This song was specifically covered for this scene. It's to pay homage to the character- seasons 1's ending/ Seasons 3's!

Imogen mentioned this in her recent 'Ask Me Anything' session on Reddit. She explained that she originally turned down the request to record it for the OC because she didn't have time to do it, but then she had the idea of doing it a cappella (i.e. voice only), which was much quicker than doing it with instruments!

This song never gets old! I was 12 years old when I first heard this/ watched the The OC season 3 ending. This is by far the best cover- Jeff Buckley's a firm second. I am 29 years old and I'm still in disbelief that Mischa Barton's character Marissa Cooper died by that road side.. what an emotional scene and I think personally, it's the best tv- death scene as of yet! What a lot of people aren't understanding is that it's SUPPOSED to be emotionless. The point of it is to put your own emotion to it. It can be sad, it can be angry... it can even be happy if you want it to be. It's emotionless, and haunting, so you can experience the song in whatever way you desire. That's what I love so much about this song. It doesn't MAKE you feel something. It allows you to feel whichever way you choose to.
