Lyrics:
Well I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah...
Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you toher kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

My son was 38 when he introduced me to Jeff Buckley's beautiful rendition of Hallelujah. He told me of how Buckley passed and how it made him feel. Three months later he died in a terrible accident in much the same way. I come here occasionally to remember him.

My wife was pregnant with our twin girls and during all the pregnancy there were many doubts about the health of the babies. At 36 weeks, after 2 days in the hospital, at midnight, my wife gave birth to 2 perfect babies. The day after I was with them in the hospital all day, barely went to the bathroom, didn't even eat. At night when I got in the car to go home this was the music playing, had to stop the car at the side of the road and cry my heart out...

🥹 damn. That’s exactly! What happened to me. We’ll sort of, my wife was in labor and I just got off at work at 1am and drove to the hospital with my earphones in, the wired ones 😂 and this song came on my shuffle as I ran so goddamn fast from the parking lot to the room. The nurses just said go go go follow the screams 😂. And walked in there and bam baby girl came out. It was like a freaking movie scene to me. I never ran so damn fast in my life. Hope those kids bring joy in life my friend.

The hardest thing I had to deal with was losing my baby brother, who also took his own life. Took at least 3 years to have some kind of feeling of “normal” again. The ironic part is that it teaches you how powerful and deep your love for a brother can be, after they are gone from your life...

Whoever reads this... I hope you find happiness, and love and learn to forgive and forget. Our lives are so short... please try to be happy as much as you can: in a butterfly, in the way the sun warms up your face, the way a small child smiles back at you at the supermarket queue, a hug from a friend. Please do not take them from granted. Ever. I miss you, Jeff, you'll never be forgotten. By millions. Sincerely, a struggling Argentinian English professor. (16/3/24)

Whomever needs to hear this: You are beloved. What a weird yet fantastic life we live! Somebody, somewhere is better off having known you. Life is a tenuous string that we have little to no control of. If you have listened to this heavenly rendition then your life has been worth something. Jeff was utterly unique and brilliant. Listen to music and turn it up LOUD. Kiss your partner, tell your siblings and parents that you love them. We are only here for an annoyingly short space of time - it's important that you tell them all how you feel. I wish you all good fortune and that you continue to listen to top-drawer music like this for the rest of your lives. Educate your children with these immaculately beautiful songs. Peace and love ❤

Father God stills loves you and Wants you back , even though your Faith has been and is being Tested . Hold on To God and His undying Love for you , you will Be Glad you did in the End My Brother. In an interview with Jeff in 1994, which sheds light on what truly influenced him musically, he says: "Words are really beautiful, but they’re limited. Words are very male, very structured. But the voice is the netherworld, the darkness, where there’s nothing to hang onto. The voice comes from a part of you that just knows and expresses and is. I need to inhabit every bit of lyric, or else I can’t bring the song to you-or else it’s just words.’”

Vulnerability is not a victory march, it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah. When we're brave with our hearts - when we have the courage to love and hope, to try, fail, and try again - the result of our daring isn't a victory march as much as it is a quiet sense of liberation mixed with a little battle fatigue

Fighting cancer so I can stick around for my 5 kiddos. After every treatment when I feel like I have no more fight left in my tired pain racked body, when all I can do is lay and my soul aches for release…I play this song again and again until it leads me back to my inner strength. And I keep fighting. Love is not a victory march, sometimes it is fucking HARD, sometimes it’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah.

I'm posting the lyrics, so when someone hears this for the first time, they'll know the words ♡ I heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? Well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth The minor fall and the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Well your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to her kitchen chair She broke your throne and she cut your hair And from your lips, she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Baby, I've been here before I've seen this room and I've walked this floor You know, I used to live alone before I knew you And I've seen your flag on the marble arch And Love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Well, there was a time when you let me know What's really going on below But now you never show that to me, do you? But remember, when I moved in you And the holy dove was moving too And every breath, we drew was Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Maybe there's a God above But, all I've ever learned from love Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you? And it's not a cry, that you hear at night It's not somebody, who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

For all my youngsters reading please listen. I've searched for years to be able to explain the feelings of watching yourself and someone else fall in love. From the mesmerizing beginning to the learning of each other's ways to the small debates becoming larger arguments to slowly watching the person that means more to you than the world itself fall out of love with you. A pain you can't sleep off, a hurt that never goes away, a pit that no matter what you put in it it never fills. This song......my God this song. This song along with Jeff's breath taking performance is the closest you can get to experience without experience. I come here to cry. Don't be me. Live, love, hold on, and cherish. This world today makes fuckin up seem cool. It's not. It'll just make you another fool coming to this song to cry

Absolutely! I'm a chronic overthinker and always have been. It allows me to be insightful and very aware of myself and the life around me, but it also causes me to be anxious, indecisive and overly critical of myself. The concept "you are your own worst critic" is especially difficult when you're the type who always delves so deep into all of your thoughts...

