It should be noted that Morozevitch is one of the few players who only ever cared about playing inventive, exciting games and never worried about his rating. At his peak, he was number 4 in the world, but he didn't care - instead of defending his ranking by playing more defensively, he took risks and just kept playing interesting games. It's a pity though that due to the decline in his rating, he doesn't get as many invitations anymore. Really one of the most interesting top players out there, jmho.

@Serendipity I stand corrected, I wasn’t aware of that. I guess I must have seen his 4th place ranking around the same time and I just assumed that was the highest he ever reached. Anyway, even then it seemed no player was less concerned with his ranking ever. For Morozevich it is all about playing interesting games.

I believe I saw in an interview with him once, the interviewer asked something like, "So what sparked your passion for chess and inspiration for playing such creative games?" He responded something to close to, "Passion for chess? I hate chess. It's boring. I just happen to be a genius at it. My games are creative because it's the only way I can make such a boring game at least slightly interesting." I've been a huge Moro fan ever since I heard that 😆 I loved that so much. Reminds me of an interview with Elon Musk when he was asked for one piece of advice that he'd give people. He responded, "Listen to criticism." 🤣😆 Moro and Musk. Keeping it real.

@Serendipity briefly even 1st in live rating which is a pity - I would love to have Moro listed as the sixth number one in 90’s and 00’s (next to Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand, Topalov and Carlsen). He would be hands down my favorite player who reached #1 … but he is my favorite player in general anyway 😂

This was a nice game, and your presentation was great as always, but I have to say that I'm really looking forward to your coverage of the 1972 Fischer v. Spassky match. I hope you'll also cover the 1992 rematch. I know both players were somewhat past their prime by then, but I think your appreciation of chess history would make for some fascinating commentary on the many controversies surrounding that event.

A truly awesome book is the 1970 Palma de Mallorca Interzonal tournament book edited by Wade and Blackstock. It had wonderful pictures and every game in the event. I had this book in my youth but no longer. It is a very small paperback with a blue cover. If you can get a copy it would increase your vast knowledge.

7:29 the crucial moment of the game what happens if white plays b3 cutting black's Queen out of the defence followed by Be6? Black's knight is pinned by the rook so black should play ...Ra8xd8 which leads to Qc4+ Ne6; Qxe6+ Ke8; Qf7# What am I missing?

I figured the "crucial move" would have been for white to double up his rooks on the d rank, followed by b3. The b3 pawn would successfully block the queen from protecting the diagonal (if the queen captured on b3 it would immediately be captured by the c2 pawn, which just delays the inevitable white queen to c4 or c5, mating the king.) Of course after b3 Black could do rook captures on d8 which would free the knight to move to d7. While the knight could be captured by the h3 bishop it still would have given black crucial breathing room for his king. This is where the double'd rooks on d1 before b3 comes into play to prevent that. Would have ended the game a lot faster for White with a victory. I may have missed something though. I don't play chess I just watch.

It seems to me that I used to always watch you for a 10 minute chess video, and that was perfect for me. But it seems in the past year or two the videos are longer. Is this on purpose? Do most of your viewers prefer a longer segment?

The other move for 7:32 that will win is pawn to b3. Black now has to find a way to cover the checkmate from bishop to e6 and queen to c4. Checking the white king doesn't help reposition the queen to anywhere helpful so the only move is rook to h7. After queen to c4 with check and king to h8, queen takes bishop on c5 threatening checkmate on f8 and theres no way to stop it.

No. The a8 rook can take the white rook. That is because white sacrifices a tempo while pushing b3.

At the crucial moment, the position at 9:07 why not simply b3? Somebody please explain how black can defend? I feel I am missing something.

My thoughts exactly. But unfortunately it does not work, ...Qa1+, Kd2 (only move), ...Rxd4 + comes with a check, so black gets some tempo (white cannot capture Nxd4, because he would lose a queen)

At 15:00, why didn't black try to free up his game by playing something like Nxg6, followed by pushing the passed h pawn if white recaptures?
