This Imperial 66 typewriter manufactured in the late 1950s arrived here having been rescued from the rubbish dump and was in poor cosmetic condition. I thought it would make a parts machine at best. However, with a considerable amount of cleaning and other work, I managed not only to get it to work again, but to work well.
The Imperial 66 is a standard (desktop) typewriter with detachable carriage and removable type unit. It was manufactured in Leicester, England. It is a heavy beast, but its quality of manufacture means that it was able to withstand the ravages of time.
I flushed the segment and the type bars, cleaned the type slugs, wiped the key tops clean, restored the carriage to the body, reattached the drawband hook, rewound the mainspring, straightened the paper support, cleaned the body and the rubber feet and polished some of the chrome parts.
Now, the typewriter is working brilliantly, and I am thrilled because although I collect typewriters, I would never have considered myself a restorer. It's a wonderful thing to be able to use a typewriter again that seemed beyond recovery. Yes, it has seen better days, but now perhaps it can produce its best work - not bad for a machine that's over 60 years old.

Congratulations! Job well done, indeed! This is why I love the big typewriters, a little rust just doesn't bother them....they just keep on typing! ❤

Thanks Susan. Yes, this old beast was not deterred by a bit of rust and some jammed up type bars!

Thanks Paulo! Since making the video, I have done some further cleaning and have been using the typewriter every day. It's a real beauty, and a great performer. So glad to have saved it and given it a new lease of life!

You did a wonderful job of cleaning and making it work so well again. I loved the sound of it when typing. Thanks! Daniel

Thanks Daniel! I am still cleaning it. Today, I worked on polishing the chrome surfaces, some of which were dirty and a tiny bit rusty. I also flushed the segment again, this time with cellulose thinner. And I worked on cleaning some of the grime off the linkage bars directly under the keys because they were very grimy. There is some surface rust in places, but thankfully nothing that will cause any problem, for which I am glad. It's a real beauty to type on. I suddenly have a new favouite!

Wow! What a wonderful rescue. I think that machine looks beautiful, scars and all. Have you allowed yourself to fantasize about who would have used it? The impression looks very good to me. Thank you for sharing this.

I saw one of these yesterday in one of my local second hand shops for €40. Ill go in tomorrow morning to see if its still there (I doubt it). I'm coveting it now 😁. If its gone I hope whoever bought it enjoys it! I really enjoyed typing class in secondary school during the 80s. Started off on manual and ended up in 89 on electric ... much prefer manual. Nothing like a roomfull of clickedy clack typing at full belt. Thanks for the video and for saving this machine 👍

@@mythicalireland Got it! A few keys a bit sticky but I'll watch a few KZfaq videos and I'm sure it'll be fine ... then I'll let my fingers have a trip (or should I say 'click') down memory lane 😁 Thanks again for the upload 👍

@@theeggtimertictic1136 Fantastic! Welcome to the club! Is it exactly the same as mine - the Imperial 66?

@@mythicalireland Almost. It's dark grey with lighter grey keys and bottle green shift keys and imperial label. Not in as good shape but I love it. It's from 12 Parliment street Dublin. There's a Greek restaurant there now ... I Google mapped it 😂

Just picked up a barn find one for restoration. The case has a lot of rust on it. You think it would be sacrilege to re-paint it in dark red, as think it would look good like that, but not origional colour?

Repaint the case? Go on, do it! Geren at Hotrod Typewriters does fantastic repaints. Anything to restore a typewriter and bring it back to use is good in my book!

Can you tell me what you mean please when you say that you "flushed" the segment? 5:04. Thank you.
