway of "the rightness of whiteness?" And is there evidence showing that these biases can be reduced -- at least temporarily? Using humor and audience participation, Kang challenges our assumptions while shifting our perceptions of at least one Asian male.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

For the IAT test I think it would be interesting to see what happens if you switch the white face with another race and see if results change.

Lisa, the "momentum" effect is accounted for in the design of the Implicit Association Test. The test randomizes the order of the requested associations and consists of more than one trial.

Very interesting, but I wonder if it's possible to totally avoid implicit bias. Probably a reasonable approach will be to consciously correct for it? I look forward to more information on the subject.

We can recognize it and find ways to minimize it. But not possible to avoid it completely.

I'm curious how they compensated for momentum if, as described, the beginning portion of the exam associated things one way then, later, began mixing the associations opposite to the way they were organized in the beginning. In other words: how can they be sure they didn't accidentally prime the people they studied, and instead of measuring true associations they measured the momentous effect of a lazy brain simply following a learned pattern?

This Issue needs a new perspective. The color of a persons skin is not the determining factor. Nationality is a determining factor. Respecting one another for what they have to offer is what is important.Look on the inside and give each other a chance.

I really enjoy Jerry Kang's work. It is definitely an introspective look at the issue, and an important piece to a very very large puzzle. Obviously, this isn't just about implicit bias, but steps to ensuring fairness. At some point, though, there must be a discussion about explicit systematic repair, due to centuries of White male colonialism, and the power to control the way resources are shared. This is where it'll get interesting, because a person may discover all of their biases, but still isn't willing to put their pride aside when it's time to do systematic "repair", and make sure that the most affected groups are getting the most constructive help. Can't just put money in a pot and say "I'm helping minorities", because the bottom-tier never sees that money, and you can't just release the oppressive shackles and say "everybody is fair now", not without repairing the deficit. Failure to do that, and you will pay for it in the long run....with interest.

Just like there are multiple ways of skinning a cat, there are multiple ways of judging a person. In the military, I found that people tend to be judged by their rank, MOS, physical build and performance, job performance, demeanor, as well as the type of treatment they receive from their peers and superiors - at least before you get to know them from observing and interacting with them everyday. A different lifestyle, requiring a different way of categorizing people. Biases are also informed by personal experiences - not just what people tell you, or what is portrayed in media. This becomes important to each person, because to them, it's undeniable raw data based on their own observation. Their observation is based on what reality tends to be (not idealized notions, like "the dream" as noble as it may be).

It would be interesting to see the racial breakdown of those that take the implicit bias test. I find it interesting that the percentile is so high, as is drastically exceeds the percentage of whites in America.

I understand what you are saying and I agree that we should keep an open mind, but I feel like we also need to keep in mind that our brains are there to store information and help us make decisions that will protect us. I would never tell my daughters NOT to assume a group of loud drunk men walking toward her in an alley have the best intentions because I had a bad experience in the past. NO, I am going to tell them that to ASSUME a group of drunk men walking toward you at night do not have good intentions and go straight to your car and lock the doors. We must find a balance, that place of noticing where we are completely disconnecting from our innate inner guidance (past experienced memories, body tensing up, shortness of breath), and where we can be open minded in a reasonable way. Don't label yourself as bad for using deductive reasoning. Also, it is OK to celebrate and build upon the strengths that certain groups happen to have developed over time. Can we not celebrate that many Asians happen to be good at math and utilize that skill to develop the most bomb as rocket ship ever made? Can I not celebrate that all the women in my family are really into nurturing through cooking and have created the best recipe book ever? Very cool! I think we need to work more on celebrating peoples skills rather than shaming ourselves for "making assumptions".

The very interesting part is the error rate of these supposed IAT tests is over 40%. Statistic tests for psychology tests that are considered "reputable" don't have an error rate of 5%. There is a reason none of these IAT tests are permitted to be used in court....because in other testing, the same person taking the same test TEN times...finds themselves producing TEN DIFFERENT results. But there is great money in grants.

What if implicit biases (based on intuition and guy feeling) are actually more accurate than explicit biases (based off of society's pressure on people to be politically correct)? I mean, if you look at the demographics, don't proportionately more Asians excel in math and science? Why do Asians make up the majority of many UC's (and come in 2nd after Whites for prestigious private institutions) while Hispanics make up the majority of CSU's? Why is it that I tend to see more black homelesss people in the Westwood area than black UCLA students? These numbers can't all be the result of subconscious discrimination.

What is cause of the bias and what is effect? There are many studies that tease this apart. Check, for example, research on stereotype threat and the impact on performance.

You may be correct that it isn't all the result of subconscious discrimination, but due to the relatively recent open discriminations, it will impact multiple generations while the gap is widening. Example: Gen 1: middle class family working part time / salary Gen 2: Children get better educated than parents, go on to upper middle class Gen 3: Grandchildren get special privliges of being in the upper middle class, could break into upper class vs Gen 1: Homeless family, trying to get by with basic needs not being met Gen 2: Children get a slight boost up (maybe) Lower class family working to support basic needs, needs to live with a large family unit to make ends meet Gen 3: Lower Middle class family working part time/salary to support basic needs Gen 4: middle class family working part time/salary This assumes that these jumps can be made in a single generation, but notice how by the time that the homeless family barely gets to middle class, the original middle class family has had multiple opportunities to break into an upper class. You might want to take a look at Pod Save The People, it offers some great insight into the effects of discrimination, etc.

@@maryfitzpatrick9237 Stereotypes, not just from what we hear, but also what we experience. Stereotypes are a thing BECAUSE there is a good amount of truth to it (of course not for everyone in that group, but the majority). We can dismiss it explicitly cuz society is telling us it's bad, but you can't dismiss it implicitly because that's controlled by your perception alone which is founded off of most likely real experiences that are undeniable.