Lyrics Well I heard there was a secret chord That David played and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? Well it goes like this: the fourth, the fifth The minor fall and the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah [x4] Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to her kitchen chair She broke your throne and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah [x4] Baby I've been here before I've seen this room and I've walked this floor (you know) I used to live alone before I knew you And I've seen your flag on the marble arch And love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah [x4] There was a time when you let me know What's really going on below But now you never show that to me, do you? But remember when I moved in you And the holy dove was moving too And every breath we drew was Hallelujah Hallelujah [x4] Maybe there's a God above All I've ever learned from love Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you And it's not a cry that you hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah [x13]

I've been kicked hard by life. Lost my dad when I was nine. Got institutionalized in my teens by my mom because she didn't want to raise me anymore. Fought my way out of that hell into my first apartment when I was 18, against medical advice, and thrived. Got my social worker dismissed before my 20th birthday. Lost my first love when schizophrenia turned her into a shell of herself, as gone to me as if she'd died in my arms. I did OK in my 20s. Knocked around a lot. Worked as a casino wiseguy, a freelance writer, cheap, dead-end jobs, got married at 27... ...but the demons were just setting me up for some even harder knocks. Got divorced at 32. Turns out I make a terrible husband because I'm too broken to be able to handle someone else. She left because I was 'emotionally unavailable' and I had absolutely nothing to counter the argument. Then the Great Recession happened and I ended up homeless. Didn't matter. Fought my way off the street. I'd been through worse, honestly. Homelessness was playing with house money, but "house money" was what I was earning. You haven't learned what true appreciation is until you've been without your own toilet to take a dump in and you finally get that most basic of human privileges back. Keeping the place, now that was a whole new set of challenges. Worked a job with a two-hour commute and garbage pay that made me seriously think that I was going to break. I was at a point where I'd rather be on the street than working that job...hell, death didn't even sound like a bad alternative. And just when I came out of that-quit the job, went full-time freelance again-I had a heart attack. Before I went in for surgery, I finished an article I'd been working on because no way was I going to my grave having missed a deadline, said "if I don't come out of this, just remember to play The Ecstasy of Gold as you light the barge to send me to meet the gods"...and survived. I was 38. And somehow that last reprieve finally turned the corner. I'll be 45 next month. I'm working a fantastic job with great co-workers and a boss who used the word "ecstatic" at my last review. And there are two songs that truly capture the feeling of how grateful I am to have been blessed with whatever weird survivor gene is in my DNA. One is "Leader of the Band" by Dan Fogelberg, a song that belongs to my father. The other is this song. You can only get so far on "my life's pretty bad but at least I'm not this guy"...but if I can claw my way through hell and back, I hope like hell it inspires someone else. Hallelujah.

Just a personal story of this song to share: several years ago I had the privilege of climbing Kilimanjaro. The summit day started with an 8-hour trudge up shale on the crater rim in the pitch dark and cold, with no sense of progression and every sinew craving to give up. Suddenly, from nowhere, the porters (local lads carrying loads) in our group and others starting singing this song. We all joined in. To my death, I will always remember the progression of torch lights in the dark, each representing a personal battle, to the harmony of this song sung with passion by normal folk in an abnormal situation.

This isn’t a vocal ballad that people have turned it into. It’s a beautifully poetic, brutally raw depiction of what love is. Love ain’t flowers and things. It’s hard work and has no place for selfishness.

You get to put away the stoicism, the macho personality, the bravado, and you allow yourself to purge, as you stated so eloquently. You stop posing, pretending everything is alright, for just a few hours. And it gives you strength, a renewed purpose perhaps, to push through another stretch. And for anyone that's quick to judge, it's no different than reaching for a bottle, or trying to find solace at the bottom of a baggie, prescription vial, romantic partner, etc. 2020 will forever be engraved in our memories for obvious, painful reasons, but for some, this was just another shyte fuckin' year. Peace and strength be within you all.

It's truly the most beautiful rendition of the song. Especially because of the ligh tning. The idea with the lightning shows the true nature of the song; the dark and the light. Love is not all light it encompasses all...the dark and the light. I think this song is misinterpreted often. It's about seeing the good and bad and marching on.
