The series is based on the 1975 novel "Shogun" by James Clavell. Ironically, Clavell survived WW2 in Japanese POW camp after being shot in the face. It's a phenomenal book. It's one of six books in his Asian Saga. Shogun is inspired by the crazy true life of first Englishman to Japan the navigator William Adams.

I'd be so annoyed if I got shot in the face. I would definitely lodge a complaint with the camp office and demand compensation.

This is one of the shows that you can tell the producers *really* cared, which feels rare in this day and age. Honestly think this show might be my favourite in years so far

The main producer of this show is the actor himself who plays Yoshi Toranaga, and that's Hiroyuki Sanada! He has most notably acted in The Last Samurai (that's where most of his well-deserved recognition originates from), and as Scorpion in Mortal Kombat (2021)

Great reaction and glad you’re doing this show. One of the best I’ve seen on TV. I understand that the producers and director did an incredible amount of research and attention in making this as historically accurate as they could - costumes, culture, language, behavior. All pretty accurate to feudal Japan.

I just hope they already finished shooting the whole series because some idjits in the US are complaining why there aren't any black Samurai.

Glad you're watching this Imon. This show is awesome as it explores an under-covered part of history and fairly well follows real historical events. Thing is though, already at the close of the 1500's there had been Japanese embassies, Christian ones who made pilgrimages to Europe to see the cities and pay homage to the Pope, like the Tensho Embassy of the 1580's. There are detailed diaries of those who traveled, talking about the long sailing trip there, being awestruck by the architecture and technology of European cities, inquiring about how parlimentary democracy works in England etc. It's fascinating. During this period, Spain is the most powerful force on earth with the largest empire, and Portugal has the greatest fleet (the English are sort of on the rise but haven't yet developed their royal navy fully) and Japan is very behind technologically and culturally speaking, still residing in feudal times. It was the portugese who first introduced firearms to the Japanese who quickly took to mass producing it for their militia. European fashion and armor was also popular due to steel plated armor not being a thing in Japan yet. And European shipbuilding of course was the best in the world, so trade was lucractive for both parties, but you're right, there is a huge shift to isolation and condemning of foreign influence in Japan, but it does not occur yet in this period.

You're the first reactor I've seen pick up on the Kiri/Yabushige scene. It shows why she is an excellent Courtesan. From the small conversation she figured out he would rather watch than participate. Something Yabushige didn't even realize until she asked if she should stop. This story holds a prominent place in the heart of many people because the book and the 80's miniseries introduced Western audiences to Japanese culture for the first time. Now that the West is far more familiar with Japanese culture, they are able to tell the story from a more Japanese Centric Lens. It does a good job of showing how in many ways the cultures are mirror images of each other. A lesson I think many of this current generation need to learn. Due to our Eurocentrism, many fall into a self loathing pattern seeing Europeans as the singular "Evil Colonizers" when in reality that's how every culture acted. The Japanese had recently attempted to invade and colonize Korea and failed. This is why China cut off Trade, which gave the Portuguese a monopoly; trading Japanese silver for Chinese silk. You can tell from the start this was made with passion for all the right things and I'm convinced we're witnessing yet another great retelling of this story.

Did Japan invade and colonize Korea? I'll ask you then. Why did Korea, which was a colony, receive preferential treatment than Japan itself, build a national university, make education compulsory and eliminate illiteracy, expand farmland, industrialize, improve infrastructure, improve medical care, and appoint Koreans as generals and members of the Diet? The population increased explosively as a result of bringing in Japanese money, improving the discriminatory system, freeing slaves, and carrying out all of these various reforms, but in the West, this was seen as an invasion or colony. Do you call it that? I'm not saying that everything in Japan was just. We should be a little suspicious of the propaganda of the West, Korea, China, Russia, etc., who just want to shift all responsibility for the war onto Japan while turning a blind eye to the atomic bombing and the massacre of civilians.
@Orapac-ln5jd
@Orapac-ln5jd 3 ай бұрын
@kanshimajiri5341 lmfao yes they did. Also this is in the 1600s not the 1900s, Japan attacked Korea more than once in history. They even talk about it in the show, many ofvthe characters fought in Korea.
@kanshimajiri5341
@kanshimajiri5341 3 ай бұрын
@@Orapac-ln5jd Thank you for your understanding regarding the annexation of Japan and Korea. Now, talking about the era of the drama, it is true that they fought in Korea, but Korea was just a route to fight against China, and there was no intention of making Korea their own at that time, and the samurai fought in Korea. There was no plunder or massacre of the people of Korea, and Korea remained a vassal state of successive Chinese dynasties for thousands of years until it was annexed by Japan, and was a land where no culture developed at all. For this reason, Korean craftsmen who came to Japan as prisoners of war refused to return to Japan due to the culture of treating Japanese craftsmen with high treatment and respect, and even today, hundreds of years later, their descendants, as Korean-Japanese, are respected in Japanese culture. It is a reality that we live together. As a side note, in Japan, lying or being dishonest is considered a shame, and sometimes even death, as seen in the drama. But in China and Korea, lying is completely justified. ``Tell a lie like you breathe'' is a phrase that is synonymous with them in Japan.

