The Back and forth in the courtyard when John Blackthorne is finally able to let Toranaga and his men know what the Portuguese have been up to this entire time was stunning. Edge of your seat type of feeling with any action. Amazing

I REALLY love that scene of the big reveal of their three-way conversation in the zen garden - it was full of tension and anticipation, and alarm! The writing is wonderful, as is every aspect of this show! A game of chess, with the most serious of consequences! Love hearing your thoughts and appreciate your obvious enjoyment!

Blackthorn's claims are based on the real life Treaties of Torsedillas (1494) and Zaragoza (1524) which still served to define the principle spheres of influence between Spain and Portugal at the time Blackthorn reaches Japan. The Japanese power elite mostly viewed the "Southern Barbarians" as convenient trading partners who served as middlemen between Japan and China, as those two powers weren't on friendly terms especially after the (repelled) Japanese invasion of Korea a few years prior to Blackthorn's arrival. The realization that European nations weren't just curiosities and trade partners but also aggressive imperialists eventually shifted Japanese attitudes towards more isolationist policies (among other reasons).

they viewed Portuguese and Spanish as barbarians bcz they came to Japan from its southern route where Japan dealt for barbarians for centuries but the Dutch and William Adams (John Blackthorne) came from east so they were not viewed as barbarians they were called red haired people and after isolation not all European or any other foreign power isolated only the Dutch were allowed thanks to relationship William Adams built

My understanding of it was that the barbarian title was mostly due to how European men groomed themselves, as having such long beards and loose flowing hair wasn't seen as civilized. Truthfully though in every other area, technology, society, weapons and armor, shipbuilding, the Japanese were far behind Europe. Europeans however, to my knowledge at least never thought of the Japanese as barbarians. Albeit they were seen as strange culturally of course, which was a mutual sentiment.

@@alexanderb5726 they had vaccine way before us they used to scrape small pocks and drink it for immunity. And swords, art prints etc China invented more but Japan contributed. They were so nomadic they be the firdt build a boat or put up neolithic stones mapping areas. The east laid the foundation the west carried it in as it had the most resources

Also, I read the original Shogun by James Clavell when I was young, its a work of fiction, but a lot of the things covered in this drama did occur, just not necessarily in this chronology, and all the names have been changed. Also, the scene where they boiled Blackthorne's seaman alive, Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi actually boiled his childhood friend Ishikawa Goemon alive.

Of note, for context: boiling people alive was used as a method of execution around the world, including england at that time

1494 Treaty of Tordesillas 1521 Magellan arrived in the Philippines 1529 Treaty of Zaragoza (Saragossa) These treaties defined the limits of westward Spanish exploration and the eastern ventures of Portugal. The two states acting as the vanguard of the expansion of Europe had thus divided the newly discovered sea lanes of the world between them. They came to an agreement that the Philippines became a Spanish possession. 1543 Arrival of the Portuguese, the first Westerners in Japan, and the Introduction of guns 1549 Arrival of the Jesuits

1596 San Felipe incident On October 19, 1596, the Spanish ship San Felipe was shipwrecked on Urado in Kōchi en route from Manila to Acapulco in the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade. The local daimyō Chōsokabe Motochika that ruled Tosa province seized the cargo of the richly laden Manila galleon, and the incident escalated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ruling Taikō of Japan. The pilot of the ship suggested to Japanese authorities that it was Spanish modus operandi to have missionaries infiltrate a country before an eventual military conquest, as had been done in the Americas and the Philippines. This led to the crucifixion of 26 Catholics in Nagasaki. Six Spanish Franciscan missionaries and 20 Japanese Catholics were captured in Osaka and Kyoto, and sent to Nagasaki where they were executed on February 5, 1597.

These events, and others that happened later, led to the expulsion of Portugal and Spain from Japan, and the Tokugawa Shogunate, established in 1603, limited entry into Japan to the Protestant Netherlands, which promised not to propagate Christianity in Japan, and the Qing Dynasty. Japan still was trading with Portugal and Spain through Southeast Asia such as Macao and Manila. 1624 Ban on Spanish ships coming to Japan 1639 Ban on Portuguese ships

Great reaction. The intrigue just keeps getting deeper, with everyone’s motivations becoming more revealed and intricate. It looks like Toranaga is now playing chess, while the regents are playing checkers. Amazing show!

