I was able to increase the range on my Tesla Model Y Performance more than a Long Range model Y. All I had to do was swap out the heavy Uberturnbine wheels and go with TSportline's 18" Wheel/Tire set up.
Check out my previous video to see the process:

I forgot to mention that my car has been recalibrated for a 19” rim. The difference not being counted for is 1 mph less than displayed…not considerate enough to delegitimization this test given the 275 wh/mile is even less than 288 wh/mile as reported on InsideEV for the long range model y. 275wh/mile is a conservative number, I over shot my start point on the return heading uphill. I was getting more like 265 wh/mile. Thanks!

I bought a 2022 PMY in Aug 2022 and had some TSportLine 18" tires/wheels sitting in my garage waiting on it's delivery. I did drive the OMY 2500 with the 21" UT to include a 2K mile road trip to get a baseline then swapped out the tires/wheels. I now have 56xx miles and have kept detailed records. It's clear the 18s recovered at least 50% of the delta between the 330 and 303 rated range. and I did get better performance as reported by my DRAGY. With the 21s my 1/4 dropped from 12.09 to 11.79 seconds. The car rides and feels so much better and I no longer have fear of curbs and potholes and can now rotate them. I was going to sell the 21s but the market is in the toilet. I guess many other folks are doing the same thing flooding the market with the 21s. But I was told if I traded a PMY back to Tesla without the OEM tires/wheels I'd take a hit on the trade-in. So I'm saving them for that day when I trade it in for 2024. The 18s should be offered as an option. So I recovered an honest 15 to 18 miles of range and I think there might be more to be gained back. It effectively creates a new model. And TSportLine engineers these sets specifically for the Tesla PMY so there is nothing to worry about.

Wow! You need to make a video too! That is amazing to hear, I knew I was on to something big here and I was thrilled to see the results. Yes, it’s actually better in performance when it comes to a straight drag 0-60. I wanted to prove this but I never got the equipment to record that. So the car rides smoother, it gets better range, and actually faster off the line. Once people discover this it will increase the demand for performance models. Conversely you could create a super long range model Y by getting a long range and swapping the 19’s, though the difference would be small. I am actually considering getting a 255/55/18 wheel next to further increase ride comfort

More sidewall of an 18” tire isn’t why it protects against curb rash. It’s because the tires stick out farther than the rims. More sidewall protects against pothole blowouts.
@EVMANVSGAS
@EVMANVSGAS 3 ай бұрын
Good video and good mileage information. As far as the tire info not so much. You have 245/50R18 tires. The 245=the width of the tires in mm on the ground. The 50 represents the ratio of the side wall to the tire width in %. So 245*50% tells you the height of the sidewall is 122.5mm tall. The front tires on a 2024 performance model y are 255/35R21 so they are 255mm wide and the side wall is 89.25mm tall. This is why so many people want to change from the 21" wheel/tire combo including me, the sidewall is too skinny and easily curb and/or bend the wheel when you hit a pothole. The tires you put on are 1.3" taller in the sidewall and also the tires sticks out farther than the edge of the wheel so it doesn't get curb rash as easy.

The 245 vs 255 in front and 275 in the rear does translate to a sightly lower car. However the performance had a staggered setup, as in a slight cheetah stance where the front is a little lower (255) than the rear (275). I am sure the difference here is negligable

@Adventures_with_nick
@Adventures_with_nick Жыл бұрын
Hi, so the diameter of the wheel only changed 10mm here. I looked this up on a calculator and it effects your speed by 0.95 miles per hour at 70. So going 70 is actually 69.05 miles per hour. This is negligible for the test since I was going 70 and most range tests are for 65 which is a legal speed limit for most highways

Is the speed on a Tesla calibrated by the wheel/tire circumference? A full revolution of a 21" uberturbine wheel (and tire) will measure further distance per revolution of an 18" wheel (and tire). This would totally invalidate the test. The vehicle with the 21" uberturbine wheels may correctly be traveling at 70 mph. While with the 18" wheels, it may look like (via the speedometer) it is traveling at 70 mph, but in reality it is going slower and less distance because 1 revolution of a 18" wheel does not equate to the same distance as 1 revolution of a 21" wheel. This makes the efficiency numbers look better for the 18" wheels.
@Adventures_with_nick
@Adventures_with_nick Жыл бұрын
Hi this is a good point I should have mentioned: the car has been calibrated for a 19” wheel since there is nothing lower preset for the car. The difference between 19” and 18” at highway speeds is 1 mph.
@marklevine9657
@marklevine9657 4 ай бұрын
How are you measuring miles travelled? Are you using map distances and/or GPS? Or are us using the cars odometer? If you're using the cars odometer then you're traveling less distance since your wheel diameter is less than the original tire and the odometer is based on revolutions of the wheel. If the original wheel diameter is 255 and the new wheel diameter is 245mm the distance traveled on the new tires is 3.92% less than on the original tires (using the car's odometer). So if you're using the car's odometer to determine miles traveled then you have to multiply your energy reported by the vehicle by 1.0392. Also your speedometer is showing a speed that is actually 1.0392 greater than your actually traveling.

Exactly! this applies to all vehicles. I believe the physics here is "moment of inertia", less weight on the actual tire and rim means less energy to move the wheel
@thomasbalotte7393
@thomasbalotte7393 Жыл бұрын
He didn't change the OD of the tire, torque and top speed is not affected. What he did here is use a smaller diameter wheel and thus lowered the rotational inertia. What you're talking about is using a smaller wheel AND tire assembly (smaller OD) which essentially lowers the gear ratio which lowers the torque required to accelerate and maintain speed, this is not the case.

Id you did the same thing with the LR model, then it will be even more efficient! Its not only the tires. Its also the motors using less power, the motors are also slightly lighter too on the LR. Suspensions are also softer and could also be cheaper and lighter on LR giving longer range aswell. Of course the biggest effect are tires and its weight
@Adventures_with_nick
@Adventures_with_nick Жыл бұрын
I would love to see someone test that! The 19” wheels on the model y long range are 29 pounds vs a 21 or 22 pound wheel for 18” the difference is just not that significant in comparison to 21” wheels which are 38 and 39 pounds. So I’m not sure exactly how much we would really see as an improvement with that, although it should theoretically be slightly better than the performance, but by how much? 330 miles epa for long range with 19’s but I am doubtful because simply opting for 20’s will lower that to 318 (12 mile difference) and the performance is the only 21” inch wheel option giving you 303 (difference of 15 miles) AND it has higher performance motors. I think wheels are the biggest actual noticeable factor here. It’s right there on their website

@Adventures_with_nick
@Adventures_with_nick Жыл бұрын
I thought that strange too but it’s a different kind of weight called unsprung weight. The weight savings per wheel is big. The uberturbine wheel on the performance is 38 front and 39 rear. The wheels I have are 22 front and 22 back. 2 factors are at play here, drag and energy spent turning the wheel. The lighter wheel means the car spends less energy for every rotation at the source, this is different than passenger weight effects on energy. The numbers speak for itself!

@Adventures_with_nick
@Adventures_with_nick Жыл бұрын
Because spending a little extra for a rim/tire that’s going to almost completely eliminate the possibility of cracking your rim going over a small pot hole while still maintaining (and improving) performance speed is 100000% worth it. Also being able to slightly increase range and comfort comparable to a long range but have it 100% faster. I also think it makes the car look more overlandy, I personally think it’s nicer then the stock rims. The fact that the rim it’s able to carry the payload of the model Y and yet still be lighter makes this a superior wheel, this is in no way shape or form a downgrade.