@@kanshimajiri5341 I'm not attempting to shift blame of any war. My point was that the self loathing sentiment of many modern Westerners that see The West as a singular "Evil Colonizer" is itself a Eurocentric vision of history. Expansion and Colonization is how ALL civilization acted at the time. Japan invaded the mainland, The Mongols colonized China and attempted to invade Japan twice. The Ottoman Muslims expanded and colonized westward. The fact that, in the show, both The Japanese and the Europeans see each other as uncivilized barbarians illustrates that that sentiment was universal and not limited to just one side.

Imom, what a change. Nice new hair style. Glad you’re jumping into Shogun which has been even better than I had hoped & imagined. Just starting your reaction but I already know you’re going to love it. A lot of recent tv has been underwhelming but not Shogun. They had big shoes to fill with this one. It is a beloved book but also culturally important as it was one piece of artistic literary work that helped introduce more Japanese culture & Japanese history to Western audiences. Japan had historically been an insular country & until modern times it remains a somewhat enigmatic country & culture. The TV show was a groundbreaking hit that also influenced UA audiences with Japanese culture. Now household brands & Japanese culture are widespread but it really wasn’t the case until a few decades back. Now we see Sony, Honda, karate, karaoke, sushi, etc everywhere. Shogun was one of the first big budget big named actor huge tv miniseries that had an influence on these tv mini series shows that had the scope of a movie &!breadth of a large novel. So this remake had to at least meet the bar of the influential classic 1980 Shogun miniseries while also being faithful to historical accuracy. And it’s even better than I expected or could have imagined. It’s beautiful & the actors are really killing it. The cinematography to the sets to the costumes to the faithful historical accuracy are all top notch. Now the aesthetics & stuff are all well & good but matter not unless it’s entertaining & intriguing, which it is. It’s so good. Now I am a born & bred New Yorker to the bone but has a lot of Japanese culture in my household due to my Japanese mother. I learned a lot about Japanese history from Shogun & it piqued my interest into more Japanese culture too which was one of the profound effects of the book & old miniseries. So it has actual cultural & societal importance & impact. They had a high bar to at least meet in remaking this & they didn’t disappoint. For many US audience members they are figure Blackthorns getting immersed heading into this unknown foreign & different world. This is part of the intrigue & mystery of it. Anyway, looking forward to your reaction. Yeah you mentioned how watching a live show kist getting released is not your norm. It’s nice to have an older show where all the episodes are out which you can kust binge. The bummer here is having to wait a week for the next one.☹️ Luckily they spoiled us with an initial double episode release. But man, it’s so good that waiting is rough. 🫤 Again, I already know you’re going to dig it. Post reaction watching edit: Damn Imom you picked up & extrapolated a lot of the dynamics of this very complex plot that is laden with a lot of politics, intruige & mystery.🙂👍

So it is practically a remake of the 80s-mini-series which stared Richard Chamberlain, Toshiro Mifune and John Rhys-Davies who later on became Gimli in the Lord Of The Rings - trilogy? Got to check that out as well.

This series attempts to be closer to the novel. I loved the original miniseries, for its time it was truly epic. This series not only gives us a more in depth look into Edo feudalist history, but also tries to be as historically accurate as possible, from costumes, to sets, to language, to the way people walk, move, and even sit. It’s a labor of love for the Japanese crew involved, and this attention to detail really makes this world come to life in a way we haven’t seen in western productions of similar historical dramas.

@@ennuieffect You are right to point out it isn't a remake of the 80s mini-series. It's a direct adaption of the novel. A correction for you, the story doesn't take place during the Edo Period. The period the novel and both the 80s mini-series and this adaption takes place in is at the end of the Warring States Period (sengoku jidai [戦国時代]). The Edo Period begins at the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Just a slight correction, Ishido & the other regents aren't just finding random reasons. They know Toranaga is a calculated man, he doesn't just do anything for any reason. So they noticed that he took wives (he has 6 now) & that massively expanded his fief & his powers/influence...why do you need more wives? Land? People (for an army, perhaps)? They think he's making a power move...& are they wrong?

By the time the show takes place (1600), the Portuguese have been in Japan for almost 60 years. In that time, there has been enough for both sides to not only learn the languages, but also for conversion to Catholicism. The two faction leaders that are Catholic are followers for their own reasons, one for greed and power, the other for possible salvation from being a leper.
