It feels like everyone knows what Impact Frames are, but no one really knows anything about them. This video aims to change that.

Fantastic. Now that anime is more popular than ever, I feel like there needs to be more documentary style videos about its production, animation, directorial styles etc. They used to exist before too but were confined to blog posts or KZfaq channels catering to a very niche audience at the time. I'm not an animator, nor do I plan to be one, but I still find myself watching these kinds of videos more than the highly subjective, heavily opinionated videos about the popular seasonal anime. Thank you so much for your effort.

Impact frames are SO fun to make. thank you for covering them. as an animator, i feel restrained by needing to make my work "easier to read" for people who don't usually watch faced paced action. It's videos like this, that help even more people become (for lack of a better term) "Sakuga-literate" and give me the freedom to create work that can be appreciated in that way.

Hey, thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. One thing I tried to accomplish with this video is to make it a useful resource for the industry professional and a guide to help the casual viewer appreciate this visual art form more deeply, so the fact that you think it achieves that goal is a huge W in my book! Thanks again.

have you seen any of Vincent Chansard's impact frames? His impact frames are known for their overexaggeration and being able to tell stories through them. His frames for One Piece 1062 were so good they went viral on tiktok and people who had no idea what impact frames are were watching it frame by frame. In general, 1062 was the best animated episode of anime in the past few years especially the last scenes with key animation by Vincent Chansard and Chris Yen. Safe to say you have to catch up to One Piece

This is a really well done video! I like your classifications and how you then later analyzed the anime scenes based on those classifications. It's also very well researched. I'm currently writing my bachelor thesis in animation (about 3D styles that take inspiration from 2D animation), and one small section was about impact frames. I originally didn't intend to watch the entire 40 minutes since it is just a small section, but your video and your way of presenting was just so interesting that I couldn't help but be engrossed and watch all of it. The level of research and redaction behind video in order to make this subject easily understandable while being extraordinarily vast is admirable. So congrats for making such high quality videos like that. @@DrewMalou just finished. Wow, so many things I want to say about it. First off, hell of a video. I know I said the A Silent Voice video was your best yet, but this might just surpass it. Writing, music, visuals, editing all on point. Each adding so much without drowning out the others. All together creating a “story” that we follow with natural transitions through each section of the video. Second, I’m so glad you chose the Deku v Todoroki fight to showcase a masterpiece of impact frames. I remember physically gasping when I saw that for the first time. It’s says so much without a single word being spoken. In a few seconds we see Todoroki’s true power, not just unshackled by the limits he’s placed on himself, but also the strength of his conviction that Deku has ignited. Love it. Lastly, choice clips in this. Everything from the modern greats, old school classics, hidden gems to KZfaq animations. My list of things to watch just got a whole lot longer. I could say so much more but I’ll keep it relatively short. Keep it up, you’re killing it.

This is crazy you made this video. I tried to research impact frames myself over a year ago and yea i could barely find anything. Only reason i even started was because i heard the term for the first time in the berserk manga subreddit. Then after really falling in love with it while watching one punch man i had to learn more. Thanks for posting this video!! Kinda seems like overnight impact frames has had a cultural boom. Going so far that a popular anime One Piece is hiding easter eggs in impact frames knowing ppl will analyze and find them and impact frames has therefor become a popular topic of discussion

It's amazing to see someone doing a deep dive on this beautiful and beloved, yet oddly obscure topic. I find the truth behind how animation works is often only understood by professional animators! I myself am getting certified as one VIA a private college. This video helps add to yet another facet of information I want stored.

You’ve got no idea how hard it is for me to explain to someone what an impact frame is. I love them. I try to put them anywhere I can. They are the frames I put the most love and care on. But goddamn it’s so hard to find anything relevant to their history, techniques, classification and just about anything about them. I thank you so much for this video. I just went back to my animations and realized that almost all of the impact frames I’ve made are inside the categories you laid out. Mainly I think I do colored threshold and a mix of colored shockwave and hyperstyle impact frames. I only found 3 or 4 that I cannot classify properly. I don’t have every single animation posted in my channel, but I’ll try doing a quick video with every instance I have to have people see it if they are interested! I appreciate this a ton. Thank you so so much!

Wow, thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and yes, I have no idea why it is so hard to find info on impact frames. Thank you for the kind words, and for watching!

I think the reason is because they are a niche tool in animation, and come to think of it, most expert material isn’t easy to find. At some point you stop learning form reading and practice and go by the critiques of your seniors and studying cuts. There’s little written books on animation and the ones that are cover the 12 principles, not specialized techniques.
@DrewMalou
@DrewMalou 8 ай бұрын
That's a great point! Speaking of which, I definitely need to read some of those books on the 12 principles. I want to make some videos discussing those topics as well! But the specialized techniques and the "expert material" is an interesting idea. I think you're right, at that point it's all just the senior animators who are giving you feedback on what works and what needs changing.