Sorry this is a bit long Blackthorn has the gift of tongues. He speaks Dutch to his crew, Portuguese to the priests and Mariko (in the books he also speaks Latin to her), Japanese to the samurai (though poorly) and Spanish to the Friar in the prison (in the book). He sometimes speaks English when there is no one around him who understands any of the languages he speaks. What I'm enjoying is the fact that we are getting more of the political side of the story, which they were not able to do with the original mini series. Reading subtitles back in the early 80's was generally an arthouse film thing for the big screen. Audiences are more accustom to reading subtitles on TVs now than they were back in the day. Also helps that TV screens are so much more massive and better than they were back then. The book seemed like it was a staple on every parents or grandparents bookshelf. As someone who obsessed on both the original mini series (I was 9 when it first came out) and then the book, I'm loving what they have done so far.

I love that you pointed out immediately that the Padre would take advantage of Mariko’s confession, and one of the lords became Catholic because of his illness. No other reactors that I have watched did. 👍 The Jesuits (Catholics) took advantage of human weakness to increase their followers and grow in power. Like people who have lost their loved ones (Mariko), who were with incurable diseases (Ono), who were greedy for power and wealth (Kiyama), etc. Also, Confession is very dangerous. They will know your weaknesses and privacy that you want to keep private.

I'm not quite sure where you are getting that information about a priests, Jesuits or otherwise, betraying the seal of confession. It was established in The Fourth Council of the Lateran in 1215 with canon 21. The penalty was and still is to this day excommunication. Jesuits were one order among several of the Catholic Church. Most bishops were not Jesuits, and if a bishop was informed that Jesuit priests betray the seal of confession, the priests would be excommunicated by the Bishop. Now, you could state that since the Jesuits were in control of the missions in Asia, they could get away with it; however, that doesn't make sense because the Franciscans, another order (the priest sharing the cell with Blackthorne) would report them and evenly get back to the hierarchy including the Pope. Moreover, the implication is that every single Jesuit was corrupt and is not a true believer. It would take a lot for a Jesuit priest to knowingly commit such an egregious sin that will damage his soul and condemn him to hell. Missionaries were especially dedicated to their faith. Watch the move "Silence" to give you an idea of how much it takes to break one of these men to betray their beliefs. By the way I'm an atheist, and it seems you have sectarian glasses on by claiming that Catholics were how you describe them. What do you think the Anglican Church, the Lutherans, the Presbyterians of this time period were doing? Granted that the Dutch separated their economic dealings from their religious ones.

Commenting to boost the algorithm because I feel a little bad for stirring up a little debate on your first one. Another great catch with Toranaga testing both Blackthorn and the Catholics. Regarding history, it really is fascinating. A good starting point might be Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast. They're long form podcasts that are captivating, easily digestible and very informative. From there, there's a ton of various resources that tackle history from very different perspectives.

They've really trimmed down the book dialogue, but I'm pleased with some of the things they've left. Ishido talks about displaying the 'dog-faced freak from the west' throughout the Empire. Typically of Ishido, this is a veiled insult to Toranaga, who is from the west of Japan. Ishido is constantly testing the bounds of what is polite, trying to sting Toranaga into doing something that he, Ishido, could punish him for. This is much later than the Crusades: Constantinople fell 150 years ago, the Ottoman Empire is (arguably) beginning to decline from the peak of it's power and Elizabeth I is queen of England, in her 60s.

So you're right, in real history, after this civil war that we're essentially experiencing in the show, the Tokugawa Shogunate(Real version of Toranaga in the show) majorly cracked down on Catholism and essentially outlawed it. So that happend right after the events that we're witnessing in the show.

Such a good series. I love Japans history they had vaccines before everyone they used to scrape small pocks and injest it so did Egyptians to get immunity. We only leart this in the uk when milk maids would be immune because of the milk from infected cows 1000 s of years later tho i think religion destroyed alot of facts about medicine to control it use bit like pharma now. But they were are so wize and interesting like China. I think they were getting gun powder from China i know the English did. The Pilot is based on a real English man that ended up in Japan in the early 1600s The

One of the things that takes me out of the series is that you can tell it isn't filmed in Japan. I put it aside while watching, but it is still distracting. Although I understand why they chose to film in Canada and New Zealand, I wish they filmed the series in Japan. I've been living in Japan for over a decade, so I know something about what I'm stating.
