Yes! The S98/05 is my favorite bayonet of all time. That leaf shaped blade is very aesthetically pleasing and it seems to be a good tool too. Glad you are feeling better and gave us another great episode.

We found this in my grandfather's house after he died, it was covered in thick rust, I tried to clean it up, there's no markings on it due to the corrosion and clean up process, it's the one without the metal on the handle to protect against the flash, so probably the older model. It's incredible how light and nimble it is, I can wave it around very fast like it's nothing, amazing shit.

If you shop on EBAY for bayonets, you will see more variations of this fine bayonet for sale. It is a strong blade, the early scabbard was leather with steel fittings. After 1915, all steel scabbards were issued. That combo is heavy. When you see the WWI videos on U-Tube, you can see how they sag! The flash gaurds were added with the new model, or Neuer Art (N/A) so when used on the Kar98A, the grips won't burn off from flash of fire!

Hi! Any chance you will do a video on the post-war 98/05's? I have what I'm told is a "Police" bayonet. "1920" marked with no imperial proofs or year on back of the blade, just manufacturer. Bayonet is blued with 1920 on cross guard. Great video! Thanks!

Hello Richard. Thank you for your comment. There were many manufacturers when it comes to the S98/05 new pattern. A total of 39 companies (maybe even more) manufactured the S98/05 new pattern bayonet from 1915 until 1918. Collecting all the different manufacturers really is quite a challenge.

Hi! I was wondering a bit about something in the video. I have a 98/05 sawback by Alex Coppel with the blade marked with the Ludwig mark over "14". The handle sports the short ears and metal flashguard that you mentioned were introduced from 1915 onwards. I was wondering if they ever replaced the handles on some of the previously issued blades with the newer pattern. I'm hoping that the handle wasn't replaced by somebody else with a handle from a different 98/05.
@imperialgermanbayonets9244
@imperialgermanbayonets9244 3 жыл бұрын
No, its perfectly fine that your S98/05 does show features of both the old and new pattern. They sometimes "updated" older 97/05 bayonets by grinding down the ears and adding a flashguard.

(Type of metal, material I should use to restore get rid of surface rust, etc) I do not have a crown, only markings are (HM?)UNDLOS&CO MAGDEBURG and on other side GEBR. HARTKOPF SOLINGEN. The crown I think and W 17? Is on back side.. I was going to use naval jelly to remove some of the rust areas, started on the sheath but quickly realized it may damage or stain and I want to respect this thing, restore it and admire it for the rest of my life. Still watching full video and you may cover it, but mentioning ahead of time.

Hello Vincent ( Imperial German Bayonets), I have a J.H.BECKER SOLINGEN with the sawback removed, It has no year marking on the spine, only a crown with a number 3 under it? And it has an "i" where the sawback was removed. Could you help me with dating this bayonet since it has no spine number? Thank you. - David
@imperialgermanbayonets9244
@imperialgermanbayonets9244 4 жыл бұрын
Hello David, i am guessing that your bayonet featers the low barrel rest and a fire shield on the back on the handle to protect the wooden grip pieces? There are a number of bayonets from specific manufacturers who often doenst have the W + year on the back of the blade. J.H. Becker is one of them. The "Crown 3" or "Crown Z" marking is also common for your manufacturer. Since you bayonet has its sawback removed it was still in service in 1918. therefore i would date it between 1916 or 1917. Produced and most likley heavily used during the great war. Cheers, Vincent.

@@DaxThebest07 To be honest i am not an expert when it comes to the S98/05. The Letter under crown is a marking used whenever the item was within the production tolerances. If this pieces passed the test, the worker in charge stamped it with the first letter of his last name under the crown. Why there is no date... I looked in my literature but coudlnt find anything helpful. Most of these detailed information were lost in the fires of the second world war when the archives burned down in berlin. If i come up with more info i will let you know.

Hi. The unit markings reads as the "Bayerisches 4. Pionier-Bataillon, 3. Kompanie, Waffe Nr. 14" or in english "bavarian 4th pioneer bataillon, 3rd company, weapon no. 14". If you find a "B" as the first letter of a unit markings, it usually indicates "bavarian". Cheers, Vincent..

My bayonet, which I just found today after years of not seeing it, is a sawback butcherblade BUT it's not dated. Could this possibly mean anything?
@imperialgermanbayonets9244
@imperialgermanbayonets9244 5 жыл бұрын
Does it have any kind of markings at all? Although i don't really have any literature to back me up i think this means that your bayonet was not accepted as state property. Maybe there was something wrong with it or it was not manufactured within tolerances. At the end of the war they produced more S98/05 then they needed (unlike the S84/98). Therefor they could afford to "sort through" their bayonets and if one example was not up to standarts they would not have accepted it and therefore not stamp it. Another possibility is that it was lost during the production and could not be stamped. Overall these undated S98/05 do pop up from time to time but are kind of rare. Cheers, Vincent.

@@imperialgermanbayonets9244 The only thing stamped into it is anker-werke Beilefeld. Considering the history of the sawback, my theory is it was produced mid-late 1917 when the German High Command learned the French and British were expecting anyone found with one of these bayonets, so they panicked and threw this one out. No clue, just a cool theory I thought up.

I’m having a bit of a mystery I bought one of these knives from a neighbor that is the 98/05 by Alexander Coppel. From what I can tell everything appears to be very correct, it’s a very quality blade however the date under the W is dated to 1914. I really don’t understand why it says 14 under the w. It has metal on the palm of the blade To prevent scorching it has a metal sheath. All of that would tell me it’s 1915 or later issue. But it clearly says 14 it does not have a sawed edge either. It’s also missing wings. I’m sure it’s genuine as it’s stamping and patina are extremely convincing. The proof marks are still showing albeit with wear but still showing I’m really confused if anyone would know anything I would love to hear it. It’s possible it’s fake but I don’t know why someone would put a monumental effort into crafting a extremely well-made blade with the wrong date and selling it to me for about €80 or 100 $.
